They’ll say happy birthday if you say it to them first
They’re gonna write a song but they can’t write a second verse
They like you ‘cause you’re smart but they can’t handle your remarks 
They’ll drown out your opinions ‘cause they’re a stubborn arse

They’ll insist that you look rough when you were having a nice time
And they won’t believe you when you say you’re doing fine
‘Cause they think they know everything, they learnt it in a year
And they like to tell you this, they’ll shout it in your ear

That’s when we realise
That these are other people’s stories
And we have to try and try
To read our own and learn how to ignore these

They’ll cut in with their judgement and then answer their own questions
And this is all before you reach the end of your sentence
They try to sweep you off your feet with their sweeping statements
But you’re only blown away by just how much you hate them

They’ll spend their whole life trying to be someone else 
And they’ll avoid you cos you know their true self
They’ll always pass the blame on when they do something wrong
But don’t know why old flames and their friends have all gone

That’s when we realise
That these are other people’s stories
And we have to try and try
To read our own and learn how to ignore these

They thought they would have won by now and achieved their twisted dreams
So they struggle with reality ‘cause it’s not as it seemed
I hope one day they’ll look out from the window of their bubble
But they might hear this song and i might get into trouble

That’s when we realise
That these are other people’s stories

Other People's Stories

Monday morning, same old scene
He never strays from his routine
Holding back from a new start
Something guards his hollow heart
She’s walking down the street with her headphones in
her own world, she’s not listening
Only has eyes for her coffee mission
Can’t look up to see what she’s missing

He leaves the counter, rushing off to work
A happy face brushing off the hurt
And she likes to hide under winter coats
And she likes to hide what hurt the most
And they both like to think they’re brave
Yet connection’s what they crave
But they don’t know who to talk to
‘Cause they’re not sure who’d want to

The smell of coffee, morning laughter
The morning rush but moments after
She’s still standing in her hallway
Grabs her keys, she’s late as always
He slept in, he’s still at home
He really hates waking up alone
Runs to reach the cafe door
Never been this tired before

And hands brush, and smiles are made
And shoulders touch and apologies exchanged
It’s not much but it’s a start
To a story for two patched up hearts

Today she glances at the time   
She’s had to wait a while outside
She’s never normally this early
Especially on a Thursday
Today he’s sitting in his car
Wondering if he’s gone too far
He thought she normally walked this way
Especially on a Wednesday

Suddenly it’s getting colder
Muddy footprints on the floor
Droplets forming into puddles 
Families all forming huddles
She runs in, he holds the door
He’s never done that for her before
Who knew shelter from the weather
Would finally bring them together?

And hands brush and smiles are made
And shoulders touch and apologies exchanged 
Something changes in the air
Is it new or was it always there?
The sight would melt the snow away
Watch them both sit and chat away the day
To see their eyes find something new 
And see the world with a different view

Coffee Shop Meeting

There's a lot to be said about the world from the state of the streets
Theres a lot to be learnt about the world from the people you meet
So if you follow the tarmac rivers
They might just show you where to go
What's for you won’t go by you
Just keep looking out the window

September air, another page
Different city, same old rain
So when the world seems to turn its back on you
And no one’s answering their phones

You’re always gonna meet those who get right on your nerves
You have to learn to push back and recognise your worth
The only one who saves you is gonna have to be yourself
But a problem shared is cut in half and that just might help

Two lonely souls begin to lift their worldview from the ground
There's a queue outside the coffee shop cos its pissing it down
