Few albums manage to evoke a time and place with such startling effect as the unlikely collaboration Leave the Bones (out August 6th), between the multi-generational Haitian band Lakou Mizik and Grammy-winning electronic music artist Joseph Ray.

Since its inception Lakou Mizik has sought to re-define people’s conceptions of Haiti through its music. The nine piece band, formed in 2010, is emblematic of the melting pot that is Haiti’s musical culture. Lakou’s figurehead, Sanba Zao, one of only ten original Sanba poets left, played a central role in Haiti’s Rasin (roots) movement of the 1980s which sought to re-imagine traditional Haitian Vodou music through radical experimentation with modern instruments. This spirit of Haiti’s rich musical history underpins Lakou Mizik today; a multi-generational genre-blending ensemble that plays traditional Haitian music with a punk energy and a deep sense of their heritage. 

Joseph Ray, a Grammy winner and founding member of the pioneering Platinum selling electronic music trio, NERO, had never heard of Lakou when he arrived in Haiti in 2015, having volunteered to teach a course at Haiti’s only music production and audio engineering school, the Artist's Institute. Ray stumbled on Lakou at a tiny beach side club in Jakmel; the scene that night was frenetic and ecstatic, evocative of the spirit of Ray’s early electronic music clubbing experiences. The band’s organic power entranced Ray, who saw the possibility of merging his cinematic electronic production style with Lakou’s own traditional dance rhythms. Their subsequent six year journey led to Leave the Bones, teaching Ray more about himself and music than any other period in his life.

Today, Lakou Mizik and Ray premiered the album’s debut single, ‘Ogou (Pran Ma Kwen)’, via NPR World Cafe, giving a telling look at what’s to come. Characterised by vibrant strings, traditional Haitian rhythms and a jubilant chorus, ‘Ogou (Pran Ka Mwen)’ is an impassioned plea to the Vodou spirit of Iron and War for protection from the brutality of life’s daily battles - “Ogou, you brought me here, take care of me.”

By way of preview, Leave the Bones weaves us through the euphoric swagger of No Rival!, to the bluesy beautiful melancholy of Lamizè Pa Dous (Misery Isn’t Sweet). It takes us to dance in the mystical underworld of Bade Zile (Under the Island), yet offers lessons for the living, reminding us we should not underestimate those who seem easy to walk upon on Zeb Atè (Grass of the Earth), and that we are all one people, Nou Tout Se Moun.

In August last year, Anjunadeep released ‘Leave the Bones’, the powerful album born of an unlikely collaboration between multi-generational Haitian band Lakou Mizik and GRAMMY-winning electronic music artist Joseph Ray. 

The album garnered global attention, gaining support from the world’s premiere tastemakers for it’s daring sound design and vibrant depiction of Haitian Vodou culture. National Public Radio called the album a “mesmerizing, haunting and uplifting journey into the heart of Haitian culture”. The Times rated ‘Leave the Bones’ four out of five stars, whilst Mixmag named it a “celebration of creativity and possibility in the face of adversity”. The French-Canadian newspaper Le Devoir called it an album “that exposes the richness of the musical culture of the Antilles to the entire planet”, whilst global music magazine Songlines called it “message-driven, lovingly made; an album to play on repeat.” The album saw equally fervent recognition on radio, quickly reaching #1 on the NCAA world music charts and garnering support from Pete Tong, Danny Howard, and Sian Eleri at BBC Radio 1, Don Letts and Radcliffe & Maconie at BBC Radio 6, BBC Radio 3, NPR, NTS, KCRW, KEXP, SiriusXM Chill, Resonance FM, Radio X, Jazz FM and Worldwide FM.
 
Now, almost six months later, Anjunadeep is proud to announce ‘Leave the Bones (Remixed)’, an eclectic collection of remixes featuring a worldly swathe of pioneering artists including DJ Koze, Henrik Schwarz, NERO, Michael Brun, Laolu, Gardy Girault, Martin Roth, and more. Featuring four unheard remixes courtesy of Laolu, Girault, and Roth, ‘Leave the Bones (Remixed)’ also includes previously released tracks supported by the likes of &ME, Hunee, Black Coffee, Laurence Guy, Dixon, HOSH, and Tim Sweeney (Beats in Space). 

A truly unique compilation representing many nationalities, ‘Leave the Bones (Remixed)’ demonstrates the universal danceability and expression of traditional Haitian music.

South Africa has long been a hotbed of innovative electronic music, and a source of inspiration for producers around the world.

Over the past few years we have been fortunate to work with some incredible South African artists and are delighted to present ‘Anjunadeep South Africa’, a seven-track compilation featuring exclusive new music from Karyendasoul, BokkieUlt and DJ Buhle, alongside tracks from Bantwanas feat. Pops Mohamed & Sobantwana, Da Capo, Cornelius SA & Sebee and Heavy-K & Ami Faku.

The release will be rolled out ahead of Anjunadeep's debut South Africa Open Air shows, taking place in Johannesburg and Cape Town on March 29 and March 30 respectively. The shows feature a stacked line up including EP artists DJ Buhle, Cornelius SA, Da Capo and Karyendasoul, as well as Ben Böhmer, James Grant & Jody Wisternoff, Nicky Elisabeth and FKA Mash.

The various artists compilation is the first international release of its kind on the label, and showcases the best in melodic electronic music coming out of the country.

'Anjunadeep South Africa' is out February 28.

The ends of days are ones with which Damian Lazarus is familiar, but, much like his biblical namesake, he too, has come back from the brink and risen to fight on, his career is interwoven with themes of survival and re-birth. Fittingly then, his second solo album does not wallow in our current dark times, but charts a path of hope. Flourish, offers a glimpse of a new world worth living in and surviving for.

Lazarus is a true DJ, an artist at home taking crowds on incredible journeys across the globe. He averages 150 + shows a year, including his own landmark events like Day Zero and Get Lost. He is nothing if not restless, no down time for Damian. Since February he has holed himself in the studio finalizing and reforming ideas that had been brewing for years. It took a pandemic to ground the DJ, but what emerged is a more fully realized vision of Lazarus as producer.

Flourish takes us through the many lives of Damian Lazarus, who, as he has grown older, and traversed the globe, has come to more deeply examine the role the dance floor plays in his own life and that of others. With parties cancelled, it would have been easy to wallow, but instead urgency took hold, and isolated Italian countryside Damian took the space to tackle the larger questions he has been grappling with for years.

“My early ideas about a new album were quite dark, pessimistic even, I had long been thinking and worrying about the problems of the world. Then the global pandemic and subsequent lockdown began and my fears seemed to become reality. But while writing these themes actually started to transform in an uplifting way. The new songs came together quite quickly, with renewed impetus, and mutated into a more positive outlook. Questions about faith, religion and spirituality all appeared amidst the darkness and fear, but in those times of quiet solitude and creation, I came to realise we can emerge into the sun and flourish on the other side.”

As anyone who has watched Lazarus DJ can attest, his inspirations are deep and varied, criss crossing show tunes, drum n bass, jazz, electro, soul, house, techno and everything in-between. This album reflects his immersion in a multitude of scenes over the years, from the early days of London drum n bass, to his role as a figurehead in the electroclash scene, and of course the significant impact his Crosstown Rebels label has had on contemporary underground house and techno. His shapeshifting is down to his relentless passion for new sounds and scenes, and it’s this dedication to the music that has seen him survive the boom and bust cycles and fads of club culture. It is this commitment to the outer edges of the dancefloor that has welcomed a resurgence of Crosstown as of late, a renewed reminder of Damian’s passion for showcasing the rising and revered alike

Flourish is far from a box of functional DJ tools, in the same way as Damian’s debut album Smoke The Monster Out or the more worldly outings in his brace of albums with the Ancient Moons. It’s a personal, brave and varied body of work. It’s also the work of an artist who has grown over the ten years since his last solo album. Lazarus plays with nuances of texture, tempo and style to create a rich and dense album that takes us on an odyssey that is at times both dark and uplifting. Vocals of his own cast an intimate shadow over the album with those of his sole collaborator Jem Cooke offering a soothing balance amidst the madness.
