Advent Calendar Day Two : Arms Of Another

I wrote this song on a train from Paris to Nice in blazing sunshine. It's one of my favourite that I've written I think. And I LOVE the vocals here by Sophie Galpin, now drummer in Pins, and Milly Blue, who toured with me doing backing vocals on the Scissor Sisters tour. They are both incredible musicians and brilliant people, and made this song very special for me.

One of the first songs I wrote for 'Life Is Easy'. In my mind, it was more filmic and widescreen that some of the songs on my debut record, so I worked really hard on the production on the album. I love singing it stripped down though, and i love playing it at shows where it's just me and piano. And actually playing it solo piano opening for Elton John in Scandinavia felt pretty filmic - or at the very least pretty surreal!

Initially I called this Wanderlust, and a few weeks later Sophie Ellis-Bextor released her album with that title, so I renamed it. I wrote it not long before ‘I Wish We Were Leaving’ about the same person, so together they give an uphill, and downhill experience of a relationship.

Advent Calendar Day Five : 'Blood Moon'

Written the day after the Blood Moon this year, after a series of very strange and abrupt things that happened around the event that made the month a time for reflection. I sat down and wrote the song start to finish, and released it as a special one-off song for my tour opening for John Grant, as it's too melancholy for my next record, but I am still very proud of it.

I was so in love with this song, and @billie-ray-martin 's whole 'Deadline For My Memories' album through the 90s. I did a special solo piano show for Gaydar Radio a few years back, and decided to cover this song as I loved singing it so much. I really love the lyrics in this song. Here's my sad, sad piano version of the thumping dance track that has stood the test of time with flying colours.

Written while I was still in University (!) and stuck in demo form until I re-recorded it for the 'I Wish We Were Leaving' EP. When I met @beth_hirsch - one of my FAVOURITE artists - a long time ago I gave her some early recordings, this being one. She mentioned to me when I was making the EP that she still loved this song, so I thank her for reminding me about a song I'd nearly written off to the vaults of time. In some ways a "new song" as it has never been released as Bright Light Bright Light, but a song I wrote when I was 18, and used to play every other day busking on the London Underground to pay my rent before releasing my first single. I've never finished a recording of this with full production that I've been happy with, so here's an acoustic demo of it. Hope you like it!
