Exported 4 individual tracks from the Korg MS20 as wav, lined them up in a new project then applied filters plus volume and panning as envelopes, adjusted envelopes throughout piece and exported final version.

Synthesised sounds and field recordings mixed

Process:
used three vst synths, these are:
1) Sonicprojects Op-X Free ,(oberheimer op-X emulator), voice preset "Pulse Solo Glide"
2)Korg Polysix, voice preset "P6 Ana Clav"
3) TAL noisemaker, voice preset "BS Dlean Flat Bass"

The field recordings are a neighbour drilling the wall adjoining my house and banging a door.  This is looped over in two different loop sections, (one left biased one right biased), and used as a background bed sound for the whole piece. both these tracks have a phasing effect on each other and have applied a flanging process.
The second field recording is a man on the street shouting some incomprehensible word , (sounds a bt like "Fillah" or "Feller"), this is slowed to 70% original speed then looped and chopped throughout.

Disquiet Junto Project 0237: Combination ABCs

Used field recordings of Cicadas at the open air pool, (in loop A only), and field recording of seagulls around morning time on a city street.  (There is some indistict human voice in both these recordings, plus some ambient street noise, cars, door slams etc.).  Using this source material built up atmos for each loop and cut rhythms out of sounds.
Used a voice recording with some wobbly pitch shift and cut little vocal bits using one phrase.  Also used this same phrase reversed audio to make some parts.

Disquiet Junto Project 0237: Combination ABCs
The Assignment: Build a 90-second composition from three 10-second segments.

Project Steps:

Step 1: Record three 10-second sound elements. Keep in mind that they will be layered subsequently in various combinations. You might find it useful to set one or more of the elements to loop naturally after 10 seconds, but you might also enjoy the seam where a given loop begins again.

Step 2: Label the three 10-second sound elements A, B, and C.

Step 3: Create a 90-second track of the following sequence of standalone and combined elements: A, B, C, A+B, A+C, B+C, A+B+C, A+B, A.

Step 4: Your track is complete. However, you may opt to go back in and adjust transitions and add effects

Seagull and Cicada - Disquiet0237

self indulgent stuff here this week!



I recorded myself doing this. Made a cup of coffee and sat down to work at lapop, headphones on. Rolled and smoked and drank coffee as I made six synth tracks then bounced them down to wav. Put on a little fx and chopped a really tiny bit.  You can here the mouse and the keyboard presses and the cup and saucer. And some coughing.
Stopped recording.
Put the recordings down over the synth tracks and cut some bits like the keyboard at the end, Then did a further mixdown, which I played out part of,very quietly while  recording the room again, then layered that over the middle part of the track. The sound of the laptop fan is loud, almost windy and, at one point you can hear a cop car go past outside.

It's quiet long. Sorry About That.

Disquiet Junto Project 0254: Fog and Steam
Make music from two provided samples.

For the 254th weekly project, we’re going to revisit the second project, from back in early January 2012.

I'm all about my DAW.
I have never performed and I'm only really comfortable in a “Studio” enviroment, (here meaning headphones and laptop!), twaeking, chopping, generating, moving,chopping,bouncing down,mixing,mixing,mixing. Always experimenting.
So...

Today I took a major step sideways and made my piece “live” as a one take recording.

How this came about:
I was given a present of an android tablet recently, I got some apps from the play store, many of which were great, all free. I could talk about these iin more detail, but it's besides the point here.

One of these apps was EtherPad.
EtherPad is a “multitouch performance surface” and real time synthesizer for Android, made by Paul Batchelor using Csound.  

Today I connected my tablet to a Zoom H6 and started recording bits and pieces, (I intended to cut up these samples to use as source material), from various apps.  When I powered up EtherPad I just played this piece.  I knew as soon as I was done that it was finished.
It's a bit minimal, being only a single instrument and I only play maybe six notes, (not counting internote glides!), so if you are not digging my schtick this time out just write it off as my narcissism getting the better of my musical taste and forgive!

I looked up EtherPad online and found it's been renamed “EtherSurface”, but the version I have is defintely called EtherPad.  Paul Batchelor's site, (listed in the about tab of the app), is no more, but I found the source code and some csound forumposts where Paul is talking about the app, here are some links if you are interested.

Four Space Driver (LIVE) - Disquiet 0282

The chosen chord was : Dm9
Three synths, (VSTi synths), played into Zoom H6 one at a time.
Resulting wavs reloaded and processed (volume, pan, effects).

First Synth is a Polysix Bass Arpegiattor. One Chord plays for 100 seconds.
Second Synth is A Korg MS 20, the midtones. One Chord many hits in different sequences.  Waves Enigma Hallucino Spread Effect applied, (pan delay), for more boy and character.
Third Synth is another Polysix, an Analog Pizzo with no sustain. Many short hits. Chopped into time with synth two, (111bpm aprox.)

Result is a driving tech drone, industrial yumminess you could almost dance to.

Disquiet Junto Project 0300: The 300th Project
3 chords x 100 seconds

Step 1: For the 300th consecutive weekly Disquiet Junto project, choose a chord. Read the 6 steps of these instructions all the way through before making a decisions about instrumentation (Step 2) or recording (Steps 3 and 4). Understanding the intended end result will potentially influence those decisions.

Step 2: Choose three different instruments on which to play the chord selected in Step 1.

Step 3: Record yourself playing for 100 seconds that chord on the first of the instruments you chose in Step 2. You may want to record slightly longer than 100 seconds and edit back. Not every instrument has infinite sustain. You may need to use different techniques (strumming, sequencing, preparing, etc.) to achieve the 100 seconds. Consider those different techniques and the role they’ll have in the resulting sound.

Step 4: Repeat Step 3 for each of the other two instruments from Step 2. Consider how the three instruments, as well as the techniques you employ to play them, will correlate with each other.

Step 5: Layer the three tracks you have recorded. Perhaps fade in at the start and out at the end.

Step 6: Bonus round: Your piece is completed, but if you have the time and interest, consider subtly tweaking with filters and other means one or more of the three track you recorded.

Five More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: If your hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to include the project tag “disquiet0300” (no spaces) in the name of your track. If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to my locating the tracks and creating a playlist of them.

Step 2: Upload your track. It is helpful but not essential that you use SoundCloud to host your track.

Step 3: In the following discussion thread at llllllll.co please consider posting your track:

Step 4: Annotate your track with a brief explanation of your approach and process.

Length: The finished track should be roughly 100 seconds long.
