Lost Map Records are excited to welcome the long-awaited return of Manuela, the London and Munich based project comprising of vocalist and songwriter Manuela Gernedel and multi-instrumentalist and producer Nick McCarthy (formerly of Franz Ferdinand and FFS). Released as part of Lost Map’s PostMap Club subscription service in the month of May and available to stream and share now, Manuela’s first brand new music since 2017, ‘Coniine’, is a bittersweet off-kilter pop song about poison, death, beauty and innocence, featuring guest vocals from Laetitia Sadier, singer with legendary Anglo-French avant-pop band Stereolab. Manuela are heading out on tour next week, supporting Stereolab at dates around Europe, with more new music set to follow later in 2025.
 
About ‘Coniine’ Manuela writes: 
 
“Coniine is a poisonous chemical compound, which can be found in the plant hemlock and causes a paralysis of the nervous system, starting from the feet upwards. Infamously Socrates was sentenced to death by drinking a cup of poison hemlock. I wrote this song for a friend of ours who very sadly passed away a few years ago. His struggle is described via a chase and scramble through a desolate plain. However, the overall tone of the song is distinctly sweet and rich as to celebrate the beauty and innocence of the person and his life.”
 
A joyous gem of addictive, eclectic, off-the-wall and instantly refreshing DIY pop, Manuela’s self-titled debut album was released on Lost Map in 2017 and is long-since sold out on 12” vinyl. Austrian Manuela and her British-born husband Nick have been making music together since they first met at a youth club summer party in the late 90s in Bavaria, Germany, where they both grew up. They moved to Glasgow together some years later after Manuela, who is a visual artist, was offered a place at Glasgow School of Art to study painting. While living in Glasgow, Manuela performed with the band White Nights, who released one 7” EP via Paul Thompson’s NEW! label. Nick went on to join Franz Ferdinand, sell millions of records and tour the world, all the while continuing to make music with Manuela as Box Codax together with their long-term friend Alexander Ragnew, releasing two well-received albums Only An Orchard Away in 2006 and Hellabuster in 2011.
 
Manuela’s self-titled debut album received widespread support and acclaim from the likes of Pitchfork, Stereogum, Drowned in Sound, The Line of Best Fit, The Skinny and more. Forthcoming new material from the band is some of their strongest work to date – wry pop tunes with playful humour, sparkling production and lush arrangements to get swept away in completely.
