Angelia Word is a Chicago-based DJ, interdisciplinary artist, and curator. Her sound is influenced by ghetto, juke, and jungle, the rawness of lo-fi and classic house and a propensity for the sinister. Speed is her weakness: bouncing from lush and uncanny melodies to punchy percussion and vocals boiling with energy. She is co-founder of the FemmeDecks collective, whose mission is to radically transform the electronic music industry to represent its obscured diversity.

Opening with tracks by MCR-T, Miss Bashful and Mac Declos, this mix slides between bouncy, energetic grooves and synth dreamscapes anchored by tracks such as Furtive's 'Body and Mind', and Zvrra's 'Symmetry'. The last bit of the mix evolves into dark, club-driven tracks by Rorschack, LOIF, and Masseran.

Mixtape w/ Angelia Word

Mostly comprised of tracks released in the 1990s, and many from the Chicago and the Twin Cities, this set embodies the raw sound of Techno and Acid emerging from the Midwest in the 80s, and 90s. 

I was inspired to stick to only older tracks for this set after discovering Woody McBride’s EP “Basketball Heroes”, released in 1996 on his label Communique Records. Tracks released on Damon Wild’s label Synewave, originally founded in New York City, play a significant part in the set (I included a couple tracks from Synewave’s UK branch as well). If you listen closely you might hear slight variations between the Midwest and East Coast sound, which exude a crisp, minimalist tone, as opposed to the more playful grooves that were unfolding in Chicago. Lastly, I threw in a couple of surprise tracks released on the London label, Stay Up Forever.//
