Back on the Good Custard Mixtapes this week is none other than Monsieur Van Pratt - the driving force behind Super Spicy Records and a name synonymous with feel-good grooves.

Hailing from Mexico, Van Pratt is a self-taught musician, producer and DJ whose sound pulls straight from the golden eras of disco, funk and jazz, reshaping them into something modern, warm and irresistibly danceable. Since being named one of Traxsource’s Top 100 Nu-Disco Artists back in 2019, he’s cemented himself as one of the most exciting figures in the global nu-disco movement.

On stage, his sets have lit up dancefloors across Mexico, where he’s shared bills with a wide array of heavy hitters — from James Richardson (MGMT) and Thris Tian (Boiler Room), to Hotmood, The Funk District, and Mike Simonetti. Whether behind the decks or in the studio, Monsieur Van Pratt brings pure groove energy every single time.

Hot off the back off our latest Juno Download Disco No.1 (and Traxsource Top 50), we're back with another release from Jonathan Ulysses & Jet Boot Jack. 

You just know that soulful disco house is the order of the day when these two combine, and Curious is just that - slinky disco with a pulsing bassline, call-and-response vocals and some wonderfully clever perc and FX to keep you hooked. 

Andy Buchan turns in a characteristic brass-heavy rerub while Pete Ellison delivers his first ever remix, dialing up the funk to 11 with a driving, high-energy remix (big ups Pete!)

This track opens the Outlier album. It’s built from tension, that kind of magnetic pull on the dancefloor where everything’s unspoken, but understood. A little sweat, a little danger, that flicker of eye contact that changes everything. No introductions. No questions. Just energy.

I wanted something French house inspired, but not obvious. Clean mix, sexy groove, no vinyl static. I created a conversation with the vocal and sax responding to each other, almost like foreplay and that’s where the track finally lets go.

Named a ‘stellar edits provider’ by Mixmag and the ‘nu-disco don’ by Juno, Andy Buchan has become one of the leading names in the disco and edit scene. His music and edits have been played by BBC 6 Music, Greg Wilson, Optimo, Massive Attack’s Daddy G, Horse Meat Disco and Craig Charles, while Andy holds down residencies across Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Southport alongside regular club and festival bookings.

With over 200 releases across chart-topping releases on dozens of disco-fried labels, including Peppermint Jam, Hot Digits, Midnight Riot and Paper Disco, Andy launched his Hot Gorilla Records imprint in 2020 along with Conan The Selector. The label hit the ground running, with several Juno Download No.1s, multiple Traxsource Top 10s and four tracks in the Best of 2021 Beatport chart. That led to the Hot Gorilla funky monkeys becoming DJ support for The Brand New Heavies' sell-out UK tour. 

Andy’s own music has been picked up for reviews in DJ Mag and Mixmag, plus radio support from 6Music and Rinse FM and club and festival plays from big-name DJs, including Bicep, Claptone, Horse Meat Disco, Greg Wilson, Peggy Gou, Justin Robertson, Electric Chair and more. That support took an interesting turn when the British National Library Sound Archive asked him to enter his back catalogue into their music collection! 

His previous residences include Chow Down and Flight Club in Leeds, Inventery and Grosvenor in Manchester alongside regular guest slots at legendary Edinburgh club The Street and the Southport Disco Festival. Alongside that, Andy has played across the UK in recent years, warming up for Huey 6 Music, Craig Charles, Dr Packer, Groove Armada, Psychemagik, Hot Chip and headlining at gigs in Manchester, Birmingham, York, Dubai and Todmorden’s legendary Golden Lion pub. 

This is just the latest chapter in Andy’s career. After freelancing for Mixmag and training as a journalist, he moved to Dubai in 2004, working for Time Out Dubai before launching DJ Mag Middle East. He was a regular on the club and festival scene, first with his own long-running, award-winning nights and with long-term residencies at Pacha and Trilogy, alongside back-to-back bookings for Creamfields UAE. It was in Dubai that he cemented his open-genre, curveball DJ style by playing alongside a wide variety of DJs like Fatboy Slim, Mark Ronson, Basement Jaxx, Todd Terje, Norman Jay, Liam Gallagher, Feel My Bicep, Graeme Park and more.

Now back in the UK, he’s become a mainstay of the disco scene while his label Hot Gorilla Records continues to grow into one of the most exciting labels in the scene, including festival slots at Beatherder and Standon Calling.
