This mix was recorded in June 2000, 3 days after the first DEMF. I had just moved into a different place in Detroit, and the last items left in my old downtown apartment were 2 Technics, a tape deck, hi-fi amp + speakers, and a Numark DM-1550 rotary mixer from the 80s. In those days I'd been going out to see Theo Parrish + KDJ play small loft parties around town, and was listening to a ton of old WBMX/WGCI radio mixes and Ron Hardy Music Box recordings......this session, each side recorded directly to cassette in one take, is a reflection of those circumstances and influences.

We started ‘The Classic Series’ featuring tracks that we love, bought, played out and which we have the feeling more people should know about them. For this sixth release, It is a great honor for us to welcome such a living legend, a pioneer from the Detroit sound : Mr.De’.

This project includes four brilliant rare cuts and timeless moments of Ghetto tech sounds from Electrofunk’s catalogue.

After over ten years of work as a producer and nearly twenty years of making electronic music, Mr. De' has a sound drawn from a number of funk-based urban sounds, blending them together into a composite whole that emphasizes up-tempo booty shakin'over the chin-stroking styles of techno. Following the release of his debut album and the continuing success of Electrofunk Records, Mr.De’ has solidified his position at the forefront of Detroit dance music.

Today, Mr.De’ is the originator of pure ghettotech. At the helm of Electrofunk's distribution arm, he also controls the destiny of his fellow ghettotech peers in Detroit as they try and spread their sound outside of the city. Whether or not the rest of the world is ready for this Detroit-bred, post-modern style of urban music is an unanswered question, but there is no questioning the fact that Mr. De' may just be the most important man in that crusade.

The trees blew gracefully in the autumn breeze as the sky turned a beautiful shade of crimson red. It echoed the glowing colour which poured from the trees and lay scattered across the forest floor. Upon the wind there was the faint sound of music, a song about a dream and the pensive wish for a season lost to the depths of darkness. It felt like this every year, autumn had shown the colours of the season once more and banished the summer far, far away. 

Al Zanders is the next to appear on the Phonica Records label. The imprint run by the London based record store has moved from strength to strength as of late having released music by the likes of Roman Flugel, Peggy Gou and many more.

Whim-ee aka Sara Garcia is a French dj/producer. Originally from Recife (Brazil),  she relocated to Paris as a child where she began her journey in music via nine years of classical piano schooling. Whim-ee later began experimenting with electronic music, injecting her own unique fusion of house, techno, jazz, funk and soul. She also manages her own labels ; Tao-Dan Records and W-EE Records.

Following up releases on labels such as Got2go, Chilli Mint Music and Nite Grooves, Whim-ee carries influences primarily from Chicago and Detroit into her forward-reaching productions that are consistently suffused with a tough and gritty sense of soul. Very deep and unique in her style and vibe…

The mysterious duo, better known as Ultradyne, has been making some of the more interesting and unique electro music to grace a turntable. Previously they have referred to their hometown of
Detroit as their training ground but thats where the connection ends, this is music that does not belong to any regional pigeonhole.
They have a multitude of releases since 1993, all quality, with even the strangest and most impenetrable tracks on first listen finally revealing themselves to be the diamonds in the rough they
are. As for their artwork, song titles and lyrics, thats a whole other area to get lost in as with this band even a typeface could mean something. Basically, like all the best things you have to make an effort with this group. The fact that Ultradyne normally lets the music do the talking for them and are rarely unmasked has not done them any harm in the development of a strong cult following around
the world. In the past they have hinted at their motivation when they spoke about their name meaning the perfect machine, but a machine of ideas whose motion is perpetuated by those who are
willing to listen and obey.

It is now time to listen and obey!

Indigo aera is proud to release a truly special project from Japan's Yamoaka.

Yamoaka was originally formed by renowned Japanese duo Kenichi Oka and Yoshinori Yamazaki, until 2007 when the project was continued solo by Kenichi Oka. 

Kenichi strictly uses hardware and creates unique loop based bleep sounds which draws resemblances with minimalist Steve Reich but also blending in a techno-esque touch comparable to Terrence Dixon's Population one. Kenichi has a fixed forward style of working: all tracks are made with hardware live in real time, without use of computers, only controlled by the Roland MC50 as a sequencer. Kenichi achieves a live feel to all his work, recording his tracks in real time without the use of DAW's or computers, instead utilising his Roland MC50 sequencer with perfect effect.

As long time fans of Kenichi's 'under the radar' work, Indigo aera bosses Jasper and Maarten approached him to release a retrospective selection of his works for the first time on vinyl. The result is a collection of hand picked tracks previously released on CD-only plus 4 completely new and unheard.

The double 12" is also a follow-up to the 2x12" Indigo mini album series which featured tracks from Louis Haiman and Kirk Degiorgio. Similarly, this release is highly limited to 298 copies only and released on vinyl only.

“Kendama” is the heaviest cut here, a deep psychedelic outing that’s swathed in a foggy haze.  Abstracted digi-flutes and koto plucks are paired with a skull-boring bassline and exacting breakbeat dissection, adding some levity to the leaden heaviness of the track’s bass-weight.
