New York Times’ Ross Douthat on the State of American Politics

Missoula-born and UM educated, General McGuire retired from the US Army in 2012 after an illustrious 32-year career, one in which she accomplished many firsts; the first woman to head the Army’s Criminal Investigation Command and become the Provost Marshal General.

Heather McDowell on Responsible Mining

This week’s guest is Craig Cowie, Professor at the University of Montana’s Blewitt School of Law. Craig helps guide us through three of the most significant decisions in this recently concluded term of the US Supreme Court.

The first case is Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overturned Roe v Wade in June. Craig explains the five possible ways this could change abortion access in Montana. The next case is Oklahoma v Castro-Huerta, and Craig dives into the flip in reasoning stemming from a 200-year history of Indian Law. Lastly, we hear about West Virginia v EPA and Craig’s thoughts on the place of historical analysis in Supreme Court decisions.

I&I — Building Social Muscle

This week Justin is joined by DeAnna Bublitz, founder of DEER Camp. DEER Camp is trying to build a more diverse community of hunters by attracting underrepresented groups to the activity. DeAnna grew up in Minnesota and studied infectious diseases, a path that ultimately led her to labs with professors at the University of Montana.

In this episode, we learn about DeAnna’s journey to hunting and the experiences she’s had as a solo woman hunter. DeAnna talks about how it feels to hunt with different types of people and the way her level of involvement changes depending on who she’s with. She brings up the various barriers to entry, including cost and connections, and offers advice for first-time hunters, including befriending the local area biologist.

This week’s guest is Jeff Immelt, former CEO of General Electric and current venture partner at New Enterprise Associates. Jeff will be speaking at the University of Montana on September 27th as part of the Baucus Center’s Stockman Bank Speaker Series. He was kind enough to join Justin for a conversation in advance of his visit.

Justin and Jeff speak about shocks and crises and a course at Stanford Jeff teaches called Systems Leadership. As a teacher, Jeff reflects on the importance of mental health in student populations and how he’s noticed students today are more place restrictive when they look at their careers. Justin asks Jeff his thoughts on the popular perception that people just don’t want to work anymore, and what he advises young people when they say they want to make a difference.

In 2022, Eliza Donahue was caught in an avalanche while backcountry skiing. The accident left her with serious physical injuries, as well as mental and emotional trauma. In this episode, Justin speaks with Eliza and clinical social worker Justin Short, who founded a support group for those who’ve experienced loss in the outdoors like Eliza has. They discuss the cumulative nature of trauma, the emotional aftermath of a harrowing accident, and the healing role of community.

Melissa Sevigny on the Grand Canyon’s untold history

Christian Beckwith is a former editor of the American Alpine Journal and the co-founder of Alpinist Magazine. His current project, Ninety-Pound Rucksack, is a deep exploration of the 10th Mountain Division. Allan Savory was born in Zimbabwe and educated in South Africa. Through his experiences in game ranching, he developed the philosophy of holistic management. In 2009, Allan, his wife Jody Butterfield and several colleagues founded the Savory Institute in Boulder, Colorado, an international network of leaders committed to putting holistic management into practice.

Tracy McNew is executive director of the Center for Asbestos Related Disease (CARD) in Libby, Montana, and LeRoy Thom is the clinic board president. The CARD clinic provides critical services to the Libby community as they recover from the legacy of vermiculite mining. In this episode, Tracy and LeRoy discuss how the CARD is addressing the health impacts of asbestos exposure, the Affordable Care Act’s provisions to fund care for asbestos-related diseases, and the clinic’s legal battles with BNSF Railway.
