No man is an island ......a wise man once said. 
But an island is an island, that cannot be denied, 
Nor that those who live on islands evolve in different ways 
To their contemporaries in places like, say, Vladivostok or Monterey. 


Some call it “island syndrome”; it's not a painful condition. 
It’s just how we grew in our homeland, and not even of our own volition, 
On the Isle of the Strong Door, surrounded by a deep blue moat,
Our smallest became gigantic, while our giants became remote.


 “But you are no-one! You're so small!” go the voices beyond our walls, 
“You’ll never survive, let alone thrive, all alone as you are on the world stage.” 
Except we have done – ever since the last Ice Age.
And it may have passed them by, but haven’t they heard? 
Our language is the lingua franca of the world.  

Bran was the last giant of this Mighty Isle, or so it is told in our myths. 
On his death bed, he ordered that his head should be buried in the towering white Dover cliffs. 
Since then, it has guarded the wave-tossed straits, staring forbiddingly out from our shores, 
Rendering all invaders at checkmate, unless those inside open the Strong Door.

Isle of the Strong Door

Here is our track for Christmas, describing the oldest Nativity tale that was drawn by our earliest ancestors in the night skies of the stars. I'm very grateful to @APi_ZZ for such divine, sacred and uplifting music.

1. It comes upon a midnight clear, that glorious song of old,
 When angels bend so near the Earth, they touch their harps of gold.


 2. In the quiet of deepest night, when only the clock sounds on the stair 
The Sun returns and moves into line with its twin Underworld pair.


3. Now the Archer's stars are fading as Cygnus the Swan raises the veil, 
For the Virgin to appear with the cup of Crater, the Holy Grail.


4. Then as the Sun casts a-glow on the land, up comes the Serpent Slayer. 
Ophiuchus is rising, and he brings with him all the ancients’ prayers
For now the cast of stars are all here for the Mystery Play to unfold 
A drama staged in the skies at Christmas since time immemorial.

5. We come together under the noonday sun for the joyful feast of Yule, 
When the ring of the constellations crosses the ring of the Milky Way
and forms the Vesica Piscis with, at its heart, the birthing pool 
The manger of the stable, guarded by asses eating hay.
A covenant of joy, of birth and rebirth, on this blessed Christmas Day. 

6. Dusk soon falls, and the Hunter Orion appears in the East 
Three wise men are riding camels across the stars at his waist
They are carrying the precious gifts of frankincense, myrrh and gold 
As the merry-making for the Nativity begins down on Earth below. 
The Hunter’s emissary, the White Stag, stands proudly in the snow 
In a forest of pines, dripping with icicles and worms a-glow, 
Its crown is of holly; its huge antlers are hung with mistletoe.
The trees are frosted white from the Sugar Plum Fairy flying by 
And hanging them with ribbon-tied bundles of red and white spotted fungi, 
Walnuts in their shells, sweet honeyed apricots and cinnamon sticks, 
Oranges studded with star anise and gingerbread men grinning liquorice. 

7. Over the Well of the Stars, the flamed-mouthed Dragon’s Head suddenly appears
It is orbiting around the poles behind the Harp and the Great Bear. 
Then a flash of electric turquoise lights up the indigo vault
Then sapphire-green, then lapis lazuli shot through with gold, 
The aurora borealis turns into the Queen of Heaven’s robes, 
As she opens up the stargates for us to hear the Christmas song of old.

Yule

This is the most ancient love song in the world,  by the Sumerian goddess Inanna to her lover, the shepherd Dumuzi. 

You find lots of erotic imagery in the arts connected to the temple sex rites of the Fertile Crescent, which were about the Divine Marriage or Alchemical Marriage. This poem, attributed to Inanna, comes from the Isin-Larsa period (2017-1763 BCE) in Uruk, in which the EN-priest or king would engage in sexual congress with Inanna’s representative from the ranks of ENTU-priestesses.

The Introitus could be compared to an overture at an opera. It is, anyway, the first part of the Roman Catholic Mass for the Dead, or Requiem, which is recited or performed as the Deceased is being first presented at the altar. 

If you're familiar with the Introitus but find something strange in the vocals, it might be because I've feminised the godhead (to Domina) and changed Jerusalem to Avalon.

1. Introitus

I was inspired by the Woman of Valour acrostic poem in Proverbs 31, but I have changed the words considerably, to make it more about an indigenous shamanic tribal woman. Plus I mixed in some shamanic drumming and also a field recording of a woman chanting at a fire ceremony.

Where Two Worlds Meet

This is the first track of a new album entitled Doors to Silence. My lyrics were inspired by Sri Aurobindo's The Word of Silence. The mantra "Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu" helps to remove us from our thoughts... it means "May all creatures everywhere be happy and free, and may my thoughts, words, and actions contribute to that happiness and freedom of all.”

Silence

Bhakti is a Sanskrit word meaning "devotion," "love," or "attachment”. It’s about a loving, emotional relationship with a personal god, and can also involve devotion to a formless ultimate reality or an enlightened being. 

I wrote these lyrics last year when I released them as a spoken word poem in a track called Divine Commedia dell-Arte.

You sent me the colours of a summer’s dawn 
On the morning of Solstice, last year. 
Wedding band gold and Bridie’s slipper pink,
Just one small, shy honeysuckle flower…
But it was enough to make your feelings clear. 

The bloom then faded, and it followed the Sun 
On its passage down to the Underworld, 
I looked every day, but no more have come. 
Yet your passion for me will last and last, 
For long after this life’s romance is done. 

You make love to me in every dimension, 
In every realm, but not, it seems, this one. 
I know you’re there, hiding in your creation 
Your love song, your maya simulation 
That masks you from the sight of my heart.
The juggler, the trickster, the mercurial mixer
Of this Venetian carnival’s Commedia Dell’arte. 

Sometimes you leave me tiny dew-drop diamonds 
To show you care, to show you’re really there 
In my night garden at dusk; then at midnight

Bhakti

I do think the ancients were very clever. They hid the secrets of their sacred sexual practises in beautiful poetic metaphors so they never had to put Explicit or Parental Advisory on their covers.  😉

This song was inspired by some lines by the Immortal Sisters,  as part of Taoist Tantric teachings, which describe how the female uses her breath to circulate elixirs throughout her body as a means to gain immortality. It's what alchemical classics call the living midnight ...when the medicine is produced. 


Tie up the tiger, let him sleep in his den,
Wild heart bound gentle, come home again.
Bridle the dragon, let the fire rise slow,
Pearl by pearl ...the elixir will grow.

Clear as the water, still as the stone,
Nature and mind return to their own.

Jade Gate

It's my understanding that the author Frank Herbert characterised his Bene Gesserit order of priestesses for his science fiction book Dune on a known Tibetan sisterhood who gained immortality from certain Taoist practises, including sacred Tantric sex.  Certainly, he took many ideas from their texts, such as the prana bindu practises and the Sabda. 

This Sisterhood's teachings are only remembered today in the secret order of the White Tigresses in Taiwan. Gesserit is an anagram of Tigeress. Herbert's characterisation of them as sadistic sorceresses was, imho, just a product of typical Jungian fears  some men have about female power.

Mourning

For my new book, I'm creating a Rosetta Stone for this erotic poem from the Bible, the Song of Songs, as it is  literally dripping with sacred sexual alchemical mystic symbolism. So I just couldn't resist putting it to music.

The words are a mash-up from the writings of the 13th century mystic  Mechthilde of Magdeburg.

I felt inspired by some things that were said by Antoni Gaudi, the unique Spanish designer and architect of the early 20th century, so I made them into this song.

When we look at the ancient love songs of the Sumerians and Babylonians, we find that to those folks, although they buried hidden meanings in flowery and delicate metaphors, lovemaking was a much deeper and mystical experience to them.... at least more than we are taught to expect today. It was actually a path to spiritual enlightenment. So I was intriqued to see if I could I make my own Song of Songs.

Soul

This was inspired by Federico Fellini’s La Strada, a film about travelling circus folk in post-war Italy. I thought it would be fun to reimagine the scene in which le Mat (the Fool) proposes to Gelsomina that she leave her brutish, unfaithful husband, the Strongman, to be with him... unlike in the movie, she accepts.

La Strada

The words come from the 19th century German philosopher Paul Carus, and I just gave them to an Estonian choir.  The intro vocal is a field recording of a Burundi tribeswoman.

There is a saying: “The only difference between mythology and history is that myths are true.” I’ve gone down deep into that theme here. 

What would they think, what would they say
If the reel ran backwards, if the colours changed.
Every staircase they climbed, every door they locked
Was a different house with a different name.
The story they carry like stone in their chests
Crumbles to ashes when the mirror turns west,
And the face looking back never quite belonged
To the life they were singing all along.

Mirror

You may have heard this extract from my book The Dragon Whisperer's Son in a musical version created by myself and @APi_ZZ called Father to Son. My aim was  to capture the healing qualities of Beauty, usually only found in Nature, and my understanding that true Beauty is not just a cosmetic nicety, but runs deep into our psyche to restore the Wasteland.


This is the moment Beauty stops time
For just a breath, for just a glance
It asks nothing but quiet attention
In return, it gives the world a second chance 

This is that time and place
Where Beauty conquers chaos
Eros becomes our guiding light
As he carves the night… from day 

Just look at the symmetry
Just listen — the harmony
Just feel… the bliss 

Now breathe in
Breathe out the grace
Embrace the serenity
The god-given mercy
Of this hallowed state

This is that sacred space
Where order blooms from wildness
Eros lifts the veil of dark
And turns the shadows into light

Arrows of starlight fly from his bow
Piercing the veil with eyes of blue fire

Beauty

I've put into a song an ancient Greek creation myth .... the only one I've managed to find that has a female creator.  You may recognise the words and the cover from when I put it out as a spoken word poem last year, set to the music of @APi_ZZ, called Egg Moon https://soundcloud.com/annie-dieu-le-veut/egg-moon

I would like to begin 
with “once upon a time” 
except ... we begin where 
there is no beginning,
way far back ....where
there is no Time,
only glittering black 
as far as the eye can see,
the firmamental seas,
 as they are known
so vast and unending 
they even dwarf infinity.

On the coils of a serpent
in the middle of this ocean
sleeps naked, the
beautiful Eurynome
with a heart as full 
as the day is long,
and with a love so deep
it could drown a leviathan. 
She dreams of her lover 
upon whom she sleeps,
Ophion, who lives only 
to serve her every need.

And so it came about 
that she had a desire
to express the feelings 
of her heart in hymns,
For planets and stars 
to form and sing as choirs
under the vaulted arches 
of a great empyrean
lit only by the sun 
through the stained-glass
of the quartz crystals 
of her heavenly auditorium. 

Ophion came in her dream, 
with her to lay ... and
to plant his seed.
She turned into a dove
And then took flight 
to hatch her egg 
upon the waves.
Ophion wound around
it in seven tiers,
warming the germs within 
the crystalline shell,
until the egg split. 

From the egg, all life streamed,
All that exists: suns, moons, 
The planets and stars as well, 
Even Earth with its 
mountains, rivers and trees,
And all creatures and folk, 
both good and bad,
Each one had their place 
in her planetarium. 

As she stood enthralled 
by the harmony of the spheres,
Ophion placed an egg-shaped 
moon near our world,
So that we would recognise 
the story, told in the stars,
That, one day, the
dreamer would awake
And all this life would seem 
as if it had never been.

Our eggs at Easter 
Honour the memory 
of the dear Eurynome
And her lover, Ophion, 
that wisest of sea snakes,
Who birthed the stories 
Of our lives in song,
And of those who came before us, 
and those still to come.

Great Earthen sprites under diamond skies
Of Beltane constellations,
Rocked me to sleep with a lullaby,
Lunar mansions of star nations.
In magical flight, 
Hush hush, good night,
To flower plantations,
Where sun keepers gather to baptise
With kisses from carnations. 

The split-forked tongue of the serpent god 
Sparked red in the Tree of Life
Like Alice, adrift and over-awed,
All sense had taken flight.
I felt a fraud
Sapience roughshod,
For this wiley tutor, 
He handed me a measuring rod,
With a rhythm to keep time.

He told me to leave the meaning behind, 
And just let the beats flow free.
It seemed that the rhythm of the rhyme
Would be the remedy. 
Healing song lines
Across all times
In a sound frequency 
More like the waves fall and rise,
And come and go to the sea. 

The garden dissolved into silver mist
And I saw a tunnel of light 
Angelic souls were calling to me 
From the other side.
Waves turned to staves
For notes to dance
Along shimmering strings,
Laughing, delirious in trance
They blended in alchemy.

And so I left the meaning behind, 
And just let the beats flow free.
It seemed that the rhythm of the rhyme
Was truly the remedy.
