After writing my new book (coming soon!) and completing the section on raves which I wrote by listening to master DJs the entire time, I decided to start Djing again for the first time in almost 20 years. This is my first mix. It goes kinda cross genre with some Tech House, some house,  some Acid, some Techno and a little breaks. My wife is for sure not happy about the results of this experiment into revisiting my youth(she asked if I was doing "at" her) but hopefully you will be. Cherushii Live At Rare Form 10.31.2014

This track is from a live performance featuring Broun Fellinis and Bernie Worrell (Parliament/Funkadelic & Talking Heads)at Yoshi's San Francisco. Due to a conflict with a local promoter and another show involving Worrell, Yoshi's was forced to cancel the performance which also featured MC Radioactive. Yoshi's decided to present a FREE event minus the legendary keyboard player and the show was on. When Bernie Worrell arrived in town and upon hearing of the cancelation(which he had not been made aware of, Worrell jumped into a cab and headed to Yoshi's, headed back stage and up to the curtain where he peeked his head through and asked the drummer(Kevin Carnes) "can i play wit' y'all?" Fortunately David Boyce (Sax, Keys, and vocals) had his Korg Micro on the stage and this is what happened.

The Unaimed Arrow - by Have Special Power

Two weeks ago I (we) lost an extraordinary friend, Dave 'New York' Tobman. I lived in LA from 2004 - 2006, and frequented a local coffee shop. I didn't know many people there, so I mostly kept to myself. As a DJ for Mixwell, Sound In Color, Soul.Scienz, and The Procussions, I was neck deep in the DJ game. I would take my laptop to the coffee shop and work on mixes, set lists, and promo. I would always see Dave there, but I didn't know who he was. Apparently, he was always paying attention. One day, he came up and introduced himself. It wasn't long before we were talking shop and he was telling me stories about being best friends with MC Serch, local driver for Black Thought, and renting out the actual car that Biggie was shot in. Dave loved hip-hop, and that love permeated every aspect of his life. As time went on, he welcomed me into his house, and took me in as one of his own. At a certain point, when I was down and out, he took care of me, making sure I had everything I needed to survive: cash, cars, food, herbs, family, and most of all, hope. He eventually asked me to give his son DJ lessons, and would drop him off at my house every week. He introduced me to Dilla and his mother right before Dilla passed on. After I moved to SF in 2006, Dave went on to become an important part of everything I held dear in LA, including the Boombox and Beat Junkies families. He was a true friend in the purest form, a fellow hip-hop aficionado, and he literally changed my life.

In 2005, Dave asked me to put together a mixtape for his friends/clients who were some of the biggest names in the culture. He procured a bunch of drops and exclusive tracks from Black Thought, J Dilla, Common, Kweli, and many more. Seriously, there is a Black Thought freestyle in this mix that you've probably never heard. Dave would bring me exclusive vinyl/digital recordings, and track suggestions; I had some creative control, but essentially, he commissioned and curated the entire mixtape. As far as I know, this mix was only distributed to his close friends and clients. I was honored, to say the least. I honestly cannot listen to it without tears in my eyes, remembering what an incredible friend and human that Dave was. 

In Dave's honor, I've decided to release the mix to the public for the first time. Please keep in mind this was 2005, and times were very different. This is merely a time capsule, a snapshot of the brilliant soul that many of us had the privilege to know and love. Feel free to stream, download, and share to anyone and everyone.
