Formerly a Kuduru singer in Angola, PITSHU met  Jimmy the Dancer in a shelter in downtown São Paulo. Took by the dancer to a Dubversão session in the Sarajevo club when Bigode was selecting (usually Yellow P played those wednesdays), Pitshu quickly became the sound’s official deejay (sound system MC), setting the tone in the dances with his delicate chants being the perfect match to the set’s powerfull, bass driven rumble.
By 2008, when Basodá was released, the weekly party Java (every friday night up to 500 people showed up) and Dubversão’s free street dances had already estabilshed a large following an the love for sound system culture in Brazil, speacially São Paulo, the sound’s hometown.
Most of the riddims on the album were taken from Rockers Control’s sessions at Coacho do Sapo studio, in Bahia, which also resulted in the Jacuípe Sessions álbum. The band is Dubversão’s in house riddim machine, and some of those riddims appeared later in Brother Culture’s showcase Chilling Inna Brazil and Massarock’s self titled debut solo.

Java developed from Susi in Dub, the first weekly friday party held by the Dubversão crew in 2002. Since those first gaherings the crew put a lot of effort into becoming a real reggae sound system, and by 2008 the stacks were already fully blasting the bass line with scoops, a Tubby’s preamp, and a nice vibe, every time.
The sound design was supervised by legendary engeneer Wagner “Wagnão” Tavares, who started to learn his craft while living with the rock band Mutantes in São Paulo country side in the 70’s, later working wih Gilberto Gil, Tim Maia and many of Great brazilian artits.

We had the pleasure to live in Brazil 11 years ago and it’s so good to see how the culture and evolved and grown in to such a big movement full of sound systems, selectors, singers, mc’s, pre-amp builders and now even a soundsystem ran just by women! Feminine Hi-Fi, hope to see similar project in Europe soon.

a vibrant instrumental version by Addis Pablo, who plays his melodica in the tradition of his legendary father Augustus Pablo. It was during his stay in Sion, Switzerland, that Addis Pablo shared moments of pure positive vibrations with the musicians of The Giants, both on stage and in the studio. Together they recorded an exclusive melodica cut on the reworked 1980’s roots riddim. The Giants increased the tempo and made it a riddim which glows when you listen to it, picking up in power as it progresses along the way. It’s top notch musicianship with Addis Pablo delivering a melancholic, deep and captivating melodica version. On the B side the listener is treated to the organic oldskool of “Jah Faya Dub”, with Yves Duke’s kete play and David Duke’s percussion work playing a prominent role in the mix.

This is another impromptu Sunday afternoon session at my house, pre super bowl style! Recorded live in one take with one turntable. All tunes are original pressings except possibly the last tune, which has a bit of a sketchy history but still sounds brilliant, and is ever appropriate for the times we are living! With a new year upon us, it gives us a chance to reflect on the year that has just passed. It was a tuff year for me and many of my friends! This selection reflects the trials and tribulations that I and many of us have been through this year. You can check the playlist but this one full of ultra heavy, dark roots music from beginning to end. Giving thanks for the strength that this music provides us!!! Again no planning, just throw down the first tune and vibe from there.  This one is about an hour and a half or so of pure vibes!! Check it out, as they say all killers, no fillers!!
