I agree, without the advent of the mobile web I doubt gamification would have had the same ability to become so pervasive in our everyday lives. The GPS function and the instantaneous connection of smartphones allows for many things to become easily gamified.

I've been using Zombie run for the past three years, it's been great! For someone like myself, who has a terrible competitive streak, gamification has become a great tool in self motivation for the most mundane tasks. I mean, who doesn't like to win!

Thanks for an interesting reflection on gamification here - I enjoyed hearing from someone who's used the Zombie app. You made some great points about the role of 'failure', 'competition', and the role of intrinsic/extrinsic motivation - I would have been interested to hear how these concepts might relate to the app you discuss in more detail. So true! Gaining another badge or 'completing' a level makes me feel as though I've mastered a certain skill and feel more confident applying it to real life situations.

I remember at the end of Zombies, Run! season one I was convinced that the outcome of the season was because I hadn't succeeded, but then season two started at I calmed down.

This week we discuss the UX and Instructional Design potential of Gone Home, 2013’s 12th highest rated PC game on MetaCritic and the 2014 Games for Change Game of the Year. It’s also an excellent walking simulator.

Episode 02 - Gone Home

In a smaller “lockpick" episode, we take a look at the new awkwardly named game Mr. Robot: 1.51exfiltrati0n. The game (available for iOS and Android) pretends to be a messaging app like WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. 

Set in the world of the TV show Mr. Robot, you take on the role of a hacker specializing in social engineering. It’s a choose your own adventure style experience where you decide whether and how to blackmail and coerce your way into systems. 

Mr. Robot: 1.51exfiltrati0n serves as an interesting exploration into how chatbots or other text interfaces might be useful in training and experiential learning.
