The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Alienata

Spanish-born, Berlin-based Alienata is a self-described sound obsessive
whose sets span obscure electro, ACID, dub, IDM, dark disco, hypnotic techno, industrial atmospheres, breakbeats, cosmic jazz , UK electro, Detroit, Chicago influences and crazy sounds in general. A former philosophy student with a particular interest in mysticism, Alienata began DJing in 2004. In conjunction with Valencia's Overflow Collective, she not only served as a resident DJ but also participated in theatre and music technology workshops and oversaw its label operations. Her earliest contact with Germany's music scene came through Leipzig's Homoelektrik collective, and upon moving to Berlin in 2011, she quickly found an adoptive family in the Killekill label and associated Krake Festival. This relationship helped make her a respected mainstay in clubs in Berlin, Germany and Europe, but her international profile has been steadily increasing each year: NYC, Chicago, Sydney, Melbourne, Bogotá, Moscow. In recent times we have been able to experience its genuine style in booths like Fabric, Panorama
Bar or ADE. When behind the decks, Alienata is closely attuned to both internal and external influences and is unconcerned with providing listeners with an outstanding and energetic experience. It is not strange that legends like Dave Clarke (who recently played a B2B in ADE) DJ Stingray, Ben Sims or Ron Morelli have expressed all their support and respect for her.

With all that knowledge behind and a true love for music she decided to start her own imprint “Discos Atónicos” in 2017 where she can materialize all its varied influences, counting on legendary artists like Beta Evers, Dez Williams, Artificiero, BS-1 or Cosmic Force.

While primarily focusing on DJing, Alienata has released a few different records & remixes in recent years with collaborations with Snuffo of the jacking Snuff Crew & Sync24 -CEO of the legendary UK electro imprint Cultivated Electronics- Her most recent contribution has been to the great Ben Sims ‘Tribology’ Compilation, together with artists of the size of Robert Hood, James Ruskin or Mark Broom.
Since 2017 she hosts a monthly show called ‘Nova Express’ on the French LYL radio.

Alex Rodriguez is a talented musician, music producer, and audio engineer originally from the “The Magic City” Miami, FL. Now residing in “The Valley” Phoenix, AZ, his ear for music has evolved to different heights.
Best known as Cloak, among several other pseudonyms, he has become one of the most revered Electro producers in the modern era. Debuting in 2006 he established his sound, consisting of hard booming beats, chilling samples, distorted tones, melodic synthesizers, and any noise that will make your body move. As the founding Member of “Ghostlight”, and “Cloak & Dagger”, he’s continued to push his music to the outer limits of sound. Influenced by the styles of Miami Booty Bass, Electro, and Hip Hop, he will almost always infuse each genre somehow in every production.
At age 16 he began using studio equipment under the direction of Dj/Producer Nick Pinnington, who felt his young protégé was always in the background or in “the dark”, which resulted in Alex taking the names Cloak & BackgroundNoize. Throughout the years he has been heavily influenced by producers such as: David Noller, Timbaland, Scott Christina, Aphex Twin, Dr. Dre, Anthony Rother, Dan Warren, Danny B, Scott Storch, The Neptunes, Nick Pinnington & Jason Williams. After High School he attended SAE Miami to learn the art of Audio Engineering, and perfect his craft. Cloak has written and produced multiple chart-topping bangers.
Cloak has collaborated with artists and labels such as: Code Rising, Phonotronix, Dagger, Elektro Global, Bass Agenda, Ohverclock, Inhuman Designed, James Wolfe, Trip Theory, Nick Wicked, Alekay, Synthetix and Dan Warren (Theory).

Altern-8 is an Early UK Rave music duo band featuring Mark Archer and Chris Peat.
They were one of the UK rave bands of the late 1980s and early 1990s whose trademark was loud electronic tracks with a heavy bass line. Altern-8's members wore facemasks and chemical warfare suits. The band was signed to Network Records based in Stratford House, Birmingham, England.

Altern-8 was formed in Stafford in 1990, as a side project to the already successful Nexus 21 (a name chosen because of its "futuristic House sound), when both members were 21. From the outset the band's objective was to develop their style which was heavily influenced by the musical elements of other Detroit House music artists Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, as well as the Chicago sound of Phuture and early electronic heroes Kraftwerk.

Altern-8 tunes changed the world of Rave music, influencing many artists, with their mixture of the sounds of the Roland TB-303, 808 and 909 with breakbeats and familiar samples. At the time in the UK, outdoor rave events were legal, and Altern-8 had a reputation for turning up to play at major unofficial events. They helped to define harder House tracks relying more heavily on bass and volume. The use of more bass and eclectic noises gradually evolved Altern-8's music away from the earlier House music style. The duo, dressed in chemical warfare suits and dancing "like electrified monkeys", took part in a large number of live performances.

Notable Altern-8 tracks include "Activ-8", "E-vapor-8", "Frequency", "Brutal-8-E", "Armageddon", "Move my body", "Hypnotic St-8" and "Infiltrate 202". The band produced an album on the Network Records label in 1992 called Full On... Mask Hysteria. However when hardcore-styled rave music went out of fashion they started to get involved in the development of commercial house music. In 1992, Peat entered as a candidate for the Stafford constituency in the General Election representing the Hardcore (Altern8-ive) party. He polled 158 votes and finished in fourth place. In 1993, Archer began producing as Slo Moshun with Danny Taurus, responsible for Bells of N.Y., and Xen Mantra.
