For his latest project, drummer Julian Sartorius hiked for ten days through Switzerland. In his luggage: two drumsticks and a curiosity about the sounds they might produce along the way. Out of the beats collected en route he made the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève», an experimental sound collage that maps Switzerland far from the usual stereotypes. In the distribution of the record Sartorius is also charting new territory: It will not only be sold as a vinyl record but also as a hiking map with a download code.

For his last major solo project – «Beat Diary» (2012 / Everest Records) – Julian Sartorius left the studio; each day for one year he played a track in his immediate surroundings. For the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève» Sartorius progresses a thousand steps further: In October 2016 he donned his backpack and hiked for ten days from Basel to Geneva via the Jura Ridgeway Trail (270 kilometres). For sound sources he used what he found en route: tree trunks, hiker turnstiles, empty silos, dry corn stalks – each object evoking its own voice. As an explorer of the quotidian, Sartorius evoked with his drumsticks a universe of sound that’s hidden to the regular hiker. With a backpack full of recorded rhythmic patterns and sound sources Julian Sartorius returned to the studio to create the album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève». Sartorius edited the different audio files, layering and combining them together. The result is an experimental sound collage in which every track represents one day of hiking and where the familiar meets the previously unheard.

The album «Hidden Tracks: Basel – Genève» will be released in June 2017 by Bernese label Everest Records. It will be available in two formats – as a hiking map with a download code and as a regular 12” vinyl. The map, designed by Silvio Brügger, charts and retraces the paths that Sartorius walked, inviting people to follow in the footsteps of the artist. In addition, one track of the album will be released as an artwork postcard that can be played as a vinyl on a record deck. The album release tour will see Sartorius guide an audience along a short hike circuit during which Sartorius will improvise with objects he finds along the way. The audience participants will follow while listening using headphones that receive audio from a microphone Sartorius trains on the objects. These hikes will start and end at selected music venues.

The album, entitled “Eng, Düster und Bang”, is based on a text by the German writer Jean Paul. The first flower piece from the novel “Flower, fruit and thorn pieces; or, the married life, death, and wedding of the advocate of the poor, Firmian Stanislaus Siebenkäs” is captioned “Rede des toten Christus vom Weltgebäude herab, dass kein Gott sei”, or “Speech by the dead Christ from the Universe, confessing that there is no God”. Blixa Bargeld carried Jean Paul’s text around with him for a long time before eventually suggesting it to KiKu as the basis for another collaboration. The text is a masterpiece of the German language and a key document of modern atheism, as well as being the autobiographical testimony of the author, who was brought up in a vicarage. One summer evening, the narrator falls asleep outside and dreams that he is awakened in a cemetery, at one hour before midnight, by the chimes from a clock tower and watches as all the graves open up. The day of the Last Judgment appears to be dawning because at the same time everything is shaken by an earthquake, just as depicted in apocalyptic fantasies for thousands of years. The narrator enters the swaying church, where all the dead gather as shades around the altar. We become witnesses to a type of cosmic Mass, when suddenly Christ descends on to the altar from above. All the dead spontaneously call out, filled with fear, as if they sense it: “Christ, is there no God?” And he, the Revelator, who proclaims the truth, says only: “There is no God.” Christ as a pitiful creature, drenched in tears. The world is engulfed and the corpses, which were only ever shadows, disintegrate. The Last Judgment and eternal life with God in Heaven do not await Mankind, only a tumultuous chaos in an eternal night filled with pain. 
In this project, the text is split into a sequence of pieces and songs that can be listened to as a whole, as a suite. Rich and inspiring grooves and ecclesiastical-sounding melodies merge into a suggestive maelstrom. Just like Jean Paul’s words from Blixa Bargeld’s mouth, the composition seems to be a cosmic and religious, indeed an ideological vision that is not just current, but timeless. At some points, just as on the first album “Marcher sur la tête”, the New York rapper Black Cracker takes on the narrator’s role and casts a spell on the listener with his striking and personal poetry, expanding the acoustic field that composer Yannick Barman has created: melancholy, driving elemental forces and instincts, but also intermittent musically enlightening glimmers of hope and gentle choral, even playful, clouds above a world in fearful turmoil.

cyclo. is a project by Carsten Nicolai and Ryoji Ikeda since 1999.

cyclo. examines error structures and repetitive loops in software and computer programmed music, with audiovisual modules for realtime sound visualization forming one of the key strategies in this examination.

The project orientates itself around the discipline of Phase Correlation. Within this process, the phase relationship between two inputted audio signals are metered. This metering device was developed for the monitoring and assistance of vinyl mastering, where precise parallel correlations of phases was essential for subsequent record pressing quality.

It is this activity and pattern of movement that draws the curiosity of Nicolai and Ikeda. Working together, they have selected numerous ‘bits’ of sound and committed them to an extensive archive, thus creating a library from which they may draw pre-constructed audio elements at choice. The audio elements have been constructed and chosen through agendas concerned with minutiae editing of frequencies (often out of our physical range of hearing), and the perpetual amassing of audio elements to an undefined point. For Nicolai and Ikeda an ‘infinity index’ of sound fragments is a conscious motivation, that forms the basis of their research and also feeds cyclo. with the audio material required for visuality.

Releases of cyclo. are the albums ‘cyclo. .’ and ‘cyclo. id’, followed by the EP ‘id’ (12“).

Both cyclo. releases are available digitally from November 20, 2017.

»winter, or a time which represents that season, in a metropole that appears to be moscow. the visitor is taking metro no. 6 at leninsky prospect as he is on his way to the ballroom close to gorky park. the air is icy, the sky is grey. a cat, previously hidden among the dirty snow, is crossing his way. the closer he gets to his destination, the clearer he can hear music, music that reminds him of future days.

the dimly lit room is only sparsely filled. on stage a graceful singer, capturing the room with her presence. captive voices merge with chords played on yet unknown instruments – machine rhythms cycle in 3/4 time. the vigorous peasant dancers, following an instinctive knowledge of the weight of fall, utilize their surplus energy to press all their strength into the proper beat of the measure, thus intensifying their personal enjoyment in dancing. here, in the transhuman ballroom, time stands still and values are being dissolved by numeric progressions. spiritually allied, the visitor, the singer and the peasant dancers short-circuit the present moment while the last falling snow slowly turns into rain.«

with »walzerzyklus«, atom™ returns to raster to complete his series that has once begun with »liedgut« and continued with »winterreise«. the 7 tracks, created in collaboration with russian singer lisokot, are subdivided into 3 pieces of 2 minutes each and 4 pieces of 3 minutes each, intentionally reflecting the 3/4 time of a classic waltz.

throughout the release, lisokot’s delicate vocals are put into different relations to atom™’s rather cool machine music, either complementing or contrasting each other. in the same line, the 3 shorter “leitmotifs” provide the main theme that is taken up repeatedly in the course of the release.

»walzerzyklus« will be released on CD and as special, laser-engraved vinyl edition limited to 300 copies.

OUT TOO takes a look at a wildly romantic landscape of rocky edifices, forests and streams in the region of Krauchthal, through the lens of a semi-automatic eye. Origami-like images unfold to fill the space embedded in a sculptured sound-world, revealing a special piece of nature.

Sounds recorded on-site weave with the warm tones of actual and synthesised trumpets and celli.

OUT TOO takes the common contemporary idea of ‘experience before experience’ to a new level in a virtual-design reality and transforms a real piece of the world into a hyper-real event.*

I was always obsessed with listening to music and playing electric bass, but knew that I didn't necessarily want to be a session man. I realized that beeing a producer, capturing that magic, it would have been my life as well. I started Cubase in 2002, then Digital Performer in 2005 as assistant engineer at Lead Studio in Rome. As soon as possible I discovered analog synthesizers buying Korg Ms20. I knew fellow audio friends who focused more on sound-design and bit by bit my focus changed. As I started getting more involved in awesome projects, using Ableton Live as sequencer, I realized how much I loved my new path, as programmer and sound-performer too. I've learned many skills through my work from practical live shows and A/V performances with my band called Molotoy. Since 2016 I'm Avid Pro-Tools User Certified. During 2017 I started mixing and sound-designing Cinema and Tv Movies/Trailers for Netflix, Disney+, 20th Century Fox, Europictures, DeAKids, Rai1, Rai2, Tv8, NOVE and others. I like soundscapes. I'm in love with contemporary arts and modular music.
