As part of the BFI's Animation 2018 season at the BFI Southbank a group of black British artists were invited to share some of their work and experience in animation with an audience. After an introduction by Osbert Parker and a selected screening programme, a panel discussion was held with Osbert, Maybelle Peters, Keith Piper and Phoebe Boswell, chaired by the BFI’s animation curator, Jez Stewart. Black British Animators – screening + discussion at the BFI Southbank

The makers of Chuck Steel: Night Of The Trampires let us behind the scenes of the creation of the film. The event took place at Cardiff Animation Festival, which happened at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, on April 19-21. 

The stop-motion action comedy follows maverick cop Chuck Steel as he tries to save LA from a scourge of Trampires. Director Mike Mort, art director Bridget Phelan, animation supervisor Darren Thompson and producer Randhir Singh, spoke to animator Laura Tofarides about the film's 80s visuals, producing an animated feature in Bridgend and advice for young animators at Cardiff Animation Festival.

Q&A With Night Of The Trampires

The makers of Captain Morten and the Spider Queen pulled back the curtain on the creation of the film, at the first Cardiff Animation Festival, which happened at Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff, on April 19-21, as part of Anim18, a celebration of British animation. 

Co-produced by Telegael, in Ireland, Nukufilm in Estonia, Grid in Belguim and Calon, in Wales, the stop-motion film follows Morten, a young boy who is shrunk to the size of an insect and has to sail his own toy boat. 

Co-director Henry Nicolson, Telegael's Head of Puppets Emily Nicholson and producer Robin Lyons, share with us stories about how the film was made.
