Local Action is very proud to present Rushing 1621, the first EP from a transatlantic meeting of minds and styles from two of our favourite artists: Om Unit and James Bangura. 

Based in Bristol, Om Unit is a titan of UK soundsystem music, pulling footwork, hip-hop, jungle, bass, techno, breaks and more into wild new shapes across an illustrious 15-year plus career.

DC’s James Bangura meanwhile has emerged as one of the most exciting artists on America’s east coast, releasing solo heat on labels like Incienso and !K7 and regularly touring the world as part of the Black Rave Culture collective, drawing from regional club styles across the States. 

The EP’s title Rushing 1621 is a reference to both artists’ area codes, so UK-meets-US synergy is the name of the game here (and if you know Local Action, you probably already know that this sort of thing is our catnip). Garage, house, breaks and even moments that recall early ‘00s proto-dubstep and dub-techno are all present, but really, it’s both artists’ immaculate drums and flawless production that drives this thing. Some records just feel unimpeachable, and this is one.

Om Unit & James Bangura - Ruffneck

Originally from Bengal, raised in Kuwait, and finally settling in British Columbia in 2010, Omi has spent well over a decade immersing himself in and contributing to BC’s music scene. His diverse background in psychology, videography, event production, and more recently cybersecurity, has endowed him with a unique perspective on underground and mainstream bass music and its culture(s). His platform, Safe as Fuck, long served (and continues to) as a beacon for authentic underground music enthusiasts, drawing crowds from across the interior of British Columbia and Vancouver. It provided a nurturing environment for emerging artists to explore the sounds of Jungle, Footwork, Grime, Garage, UK dubstep, Hip-Hop, and West Coast bass until the global Covid hiatus. Through his eclectic blend of influences he has carved out a space where creativity thrives and community flourishes.

Over the course of the pandemic, Omi has produced solo and collaborative EPs like the “Legwork EP”, 'Bao EP' and 'The Alta Vista EP,' the latter with his comrade Zane Commerford under the moniker OZ. (pronounced ounce). One track, titled 'Lights,' even found its way as a closing gem in DJ Ayyden’s HÖR Berlin set, highlighting his burgeoning influence. Watch out for the imminent release of Safe as Fuck Label’s Second compilation album + the many singles him and his close friends have been sitting on for years.
