Objects at Hand is the result of an ongoing collaboration between Dirty Electronics (John Richards) and T M Shaw.

Just before lockdown in 2020 Richards and Shaw finished a tour, Points of Failure, which involved building performance-installations in various venues across the UK. These environments, made up of DIY devices and found objects, were constructed in response to the performance spaces, and consisted of sound, light, smell, smoke and other sonic processes.

Objects at Hand was recorded retrospectively in remote locations and then edited and mixed as a memory trace and document of the sounds, physical spaces and objects encountered on the tour.

Action, uncontrollable instruments, unstable systems, performative failures, reimagined affordance of objects, playing with resource, improvising inside electronics, assembling and disassembling sound devices, architectural features are folded into this performance document.

Richards and Shaw see their work as a form of ‘cybernetic wayfaring’, improvising with materials, feedback and new situations, as they continue, and repeat.

Tolchneva is no newcomer, even though “Moroka” is her first full-length recording. She’s been playing in Tikhie Kamni with Moa Pillar, done magnetic sound installations and participated in countless performances on the verge of sound art and contemporary dance.

Anastasia Tolchneva’s debut album is full of hints at “wave music” and post-club microgenres but the scale of composition and production is way beyond the typical expectations of “bedroom tracks”. Full of digital sheen, cold synth lines are more than an accompanient for Anastasia’s powerful voice rooted in Northern Russian folk tradition. She sings in her mother tongue with zero histrionics. Often dipping into rivers of sub-bass, these expansive, intense, powerful songs and suites are aimed at an attentive listener and full of nuances. In a way, “Moroka” is a constant gut-punch, but it's also incredibly moving.

Lovozero’s debut album is definitely a statement that makes for a difficult and rewarding listen.

A world within a world is equally finite - and the utopian ideals of an ungoverned second life found old principles (or lack thereof), merely copied and pasted over from its irl predecessor. With the bandwidth exceeded; they banned those which offered less power, less good behaviour, less money. But upkeep the server of the elite, and you shall gain entry.”

The latest sonic output of artist-producer-dj-polymath Moonbow comes served in the form of a 12” vinyl on West Friends: the imprint spearheaded by South London’s Rye Wax & FYI Chris. After three years of quietly producing, Moonbow’s name is most familiar within the London nightlife scene, where — alongside their work within SIREN collective — they are known for their colourful DJ sets & mixtapes, leading to a mention in Crack Magazine’s “Top 10 Mixes of 2018”, guest mixing on Rinse FM and contributing to Honey Soundsystem’s mix series. These sonic tapestries are an exercise in storytelling that is at once euphoric and melancholic, whilst delving into both the old and new. Often known to make an appearance are chopped 'n' spliced vocals, silky psychedelic melodies, and bass vibrations so heavy that no nearby drinks are safe from spillage.

These characteristics can certainly be found on BNND WDTH, where the A-side is a tense build up of transcendental textures and rhythms that moves ever closer towards the dance floor compared to Moonbow’s earlier releases. On the side B, Discwoman affiliate and Toronto’s favourite one-to-watch Ciel takes the helm on a psychedelic breaks rework (one you may have seen many an “ID?” for in THAT Crack Magazine mix from SIREN DJs).

After 5 years of 'Fortnightly Freebies' columns collating our favourite free downloads, we decided to do things a bit differently for the 100th chapter. Introducing 'Big Material', a 19-track 'name your price' compilation that will donate 100% of profits made to Stonewall Housing, a London-based charity supporting some of the most marginalised and vulnerable in our society.

At a time when unfair austerity is increasing inequality and leaving so many behind, we hope to support a community that has given so much to the 'scene' and music we love. Digi-dub abstractions and drifting ambient to kaleidoscopic breaks and newly-coined genre, 'subtle donk', it's a pretty accurate microcosm of the If-Only curation as a whole.

Big Material pulls together music from some of If-Only's favourite artists, with tracks from @apsychicyes, @riveryarra, Material Things (@12th-isle), @priori-ties, @nicholaswilson1982 & @steviewhisper, @benoitb, @maxabysmal, @58daniel, @bogdan-drazic, @whyesss, @twitch, @warzouk, @thomasbakk, @eyemeasure, @rdjm0, @furiousfrank, Moonphase (AKA @cl_lit), @moonbowmusic and @aki-aki.
