As you are listening to this, the people in Gaza are listening to the sound of genocide as the terror state of Israel carpet bombs hospitals, mosques, schools, refugee camps and other clear cut civilian targets while the elected leaders of the western world watch in silence.

Let it be known that in November 2023 when this mix came out more than 11.000 Palestinians including more than 4500 children were slaughtered by the fascist Israeli regime in the live streamed attacks on Gaza. It’s back to the Norwegian woods with Mikkel Rev for Bassiani Podcast 259. Alongside Oprofessionel he moonlights as Omformer, and co-spearheads the Oslo-based UTE collective, famous for offering mystical forest raves, memorable club nights and their take-home recordings via digital/vinyl outlet UTE.REC (and sub-label Translusid). Trance is the main thrust, but an updated and savvy manifestation of it that’s more than suited to 2025, furnishing its breakneck rhythms with the experimental slant of its IDM and ambient forebears. It’s an elevated approach to a known genre, and perhaps at the bleeding edge of its future potential, keeping sound and woodland birthplace tethered crucial to its mission. As well as a number of EPs out on his homespun label, he’s apt to explore the fringes of his sound and export its singular voice across the map: intelligent trance with a strong emotional charge. This latest instalment keeps that promise with Mikkel on top form, an hour of cathartic beats recorded live at Bassiani: supernatural and stylish fare for sylvan nighttime gatherings.

Founding member of Axces Recordings and Danish DJ/producer Kasper Marott returns to the Bassiani airwaves with a Zenaari edition that studies a much more phrenic side of his musical world. Driven by instinct, his work reflects a single minded aversion to commercial orthodoxy and the regular grind of a 40 hour work week: it’s all about feeling and a passion for creating the sounds that have kept him and his Copenhagen crew together, ‘nature, friends, family, home’. Forget the springy beats and dulcet melodies this time round, here is something entirely different and new. In stark contrast to his catalogue of jovial anthems, the likes of breakthrough hit Keflavik and 2021’s Mini Trance, Kasper’s inward-looking work slows those rhythms right down and investigates the possibilities of a sound much more restricted in palette. It’s a surprising turnaround for someone whose name evokes the breezy basslines of open-air jaunts, one packed with vibrating synths, understated instrumentals, and the electronic crackling of a wood fire on a balmy summer night. Zenaari Mix 018 is Kasper Marott like you’ve never heard him before, far from the dancefloor and burdening constraints of a rave context, Zenaari gives his inner world a voice, and the result is a rich, human and deep-toned 67 minute cut recorded in studio for this latest in the series.
