a test of a work-in-progress software instrument called streameddies, where snippets of an incoming signal are processed by an audio classifier and then regurgitated semi-randomly according to which descriptors (e.g. "musical instrument" or "narrator, monologue") have come up most often. here, the process listened to the "lofi hip hop radio - beats to study/relax to" livestream and part of a TED talk. I steered the streameddies output by filtering out the speech-related descriptors at the start of playback, allowing these in, then filtering out all descriptors besides "heart murmur" and "heart sounds, heartbeat" toward the end.

randomized drum track--snare, kick, tom, and hat hits are governed by a set of probabilities that varies depending on where you are in the measure. For this track I messed with the tempo and also the parameters of the (uniform) random distribution governing the speed of the drum samples (e.g. their pitch).

disquiet0429 solitary ensembles

A march in 13/16 time as the basis for further collaboration.

This is was performed live on the Pulsar-23, then brought into Ableton Live for a little EQ and bass boost. I also sped it up slightly so that it would be at an integral BPM, easier for others to work with.

Metric structure is 3-3-3-2-2. ♩= 98 BPM.  I tried to create a basic structure for the work. There are four rough sections, and a coda. Otherwise, the rhythmic is rather static to give space for dynamic parts on top. The high end might need taming with a bit with EQ depending on what gets added. If you need, feel free.

for the disquiet0429 Solitary Elements project. I had the drum kit still miked up in my studio so the simplest thing was to sit down and play.

130 bpm (more or less) 7/4 

didn't read the bit about panning to the left sorry, gives people a bit more room for tweaking the sound.

I kept it pretty simple figuring the next two participants were going to add something to make it more interesting.  Pulled out my wooden tongue drum which I love the sound of but I don't always like the C Major scale it's in. I improvised a rhythm/melody with no click track.  There was only a bit of editing afterward to cut down the length. Added some delay to make it more interesting. This also kind of made the melody(s) more like chords because they ring out more. I was trying to make the rhythm sort of there but not there, garbled a bit by the delay.

I wanted to do something simple, old-fashioned, straightforward but specific and an-free and saw this is my chance to (finally!) become a member of a berlin school group! Hopefully another disquiet member will follow this invitation ...

It's straight: 
- 120 bpm 
- 4/4 
- the chord progression is: C F C' G# D 
- every chord is repeated 4 times
- so one chord progression takes 20 bars (4x4 bars) 
- the chord progression is repeated for five times (=100 bars)
- every 4 chords have an extra base note, more or less a wake-up call for mellotron improvizers …

Everything else is filter sweeps and realtime modulation of the waveform.

Virtual Berlin School Trio [disquiet0429]

Disquiet Junto Project 0431: Solitary Ensembles x 3
The Assignment: Complete a trio by adding a track to an existing duet by two other musicians.

Step 1: This week’s Disquiet Junto project is the third in a sequence that encourages and rewards asynchronous collaboration. This week you will be adding music to a pre-existing track, which you will source from the previous week’s Junto project (disquiet.com/0430). Note that you are finishing a trio — you’re creating the third part of what two previous musicians created. Keep this in mind.

Step 2: The plan is for you to record an original piece of music, on any instrumentation of your choice, as a complement to a pre-existing track. First, however, you must select the piece of music to which you will be adding your own music. There are well over 100 tracks in all to choose from, 103 as part of this playlist:

Step 3: Record a piece of music, roughly the length of the piece of music you selected in Step 2. Your track should complement the piece from Step 2, and it should be placed dead center between the left and right stereo channels. When composing and recording your part, do not alter the original piece of music at all. To be clear: the track you upload won’t be your piece of music alone; it will be a combination of the track from Step 2 and yours.

My contribution is the organ in the middle.

Treesome - disquiet0431 feat.  Akstuhl And NorthWoods

“Memorial” is a recording of 113 sirens recorded over nine nights from an alley-side stairway in Chicago, from May 24 to June 2, the days that span the de facto end of lockdown in our city and the beginning of the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor protests. I've layered the sounds over one another, no matter their duration, loudness or distance, in the order in which they were recorded, leaving nothing out. Besides cutting and layering, there is no other processing. Each siren begins a second or two after the one before, as when you sing a song as a round.

I taped every night, from evening until dawn (around 75 hours of tape) using a drop rig Sony A10 with mikroUši and windbubbles. This is a technique I had read about from recordist George Vlad. I intended to capture the way that, with street traffic and airplanes silent during the COVID lockdown, sirens dominate the soundscape of the city at night. There are several nursing homes and a COVID hospital nearby, and when we couldn't sleep we heard the ambulances pass, one after one, for months. I had wanted to set these ambulance sirens against long silences, to show how, denuded of all the ancillary everyday sounds, the skeleton of a sirenscape subtends Chicago's broad and rich urban soundscape.

But the project changed after the police murder of George Floyd on May 25. Over time, there were fewer ambulance sirens and more police sirens. The migratory morning birds captured in early recordings gave way to TV news helicopters and the sound of nearby demonstrations. The sirens, which had first transformed from urban noise to a memento mori, transformed once more, again becoming a sign of longstanding and ongoing police terror toward Black Americans. As I compiled these recordings, I kept thinking about how Floyd was alive when I began the project. Reflecting, I chose to adopt the layering structure in the recording in lieu of long silences, to emphasize a kind of horrible relentlessness.

Memorial aired as part of the Radiophrenia Festival in Scotland in November, 2020. It was also featured at the Audire festival exhibit in Portugal in April 2021. It won an Honorable Mention at the Sound of the Year Awards in the U.K. in the new Composed With Sound category.
