Compo In D Minor

This song was an outcome of imagining a state of grace, detachment, and killing of the self. It holds a repetitive bass sound, inspired by traditional Arabic music, otherwise known as tarab (طرب). Tarab has no explicit English translation, however, can be translated to ‘ecstasy’ – a higher state of consciousness. It is the musicians’ job to help themselves and their audience reach this state of tarab. One of tarab’s defining features is the use of a constant bass notes (usually the keynote) to create a depth in the sound and contrast from the fast and high-pitched melodies. It is a form of meditation and resolve in the music, a constant, peaceful resting note. Once one reaches a state of tarab, according to Islam, they become closer to God. This represents Weil’s goal to reach a state of completely detached
consciousness and subconscious, a state of infinite spirituality and morality – a step closer to God.

Grey Seals, Halichoerus Grypus

This piece was inspired by Weil’s constant state of critical reflection and asking herself questions, as well as using attention to indulge in the problems she is trying to cure. This is like a calling and an answer. Asking herself, solving, developing ideologies, and as such, myself developing the music piece in that way. Answers create new questions, questions create new answers, they both use each other to create and develop into a movement. With this influence, I created a piece that somewhat moves itself – the answer is based on the first question, then the next question is based off the first answer, and so forth – slowly moving the piece forward. Create is a music piece detached from its surroundings, feeding off itself, furthermore, feeding only off the last musical phrase. It is a piece that lives in the present, slowly escaping the void and forgiving its debts.
