TEXTURE: Tell us a bit about your initial thought process in making this mix? Are there any certain stand out tracks to you?

CHARLES: I went into this mix wanting to showcase some of my favorite new records coming out of Detroit while also reflecting the origin of the sound of said tracks. There’s tunes from the Slyfox/Corn Dogs crew with their new label Clave House, also PGS (a couple new Shigeto tracks on here), Vanity Press, How to Kill (the new Shady P is really wild) and Black Catalogue among others. Lots of classic midwest stuff I grew up with that blurs genre lines.

T: What is one unforgettable moment you had this year?

C: This summer I saw Egyptian Lover for the first time in years and it took me back to what first inspired me to DJ and how fun it is to hear simple, well done doubles/beat juggling. He was spinning with Juan Atkins at Sugar Hill in Brooklyn, a classic spot from the disco/early hip-hop era, and it was a perfect day. For a second I felt like I was in New York of decades past, the scene that gave birth to the idea of looping up breaks, the prototype for modern dance music.

T: Who is inspiring you at the moment? (Artists, authors, political figures, philosophers, etc.)

C: I just finished Rainn Wilson (aka Dwight Schrute)’s autobiography “The Bassoon King”. It is not only hilarious but also a great insight into the world of performance as well as his spiritual and philosophical views. John Le Carré, former MI6 spy turned novelist. Also “leader of the free world” Angela Merkel.

T: Upcoming gigs, records, parties, projects, or other random stuff you're excited about?

C: Laying low the next few months as I re imagine my live set for a tour in Europe early next year. Excited for my new 12” coming out on Vanity Press Records, I ended the mix with one of those tracks. Enjoy!
