THE ORIGIN OF STARS.

The best scientific thinking has not yet solved the mistery of the origin of stars. But astronomer Henry Norris Russell, in showing relattion between spectral class and absolute brightness of stars, indicated a possible evolution of stars. The youngest are perhaps the largest, very light , red giants. Shrinking, these grow hotter, causing they color change to yellow, white, and blue.
Finally they can no longer contract normally and the energy relaesed decreases; They cool and became red stars. Supergiant and dwarf stars seem to follow different patterns of change.
Astronomers are perplexed also by evidence suggesting that the entire universe is expanding rapidly. The more distant clusters and galaxies seem to be receding at tremendous speeds. How this process began and how it will end, and whether the expansion is true or only apparent, are cuestions that amateurs will gladly leave to professional scientist.
