Love Letter To All The Strangers I Will Never Know

It is as holy as hardening to have a part of your identity bred out of the memory of someone else.
We are all living memorials of people who affected us then moved on without us.
----
LYRICS:

The people we love do not ever really die, 
Or move away, 
Or leave, 
They stay inside, like re-shaping dough or a ghost or god or I don’t even know-
They are there. in your burning and yolky soul.
They are there. 
In the things we like and took and never returned, like albums or shoe laces or ways to pace a conversation and
In us.
Only enough for us to remember and keep moving on.

We speak like them in little ways. The words we use sound like theirs sometimes. 
Sometimes I move, or wink, or bite my cheek 
Touching ears in the small egg of a way he left in me

Sometimes I dance with other men as if he is still watching and proud that I am loving again 
or yell like he’d be proud of my use of curse words when he would say my empathy was my greatest fault
I shape my tongue, and shake off the salt, in the way he told me to stick it out in the face of tragedy
His ghost hands are moving my mouth and I am happily recalling for myself, the shape of his belief in me
Tongue out, eyes like factories, stomach ready to take on anything
I tell myself, like he would tell me, I am fearless and 
yet I remember the lost in my mouth. And now I remember the lost in my mouth.
Like an alphabet rope to choke on that a magician keeps pulling out of me.
A cord crucifying me to the parts that are only there because of him 
It is as bitter as sweet.

It is as holy as hardening to have a part of your identity bred out of the memory of someone else.

But I do not know if I resent it.
Even if we can no longer connect, we will always be connected. 
And at times that I want to forget, my movements are an encyclopedia of ways I have been dented by his touch. But at times when I want to remember, my movements are memorabilia of the days I was bending for just as much.

And today parts of me are missing and parts of me are wishing for more love space.
So today, I see that my skeleton is a vigil I light up night and day in a religious remembrance 
Of the old and soft, the lost ordinary 
It burns, love and loss brightly, into the new mundane
A mix bag of breathing through the muckiness of missing
I steal his punch lines and Netflix recommendations and the way he made grilled cheese
I carry on how she taught me to drink British tea and that can lessen any tragedy
I quote books that he told me to read and in this way
I breathe out a new stasis in the void’s place.

In this way, I believe the people I have loved still move through me even if they had walk away.
In this way, I believe I can take what I need and move without needing to stay in the grief of it all.

The people we loved left us with new tones of voice, that they used to use, a different way of understanding our own moods, how to make peace with the in-between interludes
And bones that burn candle lit statues
We can use the tiny fires that break out from their ashes in our abdomen 
But we cannot choose whether we were affected.
But we can choose what we make out of the fire.
