I've been having some very vivid dreams lately.

This piece started with me trying to capture that sense of floating, chasing/being chased and unreality, then developed into what feels like a 3-scene short film score. 

The title, "Onironauta", comes from the Italian word to describe someone who has lucid dreams, i.e. is aware when they're dreaming and can control them; a sort of astronaut for the unconscious world.

I'm keen to explore more of this kind of genre-bending film-music-type stuff - what do you think?

This is the first composition I've done to a brief: "compose a piece of music to enhance a tactile experience"

I chose the climbing wall - I love bouldering, it's a very social sport where most of the time you're only competing with yourself. The sense of achievement when you tackle a particularly difficult climb is sublime, and I've learnt so much about how to use my body from doing it.

ANGUS - gen1 (rhythm) 

This is the first of a series of experimental tracks, using generative techniques to create weird and wonderful sounds, rhythms, harmony and textures, then weaving them into something vaguely coherent.

Generative music is a term coined by Brian Eno to describe music that is ever-different and changing; tools are set up by injecting some chance and randomness into the equation, and then the music "generates" itself, different every time.

I smushed together a few different samples and ideas I'd had lately into these tools, including some drum breaks, a recording of a jazz orchestra, the sound of coffee being poured into a mug, and some dark synthesised sounds, to create this slightly jarring yet boppy piece.

gen2 is already in the works and will, of course, be something completely different...

gen1 (rhythm)

ANGUS - Gen2 (Resonance)

Gen2 (Resonance) is the second track built on generative techniques. The sounds are inspired by some of my favourite electronica and post-rock artists such as Four Tet, Bonobo, Mogwai, Boards of Canada and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

This one took me about 4 hours to write and about 14 days to mix and get the sounds fitting together nicely...

𓁹 Built from just 4 mangled samples, stretched and twisted to sonic extremes, this composition is ambient with an edge, shifting and changing, making you question whether you're in a dream or dancing with angels.

In a way, this one follows on from Onironauta - it's a track about dreamlike states and what you can find when you get there... The Ophanim, The Many Eyed Ones.

Ophanim

⍉ ANGUS - Pulsar - AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD 

Back in the day, I was a physicist, and I've taken that fascination with space, time and the cosmos with me into my music.  

This track takes the rhythmic precision of the pulsar, the serenity of the nebula, and the extreme, endless tension of the neutron star to bring you 7.5 mins of trance-y techno heaven.

Pulsars are rapidly rotating neutron stars that blast out huge pulses of electromagnetic radiation at precise intervals, ranging from seconds to milliseconds.

They have strong magnetic fields that funnel particles along their magnetic poles, accelerating them to relativistic speeds, which produces two powerful beams of light, one from each pole. 

These sweep around at a phenomenal speed as the pulsar rotates, giving a "lighthouse" effect from the perspective of Earth.
