In 2019, Reflections gave a name to a hugely successful downtempo compilation series on Anjunadeep. With the launch of the imprint, the second release kickstarts a new various artists EP series, welcoming a new era of talent to the Anjunafamily across the ambient, downtempo and alternative music spectrum, starting with ‘Reflections 01’.

‘Reflections 01’ features six stunning original compositions from Moldovan producer Michael FK, six piece collective Northling, British producer Sleep Surgeon, audiovisual artist Lyndsie Alguire, Montréal producer Lost In City and Leeds based composer Jessie Marcella.

Hailing from Leeds, UK producer and composer Jessie Marcella presents her first solo EP on the newly launched Reflections imprint with ‘Untitled’. Following the release of EP opener ‘Untitled 01’, which featured on the label’s inaugural various artist EP ‘Reflections 01’ earlier this month, Jessie now shares three additional ambient compositions completing the package.

Supported by the likes of Sian Eleri and Jaguar on BBC Radio 1, the British newcomer, who is classically trained in the clarinet, crafts her unique sound through melding together both live and electronic instrumentation.

Electronic music heavyweight Martin Roth will release his second full-length, piano-led album ‘Mono No Aware’ on Reflections, the new sister label of Anjunadeep. Roth is well-known for his ability to glide between genres while maintaining a distinct, instantly-identifiable style, and his new release is no exception. With this 13-track album, Roth moves away from the club space and into his classical pianist background to explore themes of impermanence, fatherhood and simplicity.

Roth prefers to describe the album as minimalistic rather than ambient with each track stripped back to create space for one leading sound, instrument or melody. This results in an immersive listening experience, and instead of being pulled in multiple directions, we’re gently led to wherever Roth wants us to go.

This skill reflects the depth and breadth of Roth’s production experience. He learnt piano from a young age and bought his first synthesizer in his late teens. Around the same time he dived headfirst into Frankfurt’s underground, spending his weekends submerged in the sounds and selections of Sven Väth and Culture Beat’s Torsten Fenslau at institutions like Omen and Dorian Gray. When Roth began playing local clubs, Frankfurt’s melancholic influence impacted his music and has remained ever since, regardless which genre he’s turned his hand to.

‘Mono No Aware’ is the second album released on Reflections, and is a further exploration of Roth’s analog past. Martin released his first low-tempo LP ‘An Analog Guy In A Digital World’ in 2020 and says it’s no coincidence his two full-length albums are classical-leaning. His emotions pour out his hands and into the piano, and ‘Mono No Aware’ is an amalgamation of these stories and experiences. He began the writing process in mid-2021 while the world was still under COVID’s thumb, and says lockdown in Germany was the perfect backdrop to write an album steeped in melancholia. The nostalgia and impermanence even extends to the name – ‘Mono No Aware’ is a Japanese phrase which translates to ‘an awareness that everything fades away.’

Roth’s ambition for ‘Mono No Aware’ is that it touches the listener in the same way his first album did. “When I released An Analog Guy In A Digital World, suddenly I received messages from people all over the world,” Roth says. “They were long, heartfelt, heartbreaking messages, about how a certain track supported them through the hardest moments of their lives. The people who write these messages have no idea how much they are supporting me, so I hope the music on Mono No Aware touches people in the same way.”

Reflections presents the second instalment of their new various artists EP series with ‘Reflections 02’, welcoming a new wave of ambient and downtempo talent to the Anjunafamily roster.

Opening ‘Reflections 02’ is Paris-based producer Douran with a beat-less cinematic revision of his 2021 Anjunadeep release ‘Passing Lights’, followed by classically-trained composer Stelios Vassiloudis with ‘Nowhere To Go’. Next up, British producer Simon Shackleton presents a new low-tempo rework of his track ‘Traumstaat’, having seen initial release on ‘Anjunadeep 13’ earlier this year.

Another familiar face to the Anjuna roster, Igor Garanin makes his Reflections debut with an original production, ‘Daydreams’. Rounding off the packaging is US-based ambient producer Ann Annie, showcasing their flair for soft ambient productions through modulated synths and signature tape manipulated sounds with ‘Moons Apart’ (Reprise). Closing the EP is Dutch classical composer and producer Brombaer, with an ethereal original composition ‘Desert Stars’.

Montréal based audiovisual artist, classically trained pianist and prolific producer, Lyndsie Alguire makes music that’ll soundtrack your dreams, and her latest album ‘…like butterfly wings’ is testament to that. Alguire’s debut release on Anjuna’s Reflections imprint highlights her uncanny ability to turn a feeling into song form, with the 11-track album rooted in nature and childhood innocence.

Lyndsie self-released her first album in 2013. It’s called ‘Suspended In Light’ and feels more raw and textured than her latest releases but has that same ethereal glow. She’s self-released an album pretty much every year since then, with some more percussion-heavy, others big on melody, others leading with synth. Each one is connected by the same innocent thread, and her hope is that people will re-connect with the naivety of childhood when they listen to her music.

‘…like butterfly wings’ is Lyndsie’s 9th album and her first label release. It’s fresh like a breeze and free of beats, with tracks structured around a handful of piano notes so expertly placed they sound alight with power.

This album is rooted in the beauty and mystique of nature, and Alguire lets the music inform the track names which is why they read like poetry. The first single on the album, ‘through the boughs of the garden’, is out now.

Stelios Vassiloudis has worked in multiple genres throughout his decades-long career, but feels most at home with experimental, low-tempo music. He trained as a classical musician and composer in New York, and was busy learning to write film scores when he first discovered electronic music. As a result, his exploration of the genre was rooted in the intricacies of Bach and the innovation of Beethoven. He was drawn to the experimental, experiential sounds of Massive Attack and Portishead, which led him down a progressive house-shaped rabbit hole.

In 2011 he released his first low-tempo album on Bedrock, and then focused on club music right up until the pandemic hit in 2020, which finally afforded him time and space to return to his cinematic, introspective roots. Stelio’s second low-tempo album ‘All Else Fails’ followed on BALANCE in March 2022.

His latest EP ‘Permanent’ out on November 21 2022 on Reflections, occupies a similar space. The five-track EP encourages deep listening because each production has so many complex, interweaving elements. The time signatures are unexpected and the instrument selections unique. Wood chimes, bells, guzheng, flute, suona and piano all dance together, creating coherency with a hint of chaos.

This sense of creative freedom shines through the EP. You can hear it in the lo-fi beats and high-pitched vocal samples of ‘Dunggu’ and in the complex, understated ambient track ‘Ja Matane’ and in the freestyle jazz piano in ‘Oh, That’s Good’. But Vassiloudis says writing ‘Year Of The Ox’ was a particularly freeing creative experience. “It came very naturally, and I wrote it in this flow state of pure creation.”

Vassiloudis asks for one thing from his listeners – their pure, undivided attention.

“This kind of music can be put under the umbrella of chill-out. Which basically pushes it into this category of background music. But I hope people can get past that and really listen, and let it jog their imaginations.” Stelios Vassiloudis
