סמל ראשון בראל חדריה שמואלי זכרונו לברכה הובא אמש (שני) למנוחות לאחר שנאבק במשך תשעה ימים על חייו, בעקבות פציעתו בהתפרעויות בגבול רצועת עזה. משפחתו שיגרה מכתב לרמטכ"ל, למפכ"ל ולקצינים בכירים נוספים בצה"ל ובמג"ב, בו היא דרשה להקים ועדת חקירה צבאית לאירוע. עורך הדין רן כהן רוכברגר, לשעבר הסנגור הצבאי הראשי ועורך הדין של משפחת שמואלי, פירט היום בריאיון לאמיר איבגי את הסיבות שהובילו לדרישת המשפחה להקים ועדת חקירה: "התדריכים והנהלים הועברו ללוחמים ביום חמישי. בראל הגיע רק בשישי, ולכן לא קיבל את התדריכים הנדרשים. בנוסף, הקצין איחר להגיע לגזרה בגלל רכב תקול". במכתב שנשלח דרשה המשפחה "לא לגלגל את האחריות לש"ג" ושיינקטו צעדים פיקודיים משמעותיים וחריפים נגד האחראים. עורך הדין כהן רוכברגר טען: "הליקויים קיימים בכמה רבדים ולא רק ברמה הטקטית. צריך ועדת חקירה צבאית, אנחנו רוצים להאמין שהצבא יבדוק את עצמו בהגינות ובאופן ביקורתי ונוקב"
