Hailing from London, Lisbon and Basildon, Poeticat are a truly unique proposition; fusing the thought provoking spoken word delivery of  Catherine Martindale who has been a prominent figure on the spoken word and poetry scene for sometime with the experimental vocal harmonies of fellow European Theatre Arts graduate Ziggi Jadovski. This alone creates something very original. Now add a surreal and captivating genre-bending melting pot which is given an overwhelming sense of roots and power with the phenomenally warm bass lines of Dr Goat Foot from the Institute of Contemporary Music. Taking the band in another direction is percussionist Vic Meadowcroft on the Cajon who pulls in from Portuguese traditional music and African rhythms bringing it all together in a loose yet fluid journey while the prowess of guitarist Baj Kenrick reaches in the songs, burrows under the skin and adds another twist with complex metal guitar riffs and melodies that call upon Testament to Metallica.   This is the true alternative spirit that is missing so much in the current musical climate.

Part 10 of the Post Card Club sees a welcome return from Bournemouth based Yoofs, Other than one or two tracks that have sneaked out here and there, the band have not really been active for a year or two now. Instead they have been focusing on bringing many of our favourite bands to Dorset for their excellent ‘This Scene Isn’t Dead’ nights at Sixty Million Postcards.

In the intervening time between their last output and now, Yoofs seem to have worked on developing a cleaner sound. ‘For Her’ gives the impression that the band have spent the best part of 2013 enjoying the latest Ducktails album. For all it’s janglyness, the song is tinged with the sadness that comes with growing up and growing apart. Lines such as “you never said, the words inside your head, now they’re gone" only add to the consistent growing pains the song seems to encapsulate. Yoofs have just signed to Strong Island Recordings and are working on a full release due later this year.

DEAD YOUNG FRIENDS

The brainchild of talented multi-instrumentalist/producer/engineer Jorge Strofer, DYF is rooted in classic rock structures yet heavily indebted to a variety of other influences; from The Cure to '90s shoegaze. A voracious music geek inspired to make music at a very young age--he traces the initial spark to listening to Fleetwood Mac's Rumors in 1994 at the ripe old age of 4--Strofer was born into a musical family from La Romana, Dominican Republic, where he was also raised. Already a known quantity in his hometown during his teenage years, in 2007 he started the band Sonics--its name betraying an affinity for Sonic Youth--releasing the EP Chaotic Situation and promoting it with a series of shows and festival appearances. 

Leaving the Dominican for engineering school the following year, Strofer eventually ended up in Boston, where he started DYF in 2009 alongside his old Sonics bandmate Andres Pichardo. But the reunion would be short lived as Pichardo went on to form Grand Resort, thereby making Strofer DYF's sole leader.

In February of 2012 DYF's debut album Lizards was released digitally. A satisfying platter of aural delight--Strofer is a producer and engineer, after all--Lizards pulls off the nifty trick of sounding reverent but not reactionary, its songwriting steeped in influences ranging from Dylan to Joy Division; from Springsteen to Television, all while never sounding dated or trying to ride an ephemeral trend. 

Now based in Brooklyn, Strofer's new DYF lineup will be out promoting the upcoming Everything You Want Destroys What Others Have album due out in the spring. First single "Going Away from Me" was released in early January 2013.
