The compositional idea of the string quartet ‘’Mundus invisibilis’’ (The Invisible World) was conceived by observing the various forms of fungal mycelium and translating the spatial image of its branched underground network into time. The nuclei of fungal cells which move freely through the whole mycelium appear in this composition as pulses or pulse structures of various types and lengths. From them, a number of audible macrostructures or bodies of sound are born that one can imagine as fungi themselves. The electronic track consists mainly of percussive impulses of damped strings and their reverberations in the piano body. 
The 18th century botanist Carl Linnaeus called the world of microorganisms invisible to the human eye, including fungi and their spores, ‘’Mundus invisibilis’’. Before him, ‘’Mundus invisibilis’’ described the intangible, evasive realm inhabited by souls and spirits. In my worldview, there is a similarity and connection between the two, which I explore in this piece. It may well be that the world of spirits is interwoven and connected by threads even finer than those of the already elusive mycelium network.

Hēsihija (ΗΣΥΧΙΑ) is a windless calm sea. In his poetic dialogue with the deity known in Western tradition as 'Nature,' Parmenides suggests that the mind must attain a similarly tranquil state in order to engage in a dialogue with truth and steer away from the path of many deceptive opinions. On the path to truth, the deity reveals the existing, which neither was nor will be but simply is. This composition draws inspiration from some of Parmenides' preserved verses. To capture the uniqueness of his thoughts, ancient Greek language is used in the chants.

The composition is inspired by the "Voynich manuscript," often referred to as one of the world's most mysterious books. Created around the 15th or 16th century, it is a still undeciphered "text" approximately 213 pages long, accompanied by strange diagrams and illustrations. The manuscript gained wider recognition in the last century when it was accidentally discovered in 1912 at a Jesuit college near Rome by a book dealer named Wilfrid M. Voynich, after whom the work is named. Many cryptographers, codebreakers, and linguists have attempted to decipher the Voynich manuscript, but the incomprehensible cipher, along with the peculiar illustrations of plants, symbols, and people, remains unexplained. As of now, it is not known whether the textual part of the Voynich manuscript encodes an unknown language or consists of a series of visual signs. Research is still ongoing, and the text is currently held by Yale University. To reflect the strange nature of this story, the language heard in the composition is invented by the composer.

A contemporary opera that explores forest as a natural stage to create unique experience of our interconnectedness with nature at large and forest in particular.
“Tree Opera. Windthrow” is an immersive musical experience that takes place in a forest or park, where forest itself becomes a protagonist in its own right. It draws the inspiration from the most recent scientific research in plants neuro-physiology and deep forest ecology showing that trees share information and nutrients through a subterranean network of fungi. Instead of seeing trees as separate agents competing for resources, it perceives forest as a wood wide web – a cooperative, deeply symbiotic system where trees communicate among themselves and with other species, producing a collaborative intelligence or ‘forest wisdom’. it tells a story where the main characters – Root, Trunk, Branches, Leaves and Fungi Choir – undergo the cycle of creation and death, leading to the recognition of life as an uninterrupted, continuous process.
The libretto is performed in Latin to give a hint both to once common language of science and mediaeval mysteries.

/Tree Opera. Windthrow/ for eight voices, chamber ensemble and electronic track 2019

Anna is a Latvian composer working in the areas of chamber music, opera, music for choir, instrumental solo pieces and electroacoustic musi. Fascinated by the most intricate properties of sound, she approaches it as a live organism that embodies a musical form in itself. Her work is often created in close collaboration with musicians, exploring the finest timbral, textural and technical possibilities of each instrument that eventually lead to meticulously designed sonoric architectures. Inspired by the mysteries of nature, she steps with it into a conversation through her music, colliding disciplined rationality and scientific research with feminine intuition and sensitive plasticity.
In 2019 her Tree Opera. Windthrow for eight voices, chamber ensemble and electronic track was premiered in Finland by the Grammy Award winning Latvia Radio Choir, chamber ensemble and Swedish Paetzold contrabass recorder player Anna Petrini. Anna is currently working on a composition for symphonic orchestra and large choir Carmen Sibyllae (Song of the Sibyl), based on Virgil’s 4th Eclogue, anticipated premiere in 2021.
