Hukwe Ubi Zawose
Born: 1938 or 1940 in Dodoma, Tanganyika.
Died: December 30th 2003 in Bagamoyo, Tanzania.

As a young boy, Hukwe Zawose's voice stood apart from the rest of his people, the Wagogo, who always sang while harvesting their fields. Soon he would travel to other villages to amuse working Tanzanian people. Later, having grown exponentially as a singer, he travelled farther and wider, leaving behind legends of his astonishing five-octave voice everywhere he went. He grew as a musician too, playing the ilimba (a large thumb piano), filimbi (a traditional flute), izezes (traditional violins) and nguga (ankle bells).
Zawose became sort of a living legend after being asked to perform for the prime minister, Julius Nyerere. Fantastic stories of mythical power rose, making Zawose an immortal and divine being; his voice possessed magical healing powers.
Despite his great fame he continued to live his life traditionally with his four wives and fifteen children, one of whom, Charles, was his constant companion on stage. Hukwe Zawose is considered a pioneer and one of the most famous musicians in the world music scene. More

Inspired equally by classic Sudanese synth music, Black Sabbath and Disco - Gitkin's new single "The One"  combines Tuareg style guitars + big distorted riffs that meet an electronic arpeggiating Morodor style bassline and drums inspired by the early aughts Williamsburg Indie Sleaze sound. Culminating in a hill country blues groove, it's a mash of influences that shouldn't make sense, but under the vision of producer + one man band Brian J it somehow works, and pretty well at that.

Gitkin - The One

In 2015, after 10 years of recording and touring through over 50 cities in five different countries, electronic folk duo Lulacruza released Orcas, their critically-acclaimed fifth studio album, and most intimate work to date. To make the recording, Lulacruza traveled from their native South America to Orcas Island in the Pacific Northwest, crafting a both delicate and powerful album, which has garnered critical acclaim from Gilles Peterson to the Huffington Post, who wrote, “As musical alchemists, [Alexandra] Ortiz and [Luis] Maurette have achieved a harmonious balance between organic and inorganic sounds, creating a truly shamanic sonic journey.” 

January 15th, 2016 will mark the release of the first volume of Orcas Remixed, for which Lulacruza invited a select group of internationally renowned electronic music producers from across the globe to remix and rework their pristine, hyper-acoustic songs. The remixes will be released in five volumes of four remixes each through a “pay-what-you-want” download model, matching up producers from a wide range of genres and collectives, including digital cumbia from Argentina, New Mexican desert techno, transformational jungle kirtan and more. 

Orcas Remixed Vol. 2 includes remixes by Chancha Via Circuito, David Last, King Coya and MI. Other volumes feature remixes by Nicola Cruz, El Buho, SaQi, and Sleepers Work, Desert Dwellers, Paul Feathericci, San Ignacio, David Last, Montoya, EVHA and more. 

Lulacruza is releasing Orcas Remixed in collaboration with Colorado-based label, Black Swan Sounds. Since 2011, BSS has pursued a new vision for global music and has been a leader in the yoga and devotional electronic music scene, a unique match for Lulacruza’s deep roots of electronic folklore and ancestrally rooted music. Says Black Swan Minister of Music Joel Davis, “As a listener, I’ve been a fan of Alejandra and Luis’ music for several years, and as someone working in the record industry, I’ve admired their out-of-the-box, DIY approach. Given Black Swan’s aim to create a new paradigm for the 21st century record label, teaming up with Lulacruza on the Orcas Remixed project feels like a natural fit.”

To celebrate the summer solstice we are incredibly excited to present Ñuka Shunku, the debut EP by Ecuadorian singer-songwriter Huaira.

Based in Quito, Huaira is one of the leading names in the emerging Ecuadorian scene of young musicians and producers seeking inspiration in the country’s folklore and reimagining what it could sound like in the 21st century. Huaira’s name first received global recognition for her collaboration with Nicola Cruz on his track Colibria, from his debut album Prender el alma but on this EP her own talent as a songwriter shines with four beautiful tracks inspired by the incredible nature around her and Ecuador’s rich ancestral roots.

On Ñuka Shunku, which means “I am pure heart” in quechua, Huaira shares a sound that seems to embody Ecuador’s incredible landscapes -  the lush rainforest, the soaring mountains and the stunning beauty of her country. She presents a new, deeper, more spiritual aspect to the organic-electronic scene, as if drawing her own voice and lyrics from the earth or madre tierra itself. In her own words:

“It is sharing a message that comes from the earth itself, from the ancestors. Tangible ideas that materialise in music to inspire, celebrate and share the roots of our untameable America, a continent that never stops to remind us of something we often forget: we live in a paradise.”

On this EP Huaira worked with three of the biggest talents from Ecuador’s new wave of folk musicians, brothers Pablo and Julio Vicencio (sons of legendary Ecuadorian folk musician Mauricio Vicencio), and guitarist Diego Illescas. An example of the collaborative nature of the global scene, Ñuka Shunku also features collaborations with fellow artists exploring the meeting of folk or roots music with electronica Rodrigo Gallardo, and El Búho alongside Alejandra Ortiz from the duo Minük.

Huaira and her band will be on tour in Europe this summer playing in seven cities and sharing their show in places like Fusion Festival in Germany, amongst others.
