Ryan Davis shares the second single from his upcoming twelve-track album 'Through The Mirror Glass’. ‘Waialeale’ is out now on Reflections.

Inspired by the movies he grew up watching with soundtracks by James Horner, Thomas Newman and Jóhann Jóhannsson, 'Through The Mirror Glass’ is Ryan's first full-length foray into cinematic electronic music.

The album’s second single, ‘Waialeale’, takes inspiration and samples from an island on Hawaii. Its micro-climate means clouds get stuck between the volcanoes and mountains, creating the most humid place on earth. As the track opens, you can hear the island breathing, and the tinkering piano and spaced out synths are an extension of the magic the island holds.

Ryan Davis teamed up with Anjunadeep for the first time in 2016 with a series of EPs showcasing the melodic, down-tempo side to his artistry. He’d long wanted to create a full-length project for Anjuna, so when Above & Beyond launched Reflections in 2022, Davis knew he’d found the perfect home for his next album. “With electronic music I have access to a never-ending palette of sounds,” Davis says. “This album has been inside me for ages, but computers just weren’t good enough. I didn’t know how to arrange notes to create an orchestra or to record a violin, but now Spitfire Audio has built these incredible samples. I have BBC One’s orchestra at my fingertips.”

Ultimately, Ryan Davis hopes 'Through The Mirror Glass' will act as a sonic space to reflect and hold fragile memories.

Indian-born, British composer Cephas Azariah presents his debut EP on Reflections ‘Lunar Tides’. A four-track EP that explores themes of healing, isolation and connection.

Cephas has Synesthesia, a perceptual superpower that means he sees visuals when he hears music; so after he finished studying music at Middlesex University, he started composing soundtracks for film right away. Since 2016 he’s worked with PUMA, Soho House and Chanel and scored dozens of films. 

Before working on his EP, Cephas experienced bouts of insomnia but one particular encounter felt different. Combining his creativity with the power of nature, he was able to see the light at the end of the tunnel, crafting the entire project under moonlight. 

“There was a series of really big moons last year, and I used to watch them,” Azariah says. “And it was really peaceful and still and calm, but I was in turmoil because I wasn't able to sleep. There was an exchange happening between nature and myself and i started playing around with sounds and trying to translate what was going on, and bring that chaos and peace together.”


By the time Azariah finished the project, he was able to sleep soundly again. “I am so grateful I had music during that period,” he says. “Music has a healing effect on me, and I hope it brings a sense of peace to everyone who listens.”

Mark Barrott presents the second single from his upcoming soundtrack album 'Jōhatsu (蒸発)', double a-side 'Icarus (イカロス) / One Friday In September (9月のある金曜日)', out now.

Mark Barrott is an artist that creatively speaking, never stops moving. His musical career has taken many forms. Some know him as Future Loop Foundation, the alias he used to create and perform ambient drum and bass from the mid-90s. Some know him for his Sketches from an Island albums, which he released under his own name, and others know him as the founder of the highly influential International Feel label, a label that spearheaded the bespoke vinyl movement of the 2010’s and brought DJ Harvey out of studio retirement. Barrott has spent close to four decades exploring new sonic territory and pushing the boundaries of various genres and is considered a pivotal figure in the revival of the Balearic music scene of the last decade.

Barrott’s new album, ’Jōhatsu (蒸発)’, is predictably unpredictable. Due for release this April on Above & Beyond’s new downtempo imprint Reflections, the album is a full departure from anything Mark has written before, partly because he was writing to moving picture. In 2019, Mark was commissioned by a director to write the score for their new documentary, ‘Jōhatsu (蒸発) ... the art of Evaporation’.

‘Jōhatsu (蒸発)’ is an 8-track journey through the sounds, sights, smells and sensations of traditional and contemporary Japanese culture.

Every year, it is estimated that as many as 100,000 people in Japan vanish, without a trace. These are the so-called johatsu. The “evaporated people”. People become jōhatsu for many different reasons including addiction, divorce and job loss. While some people may consider taking their own lives, others simply… evaporate. Jōhatsu refers to these people who purposefully leave the lives they knew behind.

‘Jōhatsu... the art of Evaporation’, shadowed a Japanese man as he went through this exact process, paying a contractor to help him vanish, moving from central Kyoto to Scandinavia. Scene notes from the director and shots of Kyoto at night-time, rural Japan, and Scandinavian forest-scapes informed Barrott’s musical direction for the project.

The tracks on this album are the ‘full’ pieces - those written for the longer sequences of film. The first single and opening track from the album, 'Kyoto (京都)', utilises the art of simplicity. It’s stripped back and minimal, allowing Barrott’s ambient, spontaneous production style to shine through.

Every track on the album started with improvisation, which meant some productions were written in the space of an afternoon. That’s how 'Icarus (イカロス)' came to be. It was written, or channelled, on the fly and came out almost too easily. 'One Friday in September (9月のある金曜日)' was created entirely with piano and field recordings. There’s melancholy in its simplicity and the track is inspired by the experience of finding something you didn’t know you’d lost and then having it ripped away again too soon.

'Jōhatsu (蒸発)' is out 17th April on Reflections. The second single 'Icarus (イカロス) / One Friday In September (9月のある金曜日)' is out now.

Mark approached the whole album much like a Japanese calligrapher. He prepared the room, the paper, the brushes and the ink to make the actual act of creating as spontaneous and unencumbered as possible. Inspired by the art of minimalism and Zen, with this album he wanted to create space and simplicity while allowing room for spontaneity.

You can hear this ethos across much of the album, particularly in the piano-led tracks like 'Shinrin-yoku (森林浴)', which is Japanese for forest-bathing. The track is minimalism personified, with field recordings of rain on leaves painting an aural picture reflective of the title.

Ryan’s latest album ‘Through The Mirror Glass’ has existed in idea-form for a very long time – most of his life, in fact. The album is inspired by the movies he grew up watching with soundtracks by James Horner, Thomas Newman and Jóhann Jóhannsson, and the tropes and rhythms of electronic music. Davis has wanted to connect the two ever since he started producing, so this 12-track album is his first full-length foray into cinematic electronic music.

Inviting a new wave of ambient and downtempo talent to the Reflections roster, this is the fifth instalment of the label’s various artist EP series, ‘Reflections 05’.

Opening the EP, we welcome back Ryan Davis with a stellar ambient rework of his 2016 Anjunadeep classic ‘Brun’. Ryan lands back on Reflections following the release of his December 2022 orchestral album ‘Through The Mirror Glass’, which saw support from SiriusXM, BBC Radio 1 and totals more than 600,000 streams to date.

Next up, Cologne-based live electronic act Alex Hövelmann makes his debut on Reflections with ‘Evermore’. Alex turns in an expertly layered evolving track, melding together field recordings and his own live instrumentation.

Returning to the EP series for a second time is ambient producer Michael FK, who presents a delicately woven production of humming synths and light piano motifs with ‘Indrawn’. Michael made his label debut on 'Reflections 01' with ‘Ashes’; a favourite from the 2022 edition of Anjunadeep’s prolific compilation series ‘Anjunadeep 13’. 

Rounding off 'Reflections 05' are newcomers taennya and Endlesstrains with a pair of ethereal mixes of their new collaboration ‘early rise’; the original mix is accompanied by a dream-like ambient instrumental.

Introducing ‘Reflections Revisited’. Reflections’ new various artists single series dives deep into the Anjuna archives, unearthing some of the most loved moments throughout Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep’s 20 year history, but with a twist. ‘Reflections Revisited’ presents a new series of downtempo and ambient compositions, where label legends and a host of new and emerging acts alike offer up chillout remixes and covers of Anjuna catalogue classics.

Launching the series is Indian-born British composer Cephas Azariah who delivers a stunning cinematic rendition of Cubicolor’s piano piece ‘Machine Keys’, taken from their debut LP ‘Brainsugar’ on Anjunadeep.

Landing in 2016, the album was a cult success and described as “a startlingly accomplished debut” (DJ Mag), solidifying the trio’s presence in the electronic landscape. The album picked up widespread support from the likes of Resident Advisor, Clash and Mixmag and over 60 million streams, while LP highlight ‘Machine Keys’ totals over 10 million streams to date.

British composer and producer Cephas Azariah steps up, bringing his signature sound to the rework, perfectly capturing the delicacy of the original composition whilst intertwining orchestral soars with a subtle electronic beat. Since his first release on Reflections in October 2022, Cephas has amassed an impressive 2 million streams.
