Juno Review: It's been a great year for fast-rising nu-disco producer, remixer and re-editor Andy Buchan. Fresh from impressing via appearances on Spa In Disco, Masterworks Music and Hot Digits, Buchan pitches up on Midnight Riot with two of his strongest revisions to date. While "Same As It Ever Was" is close to his usual style - think rolling house style beats, swishy noises, rich deep house chords and tons of synthesizer-wielding nu-disco swagger - it's title track "The Big Do" that's really got us hot under the collar. For starters, it's propelled forwards by some seriously good slap bass, with hazy, soul-flecked vocal samples, slick Rhodes style chords, starry eectronics and no-nonsense beats only serving to enhance the glassy-eyed, loved-up mood. Like much of Buchan's output, it has all the right ingredients.

The Fingerman Show 23/9/18

This is my Spin City Show that aired live on myhouseradio.fm 23/09/2018.  This week I had the pleasure of sharing the show with London based Simon Kennedy, who absolutely nailed his set for the show. Simon's set starts around the 1:01 mark 

A bit more about Simon
Simon developed his love for soul & dance music from the very early eighties, listening and learning from some of the early London pirate stations, His love for dj’ing started later on in 1985. He learnt the craft and earned his stripes from playing at clubs & running his own sound system in South London. 
He had slots on pirate stations all over the country and played at some of the earliest raves, After the rare groove explosion he later went on to champion the US garage/soulful and disco house sound since 1987 He also had his own record shop and has run numerous club nights over the years. In 1991 he released his first record and more recently has released tracks with Tropical Disco & Midnight Riot (dubplate disco) all of which have been heavily supported by DJ’s worldwide

Following early outings on Electric Friends and Spa In Disco, fast-rising producer JMMSTR (no relation to Freerange boss Jimpster) makes a first appearance on Slightly Transformed. There are two tracks to set the pulse racing. Opener "New York" is a confirmed mid-tempo treat: a woozy, 112 BPM shuffler that layers flash-fried guitars and piano-laden snippets from a swirling, string-laden disco classic atop thickset bass and bongo-heavy nu-disco beats. Virtual B-side "You Took" employs bouncier and crispier beats, with the producer utilizing filter effects to tease in elements of a female-fronted disco-funk number. The vocal breakdown is life affirming, but it's the trippy treatment of the sample source's hard-wired guitars that catches the ear.

Named a ‘stellar edits provider’ by Mixmag and the ‘nu-disco don’ by Juno, Andy Buchan has become one of the leading names in the disco and edit scene. His music and edits have been played by BBC 6 Music, Greg Wilson, Optimo, Massive Attack’s Daddy G, Horse Meat Disco and Craig Charles, while Andy holds down residencies across Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Southport alongside regular club and festival bookings.

With over 200 releases across chart-topping releases on dozens of disco-fried labels, including Peppermint Jam, Hot Digits, Midnight Riot and Paper Disco, Andy launched his Hot Gorilla Records imprint in 2020 along with Conan The Selector. The label hit the ground running, with several Juno Download No.1s, multiple Traxsource Top 10s and four tracks in the Best of 2021 Beatport chart. That led to the Hot Gorilla funky monkeys becoming DJ support for The Brand New Heavies' sell-out UK tour. 

Andy’s own music has been picked up for reviews in DJ Mag and Mixmag, plus radio support from 6Music and Rinse FM and club and festival plays from big-name DJs, including Bicep, Claptone, Horse Meat Disco, Greg Wilson, Peggy Gou, Justin Robertson, Electric Chair and more. That support took an interesting turn when the British National Library Sound Archive asked him to enter his back catalogue into their music collection! 

His previous residences include Chow Down and Flight Club in Leeds, Inventery and Grosvenor in Manchester alongside regular guest slots at legendary Edinburgh club The Street and the Southport Disco Festival. Alongside that, Andy has played across the UK in recent years, warming up for Huey 6 Music, Craig Charles, Dr Packer, Groove Armada, Psychemagik, Hot Chip and headlining at gigs in Manchester, Birmingham, York, Dubai and Todmorden’s legendary Golden Lion pub. 

This is just the latest chapter in Andy’s career. After freelancing for Mixmag and training as a journalist, he moved to Dubai in 2004, working for Time Out Dubai before launching DJ Mag Middle East. He was a regular on the club and festival scene, first with his own long-running, award-winning nights and with long-term residencies at Pacha and Trilogy, alongside back-to-back bookings for Creamfields UAE. It was in Dubai that he cemented his open-genre, curveball DJ style by playing alongside a wide variety of DJs like Fatboy Slim, Mark Ronson, Basement Jaxx, Todd Terje, Norman Jay, Liam Gallagher, Feel My Bicep, Graeme Park and more.

Now back in the UK, he’s become a mainstay of the disco scene while his label Hot Gorilla Records continues to grow into one of the most exciting labels in the scene, including festival slots at Beatherder and Standon Calling.
