‘By the Tides’ was written in response to the tragedy surrounding the ongoing loss of life in the Mediterranean Sea. Many of those hoping to find the world another way are small children, separated from their families and drowned at sea. We hope desperately that the tide changes and this terrible season of our history can come to an end.

Ange: “I wrote this song for my daughter Amy in 2013 but it never made it to Bare Foot Folk. I've got dozens of other unrecorded songs but this one kept calling me back. 

As a parent I'm painfully aware that one day I won't be around to guide my daughter, and that she must develop the strength to stand on her own feet to survive the world we live in. 

Amy is now the age that I was when I was living on the streets in Ireland."

Lukas: “This song was another that we wrote during our 2016 EFDSS residency. A report that made the papers during our residency referenced more than 10,000 young carers between the ages of 5 and 7 in England and Wales. Those carers below the age of 8 are often unsupported because no one expects them to be taking on adult responsibilities. This song tells the story of one such carer.”

Lukas: “This song was a total gamble. We found the words for this online, neither of us knew it at all so we arranged our own version solely based on the lyrics. As a result this probably isn't the way this song is supposed to sound, but it's the way the song sounded to us.

Following extensive research (well, asking various people in folk clubs) we're pretty sure a lighter is a type of flat-bottomed barge used to transfer goods and passengers to and from moored ships...” 


Bonny Lighter-Boy (Roud 843)

Lukas: “This is our interpretation of a traditional song that has inspired countless recordings and variations. As far as we've been able to establish this version of the song is called The Berkshire Tragedy and is one of many variations of The Two Sisters.

It's easy to confuse it with Roud 263 - another song also called The Berkshire Tragedy which also features a miller and a murder but appears to have an entirely different history!”

Ange: “I once met a musician who gave me the distinct impression that, consciously or not, he held me and my forefathers directly responsible for the historical conflicts between my country and his own. I wrote these words in response. 

I wrote the tune Bearded Ted of Raddington in honour of my own grandfather. His name was Ted, he farmed the land in Raddington, and his prickly beard is one of my strongest and fondest memories of him.”

Lukas: “This was based on a news story we read during our 2016 EFDSS residency. Manfred Fritz Bajorat chose to leave behind the harsh winters of Germany and live his life at sea aboard the Sayo. Over time he lost contact with friends and family and then in February 2016 he was found drifting off the coast of Barobo having died in the hull slumped over his radio. The salt air, temperatures and strong winds had mummified his body - a grim and striking image which appeared in many of our tabloid newspapers.”

Ange: “This was the first traditional song that we arranged together as a duo. It's a song I had heard countless times but never really listened to until I heard the version by Lucy Ward and Bella Hardy on The Liberty to Choose. Those two really dragged me into the lyrics of the song for the first time, and from that introduction to the song I knew that I wanted to work on my own arrangement. Lukas introduced the mid-song time signature change just before we started recording!”

For the last 3 years I've posted a new Christmas Single and a Christmas Card out to everyone that has ever purchased anything from my website.

I have absolutely LOVED doing that.

... but this year, two things happened: The album release of Bring Back Home fell six weeks closer to Christmas than it was supposed to... and my customer address list increased in size (dramatically!).

The result of that was that although I wrote and recorded a new song for the Christmas Single this year it came down to a choice of sending out Christmas Cards or not getting drastically into debt on top of Christmas... I hope you'll all understand why I chose the first option...

So, this year, I've written a new song 'The Gift of Song' and bundled it up into a download called 'My Christmas EP' which includes my festive releases from the previous three years.

Nominated at the 2015 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and celebrated by The Telegraph as “one of Britain’s top folk musicians” Ange Hardy has grabbed the attention of the traditional folk music world by writing new material and embracing modern technologies whilst maintaining a traditional feel.

Alongside a staggering list of other accolades Ange was awarded FATEA Magazine’s “Female Vocalist of the Year” in 2013, “Album of the Year” in 2014 and “The Tradition Award” in 2015.

As a solo artist Ange performs with a 27-string Salvi Harp, three different guitars, a variety of low whistles, a bodhrán drum, a tambourine, and an Indian shruti box. Combined with her innovative and subtle use of live looping to build layers up vocal harmonies she’s one of the most diverse solo-artists you're likely to encounter.

In 2016 Ange is touring as a duo with Lukas Drinkwater who brings double bass, backing vocals, another guitar and a bold new dynamic to the stage.
