Great Spotted Woodpecker drills Mars’s drum 
In a military tattoo, to marshall the bugs,
The soldier beetles and bark-gnawing weevils, 

Now Luna turns russet red in Earth’s umbra, 
A covenant of balmier days without number. 

Wyrm moon, Cold moon, Sap Moon
Pulling on the tides, rising 
And not just in the flooded rhynes, but 
Coursing up the loins of men too, 
Their reveries of love fine-tuned 
To Jack in the Green’s reciting 
To the tremolo thrill of Pan’s piping

Labyrinth Spider stands guard on the dell, 
While Salamanders ring the bluebells 
To peal out harsh winter’s fare-thee-well. 

Pixie-cup lichen arrives in the Vale, 
And elves riding turkeys with blue ruffled tails
Then ... Amanita Muscaria sings her aria, 
And Cuckoo tells us Spring is finally here.

This song is about the illusion of 'maya', aka the 'simulation', and about how only divine love or 'bhakti' can penetrate its veils or coding.

When Earth stands cold and hard as iron,

So let us talk about young Bridie, the Exalted One. 
Her face as luminous as the Moon that sired her, 
And her heart as bright as the yellow aconites 
That rise up smiling to the winter Sun.
While icicles still drip on the cobbled yard 
And the ice on the bird baths has to be cracked 
For the blue tits, starlings and tiny wrens,
Snowdrops spring up at her feet, wherever she treads, 
As Bride makes her way along the frozen tracks.

So let us praise Brigid of the Tuatha da Danaan, 
Beloved of poets, smiths and farmers alike. 
Ewes come into milk at the touch of her hand 
The rivers are once again jostling with pike, 
And even though Jack Frost still comes at night, 
And the tors and hills are white with snow, 
They turn coral at each sunrise and sunset, 
While carpets of crocus and periwinkles glow
As the gems in the rainbow of her necklace,
A covenant that Spring is on its way.

So let us light a candle for Brid at Imbolc, 
The triple-faced, ripe-wombed One, 
And put out offerings of milk in bowls 
To the Sow Mother, to the White Swan.
Her perpetual fire is kept ever aflame
In a shrine, deep in a hawthorn wood 
On these isles that were given her name
For her blooms and beehives, and orchards 
Where we sing to the apples at Wassail, 
In thanks for her bountiful blessings on us.

Imbolc

Andreas and I have decided to honour each of the 12 full moons of this year. So here is the first one for January, which is the Wolf Moon, and I hope the words give that some context, along with the haunting, mesmeric music. Do check out Andreas (@APi_ZZ) here.

Snug and warm, curtains closed,

On the mountain, a grey wolf howls. 

Lone Wolf Moon, sailing above 
In skies sparkling with meteors,
Their silver rain, a gift of love 
From the Sun in Sagittarius.   
The Archer’s arrow's ready to fly 
Across the wheel of the zodiac 
Into the Taurean bull’s eye 
To augur the year’s coming trials. 

Dreaming through these nights of snow,
Under the aegis of Ursa Major, 
We ask the Wolf Moon to bestow 
Its gifts of the wild lupine nature, 
Of the sharp intuition of their kind, 
Their warmth and loyalty to their kin,
Their tight-bonded packs and tribes, 
And give us courage as we proceed, 
Along roads less travelled in our lives.

Wolf Moon

I wanted to explore the theme of the instant “hit by the thunderbolt” as expressed in Godfather 2, when Michael Corleone and Appolonia meet for the first time. I’ve alchemically blended it with the notion of quantum entanglement: twin souls who, it’s believed, incarnate and reincarnate, lifetime after lifetime, just to be with one another. 

I fed the words into Udio with a few music prompts, and this is more or less what it produced, although greatly improved by the ‘maginations’ of Andreas (@APi_ZZ), who also mixed in my vocal with A.I.’s bluesy rock diva that we’ve affectionately named “Aretha”.

The thunder rolls above, mysteries untold

And we’re still soaked in that love today.
A gift from the gods as it rained cats and dogs

Snow Moon came sailing in on a black anvil cloud
And gazed down at the red roofs in the hushed vale below.
The people were fatigued, that much she knew. 
They felt it had been a long time since Yule, 
The grey-skied days were taking their toll. 
She could hear them as they slumbered on.
Their dreams and prayers stole through her heart 
On their way up the silver stairway to the stars. 

She waved to Aquarius, the Water Bearer,
In no time, sparkling crystals filled his pails,
And he tipped them down towards the vale. 
White lace fractal flakes fell in silent veils, 
Each one complete in itself; unique in shape,
Swaying in murmurations, in soundless accord, 
Whispering into swansdown drifts and banks
And turning the valley into a winter wonderland. 

Snow Moon shone in pleasure at her twinkling boon
Until dawn, when the Sun rose to light the scene 
With an iridescent pink and coral sheen. 
Then two small boys pulled back their blinds, 
Rubbing the sleep from their eyes in delight 
And wonder that their whole world was now white. 
They ran downstairs: “Dad! It’s snow! It’s snow! 
“Do you think the schools will be closed?” 

Dad smiled at the memory of his first Snow Day. 
No trains could run; black ice covered the lanes
It was days before the snow ploughs got through. 
So he knew that there was only one thing to do. 
He went out to his shed, the boys jumping in tow, 
And he reached up to bring down an odd-looking gizmo, 
“What’s that, Dad?” his sons wanted to know,
“It’s a toboggan,” he replied with eyes alight. “Let’s go!”

I thought I'd have some fun, recasting Patsy Cline's much-loved classic through the modern cod psychology terms that get flung around, willy-nilly, on social media. I couldn't have done it, though, without Andreas's beautifully-crafted musical arrangement! Our apologies to Willie Nelson. 😀

Crazee

If the Celtic god Hu Gardn was setting out to seduce Gaia, the goddess of Earth, he might sing her a lusty fertility song like this one. Hu is the mythical operator of The Plough constellation, which rises in the night skies at Spring in the northern hemisphere. 

I wrote the lyrics and then Andreas (@APi_ZZ) found our Hu vocalist on Suno, and dusted him down with some of his extra special magic dust — and this is the result. We hope you like it.

Meet me at dark, under the light of the moon.
I yearn for my sap to throb into life for you,
And the hawthorn buds to burst into bloom
Under the glistening downfall of silver dew,

Rites of Spring (erotic)

On the evening of 28th February, seven major planets in our Solar System appeared in the night sky at the same time, with Mars, Venus, Mercury, Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter and Uranus all lining up in a neat row next to the Sun. 

Nobody knows the last time that this major planetary reunion occurred. But Andreas (@APi_ZZ) thought it might be fun to imagine what the craic would be all about, and so this is what we've come up with.

The Seven Stars

This is the most ancient love song in the world,  by the Sumerian goddess Inanna to her lover, the shepherd Dumuzi. 

You find lots of erotic imagery in the arts connected to the temple sex rites of the Fertile Crescent, which were about the Divine Marriage or Alchemical Marriage. This poem, attributed to Inanna, comes from the Isin-Larsa period (2017-1763 BCE) in Uruk, in which the EN-priest or king would engage in sexual congress with Inanna’s representative from the ranks of ENTU-priestesses.

You may recognise the lyrics -  we've reimagined Eleanor Farjeon's hymn Morning Has Broken (made famous by Cat Stevens and Rick Wakeman) for the 21st century by giving it a modern choir arrangement in the style of John Rutter and John Taverner, via Udio.

Morning

I wrote these words during a shamanic darkness initiation in 2005, in which I'd been blindfolded and kept in the dark for three days. Someone put a pad and pen in my hand. I couldn't even see what I was writing. It turned out to be my first ever poem. I didn't know then that I was writing a song that I'd be making the music for with Suno, and putting on Soundcloud two decades later! 🙏

The absence of light over a long period causes the brain to produce its own natural DMT and so the visions are as good as with any other psychotropic substance, like peyote or magic mushrooms.

Black black black 
Deepest velvetest black...
The land of the Midnight Sun.
Where iridescent white lilies glow 
And shimmer.
Where vast cathedrals rise up and fall.
Where vibrant rainbow feathers flutter by
And then dissolve.
Where the World Tree reaches up to heaven.
Where glittering winged dragonflies zoom in
And then disappear
Where huge caverns drip with shimmering stalactites,
And then open up into tunnels of light.

The Darkness

The moon for March is known today as the Worm Moon. However, the roots of the moon names are lost “in the mists of time” as they say. So after some discussion, Andreas and I came to the view that this March moon was most probably named after the Old English/Saxon for ‘dragon’ which is ‘wyrm’, as it is known in the 10th century epic Beowulf, and that the common-or-garden worm was named after its mightier mythical ancestor. So here it is, and we hope you like it!

Dream Lover

This is about a sacred sexual initiation that's buried deep in the weave of the heroic epic, Beowulf. The monk scribes of the 9th century Nowell Codex transcription do touch on it, but portray it as a fight leading to a curse. However, we have reimagined that story from the shamanic point of view, which would have prevailed in the pre-Christian times when the story was originally composed. This initiation then would have been regarded as a great blessing on that king because it granted him the sovereignty of the land and the wisdom to rule it.

Initiation

I was interested to see whether Udio could do a Baroque-style Magnificat in Latin, and I'm pleased with this result. "Beatissimus" means "most blessed" as Mary describes herself in this song, after being visited by the angel Gabriel.

It is a Suno rendition of the traditional Sanctus from the Latin Mass for the Dead, or Requiem. I must admit I was gasping when I heard the high notes their 'alto soloist' was able to reach.

6. Sanctus

The Introitus could be compared to an overture at an opera. It is, anyway, the first part of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead, or Requiem, which is recited or performed as the Deceased is being first presented at the altar. 

If you're familiar with the Introitus but find something strange in the vocals, it might be because I've feminised the godhead (to Domina) and changed Jerusalem to Avalon.

I asked A.I. (Udio) for a boys choir singing this in acapello Gregorian chant, and it couldn't do it... but it did give me this, which I think sounds quite extraordinarily beautiful and not like anything I've ever heard before. It even features a whistling countertenor. 😉

2. Eleison

The Dies Irae is the opening track to a whole fairly lengthy section of the Requiem that deals with the terrors of the Day of Judgement before the throne of God. 

Dies illa, dies irae, calamitatis et miseriae: dies magna et amara valde.
That day, a day of wrath, calamity and misery: a great and very bitter day.

It didn't make the cut with my Requiem Quia Magnus Vir because I wanted that album to highlight the gentle kind mercy of the Divine Feminine. Besides, the awful Day of Judgement doesn't chime in with my more shamanic understanding of death. But still Udio made a good tune for it, and so here it is.

Dies Irae

It is a celebration of the mercy and justice of the Queen of Heaven.

Due to your grace, life is changed, not taken away: and the temporary home of this earthly sojourn is compared to an eternal dwelling in heaven. 

And therefore with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions, with all the host of the heavenly host, we sing a hymn to your glory.

5. Magna Mater

Funny story: This track, along with all the others on this album, was made by A.I. with just me supplying the lyrics and prompts to tell it what I wanted. But when I put in "Amen", the A.I. bot told me I couldn't have it because the word is copyrighted. 😲

So here is how I got around it:

This is a chant in Sanskrit to the Indian god Shiva, from a poem by Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902). 

Om namah shivayah 
nikhila bhuvana janma
sthemabhaṅga prarohah
akalitamahimana kalpita 
yatra tasmin
suvimala gaganabhe 
isasamsthe pyanise 
mama bhavatu bhavesmin 
Bhasuro bhavabandhah

May my luminous love fasten firm to Him, to Shiva,
In whom arise visions of glories immeasurable!
May my luminous love cling to Him who is utterly pure, like the sky,
Who is Lord of all, having no lord over Himself!

I made this on Suno, as part of my ongoing experiments to see how far I can push A.I. music with dead priestly languages! 😇  Thanks to @APi_ZZ for mixing it, and also for the excellent titling on the cover.

Om Namah Shivaya

I gave Suno an extract from a poem by W.B. Yeats entitled "He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven", and then spent hours and hours going through innumerable iterations with different prompts about instrumentation, style and genre until I was ready to give up, when I finally reached this one... which I instantly loved. 😎

Words: 
O cloud-pale eyelids, dream-dimmed eyes, 
The poets labouring all their days 
To build a perfect beauty in rhyme 
Are overthrown by a woman's gaze 
And by the unlabouring brood of the skies 
And therefore my heart will bow, when dew 
Is dropping sleep, until God burn time, 
Before the unlabouring stars and you.

Cloths of Heaven

This is our moon for April, the Egg Moon, in which we dramatise an old Greek myth that gives meaning to that name.

I would like to begin with “once upon a time” 
Except ... we begin where there is no beginning,
Way far back .... where there is no Time,
Only glittering black as far as the eye can see,
The cosmic or firmamental seas, as they’re known
So vast and unending they even dwarf infinity.
On the coils of a serpent, in the middle of this ocean
Sleeps naked, the beautiful Eurynome
With a heart as full as the day is long,
And with a love so deep it could drown a leviathan. 

She dreams of her lover upon whom she sleeps,
Ophion, who lives only to serve her every need,
To fertilise the seeds from these primordial deeps
To birth, into form, her every love-soaked fantasy.
And so it came about that she had a desire
To express the feelings of her heart in hymns,
For planets and stars to form and sing as choirs
Under the vaulted arches of a great empyrean
Lit only by the sun through the stained-glass windows
Of the crystals of her heavenly auditorium. 

So Ophion came in her dream, with her to lay
And plant his seed; then she turned into a dove
And took flight to hatch her egg upon the waves.
Ophion wound himself round it, in seven tiers,
To warm the germs within the crystalline shell,
Until the egg split and from it, all life streamed,
All that exists: suns, moons, planets...stars as well, 
Even Earth with its mountains, rivers and trees,
And all creatures and folk, both good and bad,
Every one had their place in her planetarium. 

As she stood enthralled by the harmony of the spheres,
Ophion placed an egg-shaped moon near our world,
So that we would recognise the story, told in the stars,
That, one day, the beautiful Dreamer would awake
And all this life would seem as if it had never been.
That’s why, at Easter, we share eggs as keepsakes
To honour the memory of the creatrix Eurynome
And her lover, Ophion, that wisest of sea snakes,
Who birthed the stories of all our lives in song,
And of those who came before us, and those still to come.

Egg Moon

I gave my lyrics to Udio and asked it for some country rock. It came back with this sort of Tex Mex/Bob Dylan Rolling Thunder Review type vibe which took me back to when I was living in Cornwall and growing my own bread... or something. 🤨

Million Lives

This is my first attempt at mixing my own track. I've tried to recreate something of the flavour of an indigenous tribe's shamanic ceremony, using my own chanting, drumming and gourd rattling, and with some help from conga drums, cowbells and rainsticks samples. It's a bit wobbly and rustic in parts, but so are these improvised events... often.  Anyway, I do hope to improve if you'll bear with me and I would welcome any constructive criticism.

Tribal

The shaman's trance into the Otherworlds is called a journey, and sometimes referred to as "magical flight". In my second attempt at mixing my own music, I wanted to try to capture what it can be like to leave all the "noise" of this world behind and "fly" into another one.

Magical Flight

I can't think of a single thing to say about this track, except I'm grateful to @APi_ZZ for teaching me how to change BPMs on drum tracks and also his inspired titling of the cover.

Crocodile

Andreas (@APi_ZZ) and I collabed musically to create this track, the second one in a planned new album called Tribe. 

My chanting of the Sanskrit mantra is to Mahakala, the same Vajrayana Buddhist deity Mahagali addressed in the female's Mongolian song. It is a powerful mantra for purification and energy cleansing - "banishing demons" as they used to call it. 

We used a morin khuur (horsehair fiddle) and a specific kind of Mongolian throat singing called hooliin chor meaning 'throat harmony'.
