« Parlez-vous Drari ? » questionne le mot DRARi, les étiquettes maladroites ou discriminantes qui peuvent être mises sur les jeunes des quartier populaires, qui se revendiquent ou non être des « Draris ».

“In Between” questions and re-imagines the relationship between private and public, looking for intermediate acoustic spaces.
What happens when the surfaces of liminal spaces such as doors and windows become invisible, converting into sound? 

Once recorded Sporobole art center’s doors and windows (fissures, hinges, surfaces) with different microphones and techniques to capture a combination of both recognizable and abstracts sounds, those sounds have been composed alongside the use of silence, working on the idea of the limen as the limit of the difference between private and public and silence as acoustic space in which the concepts of private and public inhabit simultaneously.

In between Marseille and Naples, and navigating through the Mediterranean . One is the city in which I was born; the other is the one that has adopted me.
“La vie en bleu” is an intimate immersion into two realities where the main element is still the sea. The sea that cleanses, that purifies, that represents a form of catharsis because you can immerse yourself and forget what’s left outside. In both cities, the sea filtrates reality, and this is also what water does in this radio piece. The intimate perspective becomes an aquatic trip.
Field recordings and hydrophonic recordings in a soundscape composition in which blue is the dominant color. Blue as the sea, blue as the colors of both Naples and Marseille’s football teams…

I am Italian, I have lived in Spain and now I am living in France. My brain challenges the oral communication and my body tries to help me when with the words I couldn’t make it. I make radio and i realize radio programs for Spain, Italy, France and Morocco.

All this makes that I am obsessed with forms of translation; I don’t mean just the oral one. I mean translation as a possibility of mutual understanding, translation as a way to take something from a context to another.

I have made of this matter a radio performance on the forms of translations (verbal and not) as final point of a research on the field, in which a public of listeners are performers. An interactive radio show made by words, silences, soundscapes and music are part of this attempt to create a liquid communication moment over languages.

Play Babel #1 was realized with the precious collaboration of the artist Younes Baba-Ali, for Media Sculpture Projet, organized by Radio Orange, Wien.

Play Babel est une traversée sonore dans le quartier Bosnie de Saint-Gilles, proposée par Anna Raimondo dans le cadre du projet “Parlez-vous Saint-Gillois?” produit par Constant vzw.

A partir de la récolte de mots intraduisibles, une soupe de faux amis, traductions linguistiques et improbables, une salade d’accents provenant d’horizons différents, “Play Babel” est une exploration du quartier et de ses langues proposée par les voix des habitants, sous forme d’une balade sonore.

Anniek Schalij (1993, She/Her They/Them) est une économiste Queerfemme et une artiste à temps partiel qui vit et travaille à Bruxelles. Elle est passionnée par la couleur, la lumière et aime incorporer ces concepts dans des gribouillis, des dessins, des peintures et des performances.

Agathe Yamina : Je suis une artiste performeuse et chorégraphe. Actuellement, je suis principalement dramaturge spécialisée dans les questions de genre et les enjeux queers avec le collectif La Gang pour leur projet « Meduse.s » . Je cherche à intégrer mon parcours personnel de déconstruction politique à mes différentes disciplines artistiques.

[NL] “Bij deze bushalte ontmoette ik een jeugdvriend die nu crack rookt. Wat doen we met mensen die net buiten de norm vallen? Wat kunnen we samen doen voor hen?”

Agathe Yamina: Ik ben performer en choreograaf. Momenteel ben ik vooral dramaturge gespecialiseerd in gender en queer issues met het collectief La Gang voor hun project “Meduse.s”. Gaia est une travailleuse de l’art. Accompagne et facilite la réalisation des œuvres en art contemporain ainsi que leur exposition. 

[NL] “Grondwetplein: een parking en daaronder een gat, te vol, te leeg. En boven ook een leegte: een leegte van betekenis. Maar daar bovenop, het gebouw Lemonnier, als een boemerang, een baken. Je kijkt ernaar, het kijkt naar jou. Dit gebouw verwelkomt je.”

Gaia is cultuurwerker. Begeleidt en faciliteert de productie en tentoonstelling van hedendaagse kunstwerken.

Laura Nsengiyumva [FR] 14’19’’

[FR] « Tu te trouves devant une statue. Les matériaux ont été extrait dans les mines du Haut Katanga par des esclaves. Cette statue célèbre la personne qui a pensé cet esclavagisme. Quand j’ai eu la vision de faire fondre cette statue, c’était dans l’idée d’en faire un espace urbain pour se rassembler et protester, s’il le faut. »

Laura Nsengiyumva  est une artiviste, architecte et chercheuse bruxelloise. À travers sa pratique interdisciplinaire, Nsengiyumva explore des thèmes tels que l'expérience diasporique, les histoires cachées, les relations Nord-Sud et l'empathie. Elle parle de ces sujets à travers des images et des interventions sur des espaces coloniaux. Ses actions artivistes comme PeoPL (la fonte d'une statue de Léopold II) et Queen Nikkolah, font partie de son projet de recherche "Shaping the presence of the African diaspora in Belgium". Sa vision transculturelle de l'histoire est basée sur des histoires humaines qui nous invitent à trouver ce qui nous rassemble.
Nsengiyumva est affiliée en tant que chercheur artistique à Kask, à l'école des arts de HOGENT et à howest. Elle a remporté le premier prix au Kunstsalon de Gand en 2011, et le deuxième prix à la Biennale de Dakar en 2012.

[NL] “Je staat voor een standbeeld. De materialen werden door slaven uit de mijnen van Opper-Katanga gehaald. Dit standbeeld viert de persoon die deze slavernij bedacht heeft. Toen ik het inzicht kreeg om dit standbeeld te doen smelten, was dat met het idee om er een stedelijke ruimte van te maken waar mensen kunnen samen komen en protesteren wanneer nodig.”

Laura Nsengiyumva (zij/zij) is een in Brussel gevestigde kunstenaar, architect en onderzoeker. Via haar interdisciplinaire praktijk onderzoekt Nsengiyumva thema's als diasporische ervaring, verborgen geschiedenissen, Noord-Zuidrelaties en empathie. Ze spreekt over deze onderwerpen door middel van beelden en interventies in koloniale ruimtes. Haar artivistische acties zoals PeoPL (het smelten van een standbeeld van Leopold II) en Koningin Nikkolah, maken deel uit van haar onderzoeksproject “Shaping the presence of the African diaspora in Belgium”. [FR] « L'école est un lieu de passage. Ces escaliers aussi et j'aime les lieux de passage. Je me sens légitime de m'asseoir ici, je me suis imprégné dans ces marches, c'est un point de vue pour regarder les personnes et leur dire bonjour. »

L.K est un travailleureuse Trans* disciplinaire de l'image. Il utilise la photographie et la video pour archiver son quotidien et ses communautés. Depuis 2 ans il travaille sur un projet d'archives concernant les personnes Trans*, intersexe, non binaire, au genre non conforme en Belgique.

[NL] “De school is een doorgangsplek. Deze trappen zijn dat ook en ik houd van doorgangsplekken. Ik voel me gelegitimeerd om hier te zitten, ik ben vervlochten met de treden, het is een uitkijkpunt van waaruit ik naar mensen kan kijken en hen hallo kan zeggen.”

L.K is een trans*disciplinaire beeldbewerker. Hij gebruikt fotografie en video om zijn dagelijks leven en gemeenschap te archiveren. De afgelopen twee jaar werkte hij aan een archiefproject over trans*, intersekse, non-binaire en gender non-conforme mensen in België.

[EN] “School is a place of passage. So are these stairs and I love places of passage. I feel legitimate sitting here, I've soaked myself into these steps, it's a viewpoint to look at people and say hello.”

LK is a Trans* disciplinary image worker. He uses photography and video to archive his daily life and his communities. For the past 2 years, he has been working on an archive project about trans*, intersex, non-binary and gender non-conforming people in Belgium.

[FR] « En vieillissant, je deviens de plus en plus invisible et asexuelle, ou bien hétérosexuelle. Les normes viennent me confronter de manière encore plus féroce et je ne m’attendais pas du tout à cela. Je savais que j’allais être discriminée face à un monde qui tourne autour de la jeunesse. C’est ça l'âgisme. »

Marian Lens est sociologue et active depuis la fin des années 1970 dans les mouvements lesbien, féministe et rainbow, et spécialisée dans leur histoire. Elle a (co-)fondé e.a. Artemys, la RainbowHouse et L-Tour.

[NL] “Door te verouderen word ik onzichtbaar en word ik aseksueel of heterosekueel. De normen dringen zich veel feller aan me op en dat had ik niet verwacht. Ik wist wel dat ik natuurlijk gediscrimineerd ging zijn in een wereld die vooral draait rond jongeren. En dat is het agisme.”
Sociologe Marian Lens is sinds eind jaren 1970 actief in de lesbische, feministische en regenboogbewegingen, en een specialiste in hun historisch onderzoek. Heeft o.a. Artemys, het Regenbooghuis en L-Tour (mede-)opgericht.

[EN] “By aging, I become more invisible and asexual. Or heterosexual. I am confronted more fiercely to social norms than I expected. I knew that I was going to be discriminated against in a world that revolves around young people. That's ageism.”

[FR] « L’espace public est ségrégué. Quelles statues avons-nous ? Nous, les femmes ? Nous, les personnes racisées ? Elle est où notre statue de Lumumba ? »

Aïda Yancy est une activiste queer, antiraciste et féministe basée à Bruxelles. Son travail et ses recherches l'amènent à se concentrer sur les questions d'intersectionnalité et d'espaces (aussi) Safe (que possible). Dans son temps libre, elle fabrique des choses et lit des livres écrits par des femmes et des personnes queer, noires et racisées.

[NL] “De openbare ruimte is gesegregeerd. Welke standbeelden hebben wij, vrouwen? Wij, personen van kleur? Waar is ons standbeeld van Lumumba?”

Aïda Yancy is een queer, antiracistische en feministische activiste uit Brussel. Door haar werk en onderzoek focust ze zich op kwesties van intersectionaliteit en (zo) Safe (mogelijke) spaces. In haar vrije tijd fabriceert ze dingen en leest ze boeken geschreven door queer, zwarte en geraciseerde vrouwen en personen.

Comment faire si moi je veux mettre une robe, du rouge à lèvres, me sentir belle et draguer des femmes avec de la musique afro-caribéenne ? Est-ce que j'en demande trop ? »

[NL] “Brussel is een stad die erg queer is, waar gemeenschappen en intersectionaliteiten vermengd zijn. Maar als lesbische vrouw van kleur miste ik een plek. Wat te doen als ik een jurk en lippenstift wil dragen, me mooi wil voelen en vrouwen wil versieren op Afro-Caribische muziek? Vraag ik te veel?”

[EN] “Brussels is a very queer city, mixing communities and intersectionalities. But as a racialised and lesbian woman, I was missing a place. What if I want to put on a dress, wear lipstick, feel beautiful and hit on women to Afro-Caribbean music? Am I asking for too much?”

[FR] « J’ai un sentiment de haine lorsque je viens ici, parce que ce lieu représente le contraire de moi : l’institution patriarcale, un grand monument oppressif. Je pense que pour les personnes queer c’est un acte très subversif de venir manifester ici. Avec nos corps queer, nos corps racisés... »

Ansao Totolehibe est un activiste, musicien et chercheur trans qui explore les dynamiques de mutualisation spatiale, d’accès aux espaces habités et de réseaux de care collectif au sein des communautés transgenres, queer antiracistes et issues de l'immigration à Bruxelles.
À la croisée du milieu académique, squat et de la scène musicale expérimentale ; il tisse des trajectoires entre territoires vécus, espaces de résistance et exutoires collectifs

[NL] “Ik voel veel woede wanneer ik hier kom, omdat deze plek het tegenovergestelde van mezelf vertegenwoordigt: het patriarchale instituut, het grote onderdrukkende monument. Ik denk dat het voor queer mensen een heel subversieve daad is om hier te demonstreren. Met onze queer lichamen, onze lichamen van kleur...”

Ansao Totolehibe is een transactivist, muzikant en onderzoeker die de dynamiek onderzoekt van ruimtelijke uitwisseling, toegang tot bewoonde ruimtes en collectieve zorgnetwerken binnen transgender-, queer-, antiracistische en immigrantengemeenschappen in Brussel.
Op het kruispunt van de academische wereld, de kraakscene en de experimentele muziekscene weeft hij trajecten tussen de plekken waar hij leefde, ruimtes van verzet en collectieve afzetmarkten.

[EN] “I have a feeling of hate when I go there, because it really represents the opposite of me: a patriarchal institution, a big oppressive monument. So I think for queer people it is very subversive to go there to protest. With our queer bodies, our racialised bodies...”

Ansao Totolehibe is a trans activist, musician and researcher who explores the dynamics of spatial mutualisation, access to inhabited spaces and collective care networks within transgender, queer, anti-racist and immigrant communities in Brussels.
At the crossroads of academia, squatting and the experimental music scene, he weaves trajectories between lived territories, spaces of resistance and collective outlets.

Après sa première édition à Rome en 2023, Polyphonie d’amour arrive à Bruxelles. La rencontre radiophonique initiée par Anna Raimondo guidée par les intuitions de bell hooks dans son livre « All About Love: New Visions » et inspirée par l'impact politique et éthique de la manière dont chaque personne définit et fait l'expérience de l’amour. Cette émission ouvre le micro et propose une improvisation à plusieurs voix et en plusieurs langues sur l’amour. Entre paroles et sons, collecte de témoignages à la première personne, musique et chansons, le contenu collecté est devenu un podcast (graphisme d’Antoine Lobstein). Grâce aux interventions de Vincen Beeckman et Shahin Mohammad, aux voix de Emma Dumartheray, Maite Smeyers,  Anamaria Pazmino et Christelle Tsilibaris. Having lived a nomadic life travelling, living and working around the world, Anna Raimondo reflects on her relationships with the different languages of her life: Italian, Spanish, French, and English. At the same time, she attends a phonetic course to learn how to speak with a British accent. Caught somewhere between ridicule and seriousness, hesitation and encouragement, Anna's exploration invites listeners into a sonic soup of lingue / idiomas / langues / languages.

A mermaid is a mystery
A mystery, which crosses different universes and registers
Half bird or half fish? 
Femmes fatales or a simple and innocent beautiful girl?
Prophet or destroyer?
Between the world of the dead and the living, anyway, she is a woman.
Becoming woman, waves, becoming mermaid, A Mermaid Is On Air is a sonic trip trough these universes, where the voice, the subjectivity and the process of the perception of listening are central to explore them.
Looking for a feminine communication, beyond logos, the work explores what being a woman could mean and imply.
And as a mysterious universe of the waves, the mermaid also embodies here the potential of electromagnetic waves in her possibility to cross the air, the water and the earth.
Playing on different levels, the work deconstructs the myth of the mermaid, mixing different legends and stereotypes about its figure. The mermaid becomes here an ironic and poetic way to approach what does “being woman” means beyond instructions to follow and stereotypes to fill. At the same time, this figure also activates the imaginary related to the sea as a horizon of possibility where to find the other and the self in continuous transformation.

Tout comme l’œil, l’oreille s’éduque. Notre perception des sons environnants s’aiguise à partir d’une série d’exercices ludiques. Un premier pas indispensable pour mieux écouter, et donner à écouter. Ensemble nous allons découvrir les possibilités creatives du langage radiophonique au-delà de ses formats habituels, tout en explorant comment à partir des mêmes ingrédients (son, parole, musique et silence), on peut démultiplier les formats, les langages et les intentions.
Nous allons alors apprendre les règles de la prise de son et du montage, les techniques de l’interview et l’abc du montage pour créer une carte postale de Bruxelles dans le future.
A partir des paysages sonores bruxellois d’aujourd’hui et des voix collectées, nous allons inventer les sons de demain pour en faire une carte postale qui vient du future...

Turboradiofiction: donne migranti e routine superpotenti

Lo scorso giugno l’artista Anna Raimondo  ha trascorso qualche settimana a Milano, nel distretto del Quadrilatero, un complesso di edilizia popolare oggi largamente abitato da persone e  famiglie migranti. Qui si intrecciano storie e biografie provenienti soprattutto dal Nord Africa, il sud est asiatico e l’Europa dell’est.
Grazie all’invito del collettivo artistico Landscape Coreography, Maddalena Fragnito ed Emanuele Braga, Anna Raimondo ha partecipato al progetto Radical Soundscape ed ha proposto un laboratorio di narrazione e creazione radiofonica ad un gruppo di donne migranti del quartiere.
In risonanza con le riflessioni attivate dal progetto a proposito del lavoro quotidiano di cura e assistenza tradizionalmente attribuito alle donne, a prescindere dalla loro origine, il laboratorio è partito da una serie di domande:  quali sono gli ostacoli di una donna migrante in una città come Milano e in un quartiere come S. Siro? Quali quelli più comuni alle donne, al di là delle loro origini? Esplorando la potenzialità della scrittura e del linguaggio radiofonico, dal rumorismo alla scrittura,  sono nate così le “turbo radio fictions: donne migranti e routine superpotenti”.
Turbo perché sono brevi, veloci, fulminanti. Radio perché è radio. Fiction perché sono tutte interamente pensate, scritte e recitate dalle donne che hanno preso parte al laboratorio,  partendo dal loro vissuto. In tutte le tre storie entrerà in scena una super eroina, paladina di giustizia ed uguaglianza, che ribalterà con ironia le loro routine.
Nel terzo ed ultimo episodio, “I vostri calcoli sono numeri ingiusti”, in onda venerdì 6 ottobre, Sanati ha richiesto il ricongiungimento di suo figlio dallo Sri Lanka ma il tecnico del catasto valuta che secondo la legge per il ricongiungimento le mancano 8 metri quadrati per avverare il suo sogno. Cosa succede quando la super eroina di oggi, Wasanaa, ascolta la frase “I vostri calcoli sono numeri ingiusti? “.

Anna Raimondo has collected memories and interpretations of the sea from people coming from diverse cultural and geographic backgrounds. Afterwards, she selected excerpts from these interviews and placed them in dialogue with Koranic and Biblical passages dealing with the presence of the sea. The result is a sonic composition based on a graphic score, in which both the registers of the spoken world and the opera converge. 

The score is conceived in three parts and performed by Edyta Jerzeb and Jérôome Porsperger. 
The first movement, Toward the sea, evokes perceptions and sensual relations; the second, Crossing the sea, evokes the dangers that it may represent; the third and final movement, Beyond the sea, proposes
visions and reflections about its symbolic end This work is a vocal journey between cultures, languages and multiple visions about the sea, intended as an element which is impossible to break and not intended to separate.

Derrière La Mer- 1ère Partie

A woman’s voice repeats “Mediterraneo...”.  The initially crystal-clear voice imperceptibly tires, chokes, finally drowns.   The vocal rhythm is obsessive, with its endless iteration of the same word: a mantra; the word, iterated like a string of scarcely dissimilar pearls, outlines a circular ordering, somewhat like the in-and-off waters trajectories. 
Far from being an individual echo, the voice articulating “mediterraneo” is a chorus generating space, manifesting the artist's impossibility to face this contemporary drama.

As part of her ongoing exploration of “gendered listening” as a feminist tool, Anna Raimondo interviews Brazilian sound artist, performer and composer Mariana Carvalho. In her practice, Carvalho uses her own body as a filter, as a musical tool that acts as a membrane between her internal perceptions and what she shares with a public. By referring particularly to he work Me alimento de voces in which she asks people to sing into her mouth, she deals with the possibility of feeding herself on voices and otherness (voces in Spanish means “voices”, você in Portuguese means “You”).

Comment écouter la relation entre espaces privés et publics de la Medina à Marrakech ?

Guidées par les oreilles et les voix de Latifa, Mina, Zahra, Meriem Saou’d, Amina, Rachida, Nadira, Khadija et Fatima, ce documentaire sonore propose une dérive auditive dans les ruelles de la Medina de Marrakech a partir d’une perspective genrée et plurielle.

En se concentrant sur l’approche orale et auditive, l’intention est de créer un chœur multiple de voix basé sur la narration personnelle de leurs perceptions, valeurs et expériences quotidiennes de la ville, en se concentrant également sur le paysage sonore public et ses propres rythmes, que ces femmes contribuent à composer.

Ce projet s’inscrit dans la recherche doctorale en Arts et Sciences de l’Art menée par l’artiste entre l’ARBA et l’ULB à Bruxelles : « Nouveaux genres d’écoute: voix, corps, silences et territoires ».

Anna Raimondo completed the MA Sound Arts at the London College of Communication (University of the Arts, London) and she is running a practice based PHD between Arba (Ecole des Beaux Arts) and ULB University in Brussels. She has won the Palma Ars Acustica 2016 with her radio work “Me, my English and all the languages of my life” and the price of best soundscape with “La vie en bleu” in the frame of the sound art competition PIARS and has won the prize of the city in the frame of the contemporary art prize Mediatine in 2018.
