Inspired by the Mexican club culture of the 20th century: Los salones de baile, where fancy dressing was a must, sweaty dancing went off, and latin music —such as danzón, mambo, salsa, chachachá and merengue— would blast all night long.

Stepping into the mix this time around is amita, a Japanese-American DJ based out of NYC. Her work usually starts at 140 before rapidly stepping on the gas toward 160 and beyond, with an emphasis on Japanese and international juke. The result is tremendous. 

Per AMITA: "In curating this mix, I reflected upon the concept of touch starvation and short term proximity. Last year, I made it my mission to better understand how loneliness manifests in my life, and how it can impact my self worth and day to day life. As I percolated on these questions, I also found myself going to club settings more often. There was something about moving and pulsing in crowds, dancing and shifting amongst each other that gave me a sense of security. Flashes of lights allowing us to only see specific angles of people at rhythmic moments gave a sense of anonymity. Bumping against dancers, accepting that we were part of a collective moment together only to not see each other again. The juxtaposition between the hot, crowded dancer floor, being shaking by movement and bass, and the moments after leaving the club where you are hit with brisk air and silence, always reminded me that these short moments of proximity are reminders that I am actually not as alone as I think I am.

This mix is chaotic yet purposeful, being driven by bass and fast rhythms. It is heavily inspired by moments described prior and the catharsis  of these feelings. I hope you enjoy!"

It’s an honor and privilege to bring Filipino-American artist/producer and Planet Queer co-organizer Anito Soul into the mix, out of NYC.

Anito refers to ancestor spirits, nature spirits, and deities in Philippine folk animism. They are a co-organizer of the creative collective planet queer, a resident of 8 Ball Community Radio, and their sound is rooted in jungle, footwork, budots, field recording, world sounds, and anything bass- or breaks-heavy. Their debut visual album, “Amen, Anito!”, was released through Feeltrip Records/Balikbayan Worldwide. It explores elements of Filipino culture, serving as a meditation on relationships to land, spirituality, and what it means to be a balikbayan, a term referring to both shipping boxes and Filipinos returning home after spending time abroad.

Their mix tonight is a wonderful sonic jungle through all of the above. I open and close.
