Tranquility 11  in a series of 11

This series of work which I have the privilege to work on are heavily influenced by the calm and the flow of positive energy that is felt at spas. As with most paintings I created, i rode on these emotions and started the creative process by first composing a different set of music using various musical instruments and sound effects for each piece of work before i started replaying the music continuously in the studio as I worked on the canvas.

Totally led by inspirations generated from the music, I then translated the emotions onto the canvasses via energetic brush strokes, bold splashes of paints, interspersed with sudden burst of colours, all working together in a rhythmic flow which sometimes seem to carry on indefinitely beyond the confines of the canvasses. Oftentimes, meditation on the music will inspire a sudden burst of creative energy and this is evident is some pieces where you see focused areas of 'activities' on the canvasses.

Custom painting/sound contribution based on Asian proverbs for the Wisdom Beyond Borders, Singapore Grand Finale 2012. One of the nine pieces of artwork which was auctioned off to aid the Thailand Flood Relief.

Malay Proverb:

Translation in English: 
An impression can be made on stone if water constantly drips on it.

Meaning: 
With hard work and determination, mountains and other obstacles can be conquered. 

For this art piece, I ‘sketch’ out my interpretation of the proverb in music which inspires me and I then ‘transfer’ this influences onto the canvas.

The live soundtracks, Black Oasis 1 and 2, created are a part of artist Yeo Shih Yun's Mind Ink Painting Machine project. She establishes abstract ink paintings using electroencephalography (EEG) sensors that track brain activity. To make the paintings, she dons a commercially manufactured brain-sensing headset that uses EEG sensors to monitor and record electrical activity in her brain. The software analyzes her brainwaves, and the data is filtered through a graphics library to create real-time digital ink paintings.

When Andy Chia approached me with Vighatana early last year, he already had in mind to produce a dramatic work inspired by climate change as we were right at the start of the pandemic. I clicked with the idea. While he shared the vision with me, The Garden Of Earthly Delights by Hieronymous Bosch and the Tibetan Thangka paintings kept coming to my mind. I wanted something visually stimulating yet straightforward to understand.  Before humankind learned to read, we depended solely on word of mouth or visual symbols to express meanings and learn something—art forms created to communicate important messages and inspire people to act and think.

Together with the creative input on After Effects by Keith Chia. Scenarios of forest fires spreading with intense heat, extreme temperatures, crashing waves of tsunamis. The work presents a tapestry work of art that begins and continues to evolve for a limited time—depicting or simulating the pandemic's uncomfortable feeling that we are all still trying to overcome.

So art is used to communicate different messages within different contexts. Art forms continue to speak to people, but it does so in a varied way to a potentially broader mix of diverse audiences. For example, forest fires spreading, the build-up of tornados, and chaos. Elements represented by fictional characters. The work hopes to bring attention to climate change and its potential effects through a series of embodied moving artworks.

Stripping the music of its cross-cultural points of reference and visual, fully integrated with the music as one living being. It was also a pleasure to contribute to creating the soundtrack for this presentation with SAtheCollective.

Vighatana is an ongoing project that we all hope to present at a selected venue for audiences to experience the work in the future.
