Grapeskin is a genre of modern electronic music that combines heavy usage of ambient, atmospheric wet effects with extensive water sampling. The sampling of water splashes, bubbles, drips, etc. is often manipulated to resemble hip-hop drums, thus creating percussion that is mostly, if not completely, made of water sounds. Varying amounts of 'wet' delay, reverb, flanger, and filter effects are utilized on nearly every instrument; these effects coupled with ambient water noise (waves or rain for example) are intended to simulate the feeling and sound of water, underwater, and/or caves. Common instruments used are electric pianos and keyboards, bells, and hollow synths. Vocals are usually distant and/or distorted with subtle vibrato. The name Grapeskin refers to the skin of a grape that neatly encapsulates the juicy, essential water within the fruit.
