In 2019, Reflections gave a name to a hugely successful downtempo compilation series on Anjunadeep. With the launch of the imprint, the second release kickstarts a new various artists EP series, welcoming a new era of talent to the Anjunafamily across the ambient, downtempo and alternative music spectrum, starting with ‘Reflections 01’.

‘Reflections 01’ features six stunning original compositions from Moldovan producer Michael FK, six piece collective Northling, British producer Sleep Surgeon, audiovisual artist Lyndsie Alguire, Montréal producer Lost In City and Leeds based composer Jessie Marcella.

Belgian producer Compuphonic marks his Reflections debut with a pair of elegant instrumental productions, ‘Aquamarine / Fairfax’. A familiar face on sister imprint Anjunadeep since joining the label family back in 2017, Compuphonic has also released on popular imprints Exploited, Get Physical and Turbo.

A trained cellist, Compuphonic draws on the tenets of classical composition and minimalist sounds within ‘Aquamarine / Fairfax’, fusing organic elements with downtempo electronic production. 

His unique hybrid sound has seen him supported by BBC Radio 1, 6 Music and KCRW and led to over 20 million streams across his catalogue to date. 

‘Aquamarine / Fairfax’ is the sixth release on Above & Beyond’s newly launched downtempo imprint Reflections.

Making their label debut earlier this year on ‘Reflections 01’ with ‘Winter’s Song’, six piece British band Northling return to the Reflections family for their first solo release with new single ‘Damselfly’; the lead track from their upcoming EP ‘Tycho’, due September 2022.

Starting as an improvisational band in 2017, Northling quickly developed their distinctive sound, drawing on their wide range of musical influences, from electronica to nu-jazz; earning them recognition from the likes of BBC Radio 1, 6 Music and BBC Introducing.

Layering delicate vocals alongside intricate piano melodies and soaring dynamics, Northling show off their impressive live instrumentation and flair for emotive songwriting on new single ‘Damselfly’.

Northling have the rare and desirable problem of having too many good ideas. The six-strong collective from Lytham St Annes in Lancashire are the first band to release on Anjuna’s low-tempo Reflections imprint; one listen to their dreamy, ethereal 'Tycho' EP and it’s easy to see why.

Northling formed as a jazz-inspired improvisational band in 2017, and soon caught the attention of the Arts Council England who tasked them with writing an album. This resulted in their 2019 debut EP ‘Blue', which garnered support from BBC Introducing and marked the evolution of Northling from jazz-fusion to cinematic electronica.

Various members have been friends since school, which creates an ecosystem of inspiration in the studio. They come up with so many ideas that they spend their time out of the studio happily debating which ones to pursue. 'Tycho' is the band’s second EP, and involved plenty of good-spirited debates to land on the final product. Following singles ‘Damselfly’ and ‘Fawkes’ and ‘Reflections 02’ track ‘Winter’s Song’, Northling share two new songs to complete the package with ‘Run Run’ and title track ‘Tycho’.

Northling’s music is romantic in a Wuthering Heights kind of way. It’s informed by the vast, volatile landscapes of Lancashire and its coastline, lakes and national parks where all four seasons play out within an hour. Northling’s productions reflect this variety, gliding from melancholic to euphoric, dark to light, desolate to celebratory.

If their music seems indefinable, that’s because it is. The band come from a wide range of musical backgrounds, from electronic to jazz to blues to soul, and the result is a melting point of sounds and influences as powerful and diverse as the northern landscape they’re inspired by.

Leeds based composer Jessie Marcella presents her second solo EP release on Reflections with ‘Untitled Pt. 2’.

Jessie joined our label family this summer with ‘Untitled’. The 4-track EP garnered support from Sian Eleri on BBC Radio 1 and showcased Marcella’s ability to compose music that uplifts and subdues at the same time. Her new EP ‘Untitled Pt. 2’ is a continuation of this project, with 4 more ambient compositions to sink into.

Jessie’s always been drawn to deep, emotive soundscapes. She’s classically trained in the clarinet, and found early inspiration in her work from the likes of Sigur Rós and Ralph Vaughan Williams. Much of Marcella’s inspiration for this EP comes from nature, growing up in Devizes, Wiltshire, a small, peaceful market town not far from Bristol.

It’s easy to over-think when writing ambient music, so Jessie always aims to keep it simple. Marcella describes her music-making process as a series of happy accidents. She’ll write a melancholy melody on her home studio keyboard and use a range of plug-ins to extend, deconstruct and distort. She created ‘Untitled Pt.2’ in Ableton Live, favouring piano, strings and subtle percussion alongside her own stretched-out vocals.

‘Untitled 05’, for example, was originally meant as an interlude, and began with a string melody. Marcella loved the rawness and depth, and added her own ghostly vocals to create a stripped-back and majestic introductory track. ‘Untitled 06’ sounds like a combination of a heartbeat and breathing, with light, bird-like flute adding sunshine to the composition, mirroring Marcella’s connection to the outdoors. ‘Untitled 07’ is a piano-leaning track with a reflective melody and wistful synths, and the only track of the EP with an audible beat. ‘Untitled 08’ was recorded with eight string players from Up North Orchestra, which is why it sounds so visceral.

Nothing has a title because Marcella wants her listeners to approach the EP with a clean mind and no pre-dispositions. “It’s like when you read a book before you’ve watched the film version, your imagination comes into play,” Marcella says. “That’s what I’m going for – I want people to just listen and feel and trust their own instincts.”

‘Untitled Pt.2’ is out now on Reflections.

Cephas Azariah is an Indian-born British composer and artist. Spending the past 5 years writing primarily for film and TV, Cephas has an impressive list of credits including composition work for PUMA, Soho House and Channel 4 as well as scores for award-winning short films including 'WRANGLER', a highlight of 2021's Cannes Film Festival.

Marking his debut solo release on Reflections, Cephas Azariah shares his new single 'Lunar Tides'; the lead single from his forthcoming EP of the same name. Inspired by the likes of Ólafur Arnalds and Tony Anderson, Cephas' compositions are a delicate blend of classical notes, electronic phrases and string embellishments. Self-coined ‘music for contemplation', Cephas' brand of ambient music has the sole intention of bringing peace and serenity to the listener's space.

Indian-born, British composer Cephas Azariah presents his debut EP on Reflections ‘Lunar Tides’. A four-track EP that explores themes of healing, isolation and connection.

Cephas has Synesthesia, a perceptual superpower that means he sees visuals when he hears music; so after he finished studying music at Middlesex University, he started composing soundtracks for film right away. Since 2016 he’s worked with PUMA, Soho House and Chanel and scored dozens of films. 

Before working on his EP, Cephas experienced bouts of insomnia but one particular encounter felt different. Combining his creativity with the power of nature, he was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, crafting the entire project under moonlight. 

“There was a series of really big moons last year, and I used to watch them,” Azariah says. “And it was really peaceful and still and calm, but I was in turmoil because I wasn't able to sleep. There was an exchange happening between nature and myself and i started playing around with sounds and trying to translate what was going on, and bring that chaos and peace together.”


By the time Azariah finished the project, he was able to sleep soundly again. “I am so grateful I had music during that period,” he says. “Music has a healing effect on me, and I hope it brings a sense of peace to everyone who listens.”
