Jon Gurd returns to Anjunadeep with the announcement of his latest album ‘Phoenix’, out on April 8th.

‘Phoenix’ follows the release of Jon’s acclaimed album ‘Lion’, out summer 2020, which reached #3 on the iTunes Dance chart and gained support from tastemaker DJs including Solomun, Stephen Bodzin, Adriatique, Ida Engberg and Shadow Child. Whilst ‘Lion’ explored themes of loss ‘Phoenix’ takes inspiration from themes of rebirth, marking the start of a new chapter.

“Phoenix was written during the UK lockdown last year. When things at home got to a pretty low point I asked myself what is the most empowering thing I can do right now and the answer was to make a new album. I’ve always wanted to make an album called Phoenix. I like the idea of rebirth and coming back stronger after big challenges.”

A respected selector and producer, Jon came through the UK underground in the early 2000s as resident DJ at the legendary Slinky in Bournemouth, warming up for the likes of Mauro Picotto and Paul Van Dyk. His early productions were championed by Paul Woolford, Sasha, Lee Burridge, James Zabiela, and Sander Kleinenberg, and Jon soon found himself travelling the world performing alongside the artists he’d been opening for not long before.

Following the release of the first single ‘Emergence’, Jon Gurd now shares the second single ‘Open’ ahead of the album release. Leading with characteristic bold basslines and cascading melodies, Jon showcases his intricate production techniques reminiscent of Jon Hopkins, Jacques Green and Bonobo.

“A lot of the album is about getting close to the bone of feeling, a lot like Lion was in a way, but this time trying to translate old subconscious memories into feeling. Memories of euphoria when I just started clubbing 20 years ago. The excitement of discovering and dancing to music for the first time. The feeling of connection on the dance floor with people you’ve never met before. The after parties, the whole thing.”

In celebration of the album release, Jon will be playing a headline show at Colours Hoxton, London on the 8th of April, following successful sets at London’s iconic venues Fabric and Printworks.

‘Phoenix’ is the latest album to be released on Anjunadeep, described by Billboard as “one of dance music’s ultimate tastemaker labels”. The label is known for discovering talents like Lane 8, Dusky, Yotto, and Ben Böhmer.

Hailing from Rotterdam, Netherlands-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Talee makes his debut on Reflections with his mesmerising EP ‘My Mother Was A Synthesizer’. 

Born out of a psychedelic experience, Talee first emerged on the scene in 2020 with his remix of Belgian Trance DJ Jonas Steur’s 'Fall To Pieces’, landing straight into Spotify’s New Music Friday Dance and showcasing his unique flair. Following a successful debut, Talee revealed his first AA-side projects on Berlin-based record label Disco Halal in 2022 under the mentorship of label-had Moscoman, touring the projects at 20+ live shows across the Netherlands. 

Inspired by the likes of LCD Sound System, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and James Blake, Talee’s new EP blends an array of vintage synthesizers, guitar licks and electronic beats with his voice, blurring the lines between genres to cement his own hybrid sound. The project explores the theme of family dynamics, from the intimate and distant emotions, and all the moments in between, while celebrating the strangers that become chosen family overtime.

In September 2023, Talee was awarded ‘Best Producer of Rotterdam’ by The Grand Prix of Rotterdam - an emerging talent initiative in the Netherlands. He is now set to play the main stage for Rotterdam’s Liberation Day Festival in May 2024, which is host to several thousand attendees.

Hailing from Australia, Luke Warren aka Mircolot has been a fixture of Australia's electronic underground for the better part of a decade. Noted for his evocative textures, organic grooves and dubby rhythmic structures, Microlot's craft shines through vividly, making each one of his creations an absorbing experience. On the strength of releases for Pablo Bolivar's Seven Villas, the Sydney resident made his Sound Avenue debut in 2021 with a remix of Madloch and Subnode's 'Utopia', a project which would lead to a two-track showcase via label affiliate Crossfade Sounds in 2022.

DJ and producer Jon Gurd releases his ten-track LP ‘Lion’ today on Anjunadeep. The album release comes after four singles, which have seen support from the likes of electronic heavyweights such as Solomun, Stephen Bodzin, Alan Fitzpatrick, Adriatique, Gorgon City, and Shadow Child.

A respected selector and producer, Jon came through the UK underground in the early 2000s as resident DJ at the legendary Slinky in Bournemouth, warming up for the likes of Mauro Picotto and Paul Van Dyk. His early productions were championed by Paul Woolford, Sasha, Lee Burridge, James Zabiela, and Sander Kleinenberg, and Jon soon found himself travelling the world performing alongside the artists he’d been opening for not long before.

His burgeoning DJ career was put on hold in 2010 when Jon went through two life-changing experiences - the suicide of his older brother, and his young son’s diagnosis of severe epilepsy.

“These two events completely changed my motives for making music, and made me wonder if I was to even carry on doing it at all”.

After a hiatus, Jon’s music became faster and darker, described by Resident Advisor as “jet-black techno”. He collaborated with Alan Fitzpatrick and Reset Robot, and won support from the likes of Adam Beyer, Loco Dice, Scuba, Nicole Moudaber, and Pan-Pot. 

Following another break from music, Jon released an EP on Sasha’s Last Night On Earth imprint, which he cites as a transformative milestone, which led him to create ‘Lion’.

“I was extremely fragile, trying to piece my life back together after what you could probably describe as a complete nervous breakdown, not sure of my sound or what I was trying to achieve, but was just going with the feeling... Getting that EP signed kind of made me sit up and take notice.

It felt as though a clear path was forming. This led me to make the album Lion, and when I look back on my career in many year’s time maybe releasing Lion on Anjunadeep will be the big milestone, let’s see. It certainly feels as exciting!”

Written in late 2019, and inspired by themes of loss and rebirth, ‘Lion’ is a deeply personal album born out of a tumultuous period that has shaped Jon’s life.

“It felt like a release of emotion when writing it. It’s about exploring the emotions that we go through as humans… the emotions that come and go, our place in the universe, being grateful for being here, spreading love and helping people get through tough times.”

In support of Jon's son, Jon and Anjunadeep are raising money for UK charity KIDS. KIDS provide emotional and practical support to over 13,500 disabled children, young people and their families across the UK.
