Hot on the heels of Volume 2 which dropped in March, Mella Dee and Reuben G get back to work with another grip of bassweight techno indebted to the legacy of Yorkshire bleeps and bass. The first two releases from SY Rockers took a minimal approach which doffed its cap to the stripped-down, original bleep era of the late 80s / early 90s, but this time around the duo take a wider look at other key sounds which evolved from those breakthrough days.

Lead track ‘Mighty’ comes on like another deadly dubwise bleeper in its opening bars, but it quickly opens up with a 4X4 garage shuffle that celebrates even more of the UK’s outsized low-end legacy. Alongside the tuff bump of the beat, you can also hear the looming influence of the Sheffield-centric niche / bassline
sound.

In another switched stance that shows how much inspiration is flowing between Mella and Reuben, ‘Always fwd’ goes in hard on bruk rhythms and a warping square wave b-line that hits a sweet spot between West London broken beat, ‘Pulse X’ grime and dubstep’s king-sized stomp.

Taking a trip back to the raw drum machine grooves and deeper tempo of foundational bleep, ‘Green Skies’ is a meditative finisher to this heavyweight EP which balances mammoth bass with atmospheric vocal samples and synth licks that connect to the enduring soundsystem influence.

BUGS - Steppin' In

For the third release on Astropical Tapes, the Polish label have invited various artists to contribute to the ‘Interstellar Funk’ EP. Among them are Marcin Krupa and Astro Buhloone, who contributed the past two releases on the label, alongside a host of new talent. 

One of these new artists is Easy Audio, whose effort ‘Gypsy Funk’ we premiere today. ‘Gypsy Funk’ uses snatches of vocals and a 2-step drum pattern to create a vivacious sense of life within the track. This is supplemented by strummed guitars and whispering flutes that sound like they are lifted from old traveller’s folk music, perhaps explaining the song’s title.
