Over the last two decades, Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats label has launched the careers of some of the most respected names in electronic music: Andrew Bayer, ARTY, Audien, ilan Bluestone, Seven Lions and Mat Zo, to name just a few. In January 2021, the label launched Anjunabeats Rising: a new EP series highlighting the next generation of producers and championing emerging artists from around the world. 

Anjunabeats Rising introduced over 40 new acts to the label during 2021, including GVN, Alex Sonata & TheRio, Naz, Stephen Kirkwood, HRRTZ, Bexxie and more. The series is now back for its 16th volume, with new music from 28mm, Nancie and ADZ. 

Merging dark melodic house, techno and breaks, 28mm started off working on official remixes for imprints such as Astralwerks and Ultra. He’s gone on to release on a myriad of labels and receive support from the likes of Above & Beyond, Solardo, Ferry Corsten, Massane, Gabriel & Dresden and Tritonal.

Since dropping her debut track, ‘Get Likes’, on Universal/Capitol, Nancie has played at legendary venues like PACHA and Ministry Of Sound, and remixed for the likes of MEDUZA, Empire Of The Sun, and Imanbek. She continues her winning streak with her latest track, ‘Human’. 
Newcastle-based producer Adz steps into the limelight as a producer after honing his craft behind the scenes as a studio engineer. His tracks and remixes have been playlisted on Apple Music’s danceXL, and he has upcoming collabs with Cristoph and Harry Diamond.

ADZ - Falling

The mastermind behind heavyweight Anjunabombs such as ‘Doormatica’, ‘Paper Jet’ and ‘Disco Belle’, Paul Keeley is rightly regarded as one of the label’s big hitters. Which is why, after what has been something of an extended hiatus, we’re glad to see him back and hitting the ground running in 2011 with the storming ‘Relic’. Amongst a glittering array of top-notch tracks on 'Anjunadeep:03', the Original Mix stands out as an essential piece of listening. Moody yet melodic, dark yet dreamy, its metallic synths oscillate between sharp and soothing, layered over a soft patter of bubbling, twinkling keys.

‘Relic’ gets the remix treatment from French producer Seb Dhajje, who is no stranger to throwing himself into reworking killer tracks having done so for the likes of Röyksopp and Way Out West previously. Winter / Cyan's Child" is the hot new two tracker from Michael Cassette, aka Matti Heininen and Erkka Lempiäinen. Over the last 12 months these two Finns have established themselves as the masters of 80's inspired melodic house music, first with Shadow's Movement, one of the highlights of SOS' excellent Balance compilation, and more recently with their remix of Paul Keeley's "A Sort Of Homecoming", which stormed the Beatport charts and picked up BBC Radio One airplay on James Zabiela's Glastonbury Essential Mix. 

Winter is a real feelgood gem, with 80's synths and riffs riding bareback across a magical, goose-bump inducing groove. Cyan Child is a more intense affair and sounds like a natural follow up to last year's debut single "Zeppelin", picking up a huge reaction when road-tested at the pair's recent performance at Ministry of Sound.

With this new single and another EP lined up on on Anjunadeep under their Komytea guise, not to mention a monster bootleg in the works, it looks set to be a big year for Michael Cassette…

Matti Heininen and Erkka Lempiäinen have delivered plenty of magical Michael Cassette moments ever since they exploded onto the scene with the wonderful ‘Zeppelin’ and ‘David’ and this latest themed step on their musical journey is the perfect companion to the summer months.
‘Magenta Sunset’ represents an exciting change of tack and shift of focus for the boys; lifting out some of the distinctive 80s house hooks and delving deep into progressive terrains but keeping to the essential spirit of joyous vibes you can almost picture the kaleidoscopic streaks of colour in the sky as the sun hides away for the night as the track breezes along and unwinds gently on a cocktail of soft, transcendent melodies and blissful ambiances.
‘Wateresque’ sees the Cassette sound sailing purposefully further into unchartered waters, with its downtuned bass, metallic synths, percussive snaps and tumbling keys creating an edgier, moodier piece interspersed with a lingering, slow-burning melody as beautiful as any the duo have crafted previously, making this package an unmissable addition to the Anjunadeep collection.

Life hasn’t always been easy for Michael Cassette. In a life of sadness, this 80s-inspired electronic producer seeks refuge in his studio; basking in the bright, neon sparkle of retro synths and soaking up the warm embrace of classic analogue grooves.

Since emerging with the huge ‘Shadow’s Movement’ in 2007, he has become a revered force amongst electronic music lovers who yearn for the nostalgic feel-good factor of the 80s. DJs like Eric Prydz, James Zabiela, Laurent Garnier and SOS have all lauded his unique ability to transform past musical memories into moments of contemporary club magic, disco blogs and dance music bibles (Mixmag, DJMagazine and iDJ) have given him glowing reviews, while Anjunadeep continue to celebrate him as their most unique and promising studio talent.

Both reassuringly familiar and assuredly fresh, Michael Cassette’s ‘Temporarity’ is the perfect blend of uplifting 80s sounds and ultra-clean production sensibilities. A complete and cohesive journey, it begins on the progressive cosmic boogie of ‘My Name Is Michael Cassette’ before sweeping us up in the familiar synth-disco bliss of ‘Shadows Movement’. A cover of Miami Vice’s iconic soundtrack ‘Crockett’s Theme’ is like a smooth, sugary shot of Floridan sunshine to the ear, while vocal moments like ‘Through The Windows’ and ‘Nevermore’ touch on the classic 80s tradition of classy synth-pop. 

There are progressive club sounds too in the bittersweet glow of ‘Magneta Sunset’, the uplifting ‘Zeppelin’ and the hypnotic flutters of ‘Kilimanjaro’, while forthcoming single ‘Ghost In The Machine’ – released 22nd November alongside a Spirit Catcher remix – is another Michael Cassette classic in the making. Showing off the producer’s versatility, the album closes on some sombre Tangerine Dream-esque electronica in the emotive ‘Funeralia’.
