As the first rays of the morning sun break through the emerald leaves, peaceful beings come out to warm up in the golden light. Drips of dew glisten on the trees. A magical atmosphere exists throughout the forest...

Domain of the Elves

The final movement of the Grimm Sins Suite is a Passepied that retells the story of Hansel and Gretel. It starts off with just the father melody alone. Then the children Hansel and Gretel enter. And everything is in a major light, but with the introduction of the step-mother's line the music grows minor, and after a pass of the melody, the father theme is devolved into the step-mother's and the minor feel becomes stronger. Then the mother and father themes disappear entirely and the children are left alone, in a minor key and in a slower rhythmic tempo. then the witch begins to entire the scene, slowly. Until she fully comes in as a variation of the step mother's theme and grows even more sinister as it turns to the half-diminished scale.  Gretel is left alone as her brother Hansel is removed from the scene, until she outwits the witch in her gluttony and pushes her into the oven, which is signified by a terrible screaming figure. Then Gretel finds Hansel and they continue to find their way home, finally reuniting with the father bring it back to the original melody figure from the beginning of the piece.

Crossing the River Styx

I spent two years making Punto Ártica album as a whole, and I mostly played my mom’s Spanish guitar in the spare time. This theme and chords got shape with time, without any plan, in some different variations I’ve tried to remember and craft here.

Even a 7/4 vocal section had come up. In the spirit of this new profile, I asked Codi (https://soundcloud.com/noisealter) to adapt my translation of a poem I wrote when my age was about 1/3 than now (see below), and he also sung it with the passion and delivery I was looking for !!

FEBRERO  /  FEBRUARY

Efe de frío, Febrero,  /  ‘F’ for Freeze, February,
tiempo de ocio y ventura  /  leisure and venture time.
Sueño, guitarra, lectura,  /  Sleep, guitar, reading,
paso intermedio.  /  intermediate step.

Tiempo de amigos y risas  /  Time for friends and laughter,
de descanso e ilusión  /  of rest and illusion
de esperanza y ocasión,  /  of hope and opportunity,
muere la prisa.  /  the rush dies.

Febrero de nacimiento,  /  February of birth,
pausa para el estudiante.  /  pause for the student.
Los problemas van delante,  /  The problems go ahead,
estoy contento.  /  I’m happy.

++++. PROFILE NOTES ++++

Once a wannabe, not yet a has been.

It had been over a decade since I put together a song,
and for that matter basically walked away from music altogether.
Losing hope that I would ever have the time to put into music again,
I finally gave away my 3rd music studio.
I ran across SoundCloud around 2013,
and thought I might take what few songs I had recorded, 
and lay them to rest there.
And there they languished.

HOWEVER, around 2017 I went back to SoundCloud
and began listening a little more and a little more,
and actively taking a part in visiting the sites
of so many wonderful musicians and beautiful songs.
Also, more and more often I would discover that these artists
were blossoming everywhere around the world,
and most definitely worthy of high praise and compliments.

Then suddenly, these old dead soundtracks right here
began to have a bit of life breathed back into them.
From the kind words that began to come trickling in,
I thought, maybe, someday I might give this music thing a try again.

The thing that finally pushed me into action
was a particular SoundCloud artist…Sander Heerings,
AKA https://soundcloud.com/wane-of-summer
 

Not only was he encouraging,
but he began faithfully responding to a few questions,
then a barrage of them.

The final result seemed to be that after a couple of months,
the Old Grinder now has a 4th studio and, finally, a new song.
I hope there may be many more to come.

Thank you Sander, and to the multitude that have dropped in
to listen to these old songs, 
and most of all, for perking up my spirits.
