Following in the footsteps of his vinyl-only debut EP, “Floaty Things”, electronics transcender and modular warlock Colin Benders clocks in on Hiss & Hertz with “Rigmarole”, a five-track odyssey ushering us amidst mazes of intricately woven improvisations, hectic rhythmic landslides and mood-enslaved machine talk. 

Recorded during lockdown, like its predecessor, the album pledges to showcase the darker side of Benders’ live streams turned archival recordings, whilst shedding a broader light on his breadth of scope as a spur-of-the-moment conductor of highly demanding, circuit-bending symphonies of sorts. 

A shape-shifting flow of unpredictable essence, flush with climactic flights, untamed divagations and further mind-expanding excursions into chaotic sound expanses, “Rigmarole” is the fruit of a philosophy and particular relationship with his steadily growing online audience, with whom he’s come to go full circle; from sharing his knowledge and approach towards modular expression in open-ended, non-formulaic fashion, onto stamping the result of his jamming sessions on black wax thanks to the continued support of his community. Comprised of five live-recorded joints spanning the widest array of styles, tempi and moods, “Rigmarole” is a magnetic field where Benders’ sound blooms in all its alchemical potency and spontaneous finesse.
 
Via extended windows into his ever-resourceful headspace, Benders threads his way across brooding ambient scapes, sci-fi-indebted spaciousness and metronomic minimalism (“This Is Fine”), hi-octane, tribal-laced industrialism on a droney tip (“Wait”), stadium-sized arpeggiated techno (“What’s That Noise”), gritty basement thunder down your spine (“I Can’t Feel My Legs”) and wide-screen, cosmic-friendly exploratory wares (“Carry Me”) - somehow shaping a cohesive ensemble of music out of his all-embracing investigations in the realm of modular potentialities and live-told inspiration. Keeping you on the edge throughout, “Rigmarole” will be written down as a defining moment for Benders, an unpigeonholeable artist in constant search for the next thrill.

One foot in the nineties and another in the future, New Yorker Holden Federico's music updates the funk and grit of techno’s formative era for modern dance floors. The four tracks on “Inner Order”, his second EP for the SK11X series, squeeze maximum power out of few elements, with peak-time cuts presented on the A-side and his deeper work on the flip. Heavily road tested in label boss Setaoc Mass’ DJ sets, this EP is proven to do the business on a big stage, while still paying tribute to techno’s musical roots.

The first of a two-part package of exclusive material from the 17th edition in the Watergate CD series is from none other than the duo who commanded the mix, Pan-Pot. Making it even more special is the fact that both tracks are collaborations with two heavy hitting names in the industry from completely different sides of the musical spectrum: Slam and Vincenzo.

On the A side we see Pan-Pot and Slam do a techno burner with 'Conductor'. This shouldn't come as any surprise as both are well known for their heavy peak time club anthems. With driving hi hats, crisp snares and a thumping kick drum, the solid foundation is laid for the craftsmen to build the rest of their masterpiece and it begins with dark, reverb heavy stabs. Slowly a monotonous yet psychedelic tone takes grip and the stabs come again. This time more frequent and building in energy before getting to the break where the white noise grows and the tension builds. With just a few perfect elements it only takes removing a few pieces and then giving them back at the perfect time to instill a massive 'hands in the air' moment.

The flip side offers another vibe which rounds out the EP perfectly. It was in 2007 on the Pan-ORama album that we last saw Vincenzo and Pan-Pot together for 'Faces'. With 'Fiction Inc' we see both artists’ styles shine through. A warm deep sub bass grabs your attention while washes of glittery synths pan the background setting the stage for the lush key work that Vincenzo is synonymous for and the sinister bleeps that scream Pan-Pot. Finally the feature element reveals itself; a mix between dark and uplifting chords that resolve each cycle of the other elements finalizing in a cohesive, driving, emotional ride.

It was early 2007 when Inigo Kennedy inaugurated Token. Since that Identify Yourself 12” the Belgian label has gone from strength to strength, integrating both Kennedy and Ashley Burchett, aka Ø [Phase], into becoming integral cogs in the Token machine. In between releases by Grovskopa, Oscar Mulero and Go Hiyama, both Ø [Phase] and Inigo Kennedy dominated Token’s output, but it wasn’t until Burchett’s watershed Binary Opposition that Token received the shower of praise it deserved. Following this, label founder Kr!z issued three remix 12”s of that release which, including Token regulars, took in a profound cast of producers to reprocess “Binary Opposition” by the way of Sigha, Peter Van Hoesen, Planetary Assault Systems and Ben Klock. It was here Token stamped their authority on contemporary techno.

Since then Token has grown exponentially, bringing into their fold artists like Xhin, Mark Broom and Rødhåd, while Ctrls, formally one half of Northern Structures, has seen his solo career flourish on Token with the release of five records to date, and he joins Inigo Kennedy and Ø [Phase] as a label stalwart. Additionally this year, Orphx and Ancient Methods debuted their relentless Eschaton collaboration on Token, and Christian Wünsch’s Spherical Coordinates dalliance with Oscar Mulero has gained even more momentum with a second release called Kinematics Equations. Now, seven years after that debut Kennedy record, Token present Aphelion, a nine-track CD and triple vinyl grandstand of new and exclusive material from label regulars and like-minded artists whom Token founder Kr!z specifically commissioned for this milestone release.

The penultimate record before Aphelion was a second Token 12” by Rødhåd, another artist adding to the cultivation of the label’s sound and roster, and for this compilation the Berliner supplies his cosmically inspired “Haumea”. Joining the Dystopian founder on Aphelion are three of the UK’s most influential techno artists: Surgeon, James Ruskin and Luke Slater under his Planetary Assault Systems alias who provide Token with solo material for the first time after previously appearing on the imprint in remix form. Entirely new names to grace the label via Aphelion include Stroboscopic Artefacts founder Lucy, and Blawan and Pariah's Karenn project, while label faithfuls Inigo Kennedy,  Ø [Phase] and Ctrls naturally commit three Token defining productions.

Casting one’s eye over Token’s back catalogue and it’s clear to see the label is a staunch advocate of absolute techno, remaining steadfast in issuing quality material that remains true to classic strands of the genre regardless of its popularity flux. In that respect, Aphelion - a word used to describe the point in orbit when a planet or comet is farthest from the sun - provides a simple analogy that the magnetic force of Token, unfazed by the shadows cast by popular opinion, will proudly shine light on their artists and given styles. 

“We started in an era where our genre was very unpopular,” Kr!z explains. “And in the end that seemed a big advantage for us, because when everyone was giving up, we started our mission.” Regularly hosting label nights in prominent clubs around the world, Token has become a label supported by a wide-ranging body of artists like Âme and Ben Klock to Efdemin, Truss and Ancient Methods. With the label now branching out into album and compilation territory, Token’s duty to techno may not yet be accomplished, but it’s been a job well done.

Truncate teams up with Chicago icon DJ Hyperactive for the ‘Trust The Process’ EP, landing on the former’s eponymous imprint this March. Crafted over the past two years in Truncate’s LA studio, the release marks the pair’s first-ever collaboration in twenty years of friendship and sees them delve deep into their decade-long wealth of knowledge of versatile House and Techno.

DJ Hyperactive and Truncate’s ‘Trust The Process’ starts with ‘Universal Function’, a no-holds-barred dance track with mind-addling loops, each sequence carefully overlapping to melt the ‘floor. The title track then strips things back a little, in which they underpin wiggy acid sounds with an effective groove before ‘Space Shuffle’ shoots for the stars with trickling synthlines and rolling rhythm. ‘Matter Of Time’ then closes out this all-purpose offering with dark, bleepy melodies laid over locked organic drums for another tasty set of cuts on the Truncate label.

Truncate, synonymous with the LA Techno scene as one of its most stalwart champions for over a decade, is known for his quality, groove-driven Techno and handy DJ tools on labels like Hardgroove, his Truncate imprint, and jackin’ WRKTRX sublabel. Here, he taps up Chicagoan 90s Techno and House legend and 4 Track Recordings label boss DJ Hyperactive for the ‘Trust The Process’ EP, whose own production credits span labels like CLR, Nachtstrom Schallplatten, and once before Truncate for 2023’s ‘Reptilian Tank’ EP.

Anetha is a French artist, DJ, producer, label manager, talent agency co-founder and a trained architect.

Transmitting the glossy textures of techno, trance and experimental music, Anetha whips up bouncy basslines, stomping kickdrums, glorious melodies and a sprinkling of melancholic motifs, sharing her sound in seminal clubs and legendary festivals worldwide. From the industrial setting of Berghain, the sleek surroundings of Hï Ibiza, the dome of Gashouder and the open-air haze of Stone Techno, Anetha has garnered a loyal audience across the Americas, Europe, Australasia and beyond. Delivering lush and luminous productions and DJ sets, the Bordeaux-based artist works with attention to detail, creative construction, and nimble mixing — as one would expect from an artist with an architectural background.

2024 marks the release of Anetha's long-awaited album on Mama told ya. The ten-track LP honours her ephemeral taste in electronic music, welding a palette of post-club, techno, trance, experimental, nu-wave, rave, and DnB, and features Anetha's own voice, literally and figuratively. The album tells the story of Anetha's trajectory so far and explores ecological awareness, femininity, toxic masculinity and unwarranted opinions in the music industry. In true Anetha style, she conveys these themes with playfulness and a touch of irony across the album.

Several releases colour Anetha's discography, from her debut EP 'Ophiuchus' on Berlin-based label Work Them in 2015 and a myriad of EPs, singles and remixes on imprints like Anagram and OAKS and her own label, Mama told ya.

Launched in 2019 and co-founded by Anetha and her skilled, close-knit team of friends and family, Mama told ya platforms rising stars and encourages them to express themselves through music, no matter the stage of their journey. Limited edition and earth-friendly merch, including clothing and fragrance, extends the realm of Mama told ya alongside label showcases.

And then, there's Fané.e. It's a new label from Anetha and the MTY family. Every release follows a seasonal schedule, where tracks will be available to download and stream for a finite period until blossoming once more the following season. The label aims to share high-quality, genre-fluid productions without the restrictions of a vinyl-led imprint and to cultivate a more environmentally friendly way to consume music. 

In 2020, Anetha launched the talent agency Mama loves ya to nurture emerging artists worldwide. When it comes to sustainability, the agency walks the walk. Mama loves ya works with the carbon management project Greenly, helping offset, reduce and compensate for its carbon footprint and decrease CO2 emissions. Actions include implementing eco-riders and operating an open calendar on the MLY website, showing promoters where and when each artist is due to play, thus reducing travel distance between bookings.

Born in Bordeaux to nu-wave and electroclash-inclined parents, Anetha moved to London and then Paris, where she studied and graduated in architecture. There, she co-founded the label and party series Blocaus in 2012, honing her skill as a DJ and shaping her profile on the Parisian scene for the guts of ten years.

Now, Anetha has evolved into a fully established and globally recognised artist, blurring the lines between art, music and fashion through her artistry and relationships with fashion designers Marine Serre and Rombaut. If anyone can balance the tasks of touring, producing, and co-managing two record labels and a talent agency with poise, it's Anetha.
