A tune from the first CD recorded by the collective band Alan Jones, François Theberge, Paul Imm and I had in the 1990's called The Fensters. What a fun band, and a great learning experience playing all over Europe together.

Low Thresholds

The opening tune of our concert on November 14, 2014 at the wonderful jazz club in Basel "Bird's Eye" 10 years after we first played as a band together. Alan and Paul and I have been playing together since the early 1990's and we were graced to add Tino in 2005.

Yukon Flats

"Through the Trees Ahead" is a 3 movement work for 9 saxophones and drumset that was commissioned by the 2014 Vienna Saxfest and performed and recorded by ORF in the MUTH concert hall in Vienna, Austria on March 1, 2014. The movements are: 1. "Through the Trees Ahead", 2. "Shadow Side" and 3. "Release". The ensemble features bass saxophone (Alvaro Collao León), baritone saxophone (Primo Salvati), 3 tenor saxophones (Tobias Hoffman, David Schäl and Massimiliano Girardi), 2 alto saxophones (Stefan Gottfried and Michal Knot), 1 soprano saxophone (Livia Ferrara) and Andy Middleton conducting, playing soprano and tenor saxophones.

Through The Trees Ahead

ANDY MIDDLETON is one of the very top-tier saxophonists living in Europe today. Imaginative and adventurous virtuosity spans an incredibly wide breadth of expression -- from fierce power to tender warmth, lyrical yet rhythmically driving, masterful and inspired. His compositions, harmonically modern and melodic yet clearly rooted in the jazz tradition, provide the perfect setting. This unique voice as a player, arranger and composer has led jazz icons such as Ralph Towner, Kenny Wheeler and David Holland to collaborate with him.  He has also performed and recorded with a long list of artists including Billy Hart, Maria Schneider, Richie Beirach, Renee Rosnes, Randy Brecker, Bill Evans, Lionel Hampton, Bob Mintzer, Joey Calderazzo, John Abercrombie, Scott Colley and Adam Nussbaum.

Born in Harrisburg, PA, Andy received his masters degree in composition at the University of Miami.  After nearly 20 years in the New York jazz scene, he relocated to Vienna, Austria in 2006, where he is Professor of Jazz Composition, Jazz Theory and Jazz Saxophone at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna.
