Kung Ano Ang Puno

May 4th 2024:

In celebration of a dance of the Maranao people of the southern Philippines, we performed our modified version for an enthusiastic crowd at Casa d'Italia in Montréal.

The traditional dance includes a princess facing trials – trapped in a collapsing rainforest – until being rescued by her prince.

Our version reflects the experience of many of the Filipino migrant women that come to Migrante Quebec. They left families back home where there are no jobs, and they flew across the ocean to work tough jobs here in Canada to send money home. Many face trials like exploitative and abusive employers, or brutal immigration policies. 

And in the end, no prince comes to save them. They rely on their own strength and willpower. Their organization and joint struggle brings them closer to freedom. Only the movement of migrants themselves can bring liberation!

This is the song Rosas ng Digma (Roses of War) by Musikang Bayan from the Philippines. I was inspired to make a bleep bloop version while stuck inside during the 2020 COVID self-isolation.

This song is a revolutionary love song. By that, I mean that there is a longstanding revolution for national liberation and democracy in the Philippines, including a civil war that has been waging for over fifty years. 

As those involved would tell you, the conditions of revolutionary war – revolutionary in that it seeks to create a new society, unhindered by foreign imperialism and its local sellouts – brings people together in unexpected ways. The culture produced by these conditions seeks to propagate a "national, scientific, and mass-oriented" worldview.

This song is written from the perspective of a fighter who has gone away to participate in the revolutionary war, as a letter to their loved one. 

There's a second part of the original song, a letter written in response. The last line is sung by both characters, together:

"Para sa isang lipunang malaya, at isang pag-ibig tunay at dakila"
"For a free society, and a true and magnificent love."
