This is the book that ended John M. Allegro's career. After TIME magazine printed his assertion that Jesus was in fact, a mushroom, Allegro was forced to resign from his university position, his publisher apologized for the book and Allegro was never taken as scholar again.

Allegro, who was once described as "The Liberace of Biblical Scholarship" died of a heart attack in 1988, on his 65th birthday.
