Agartha, the debut full-length album by Japanese producer Wata Igarashi, is a mysterious, divine thing. Named for the mythical secret kingdom, understood as a complex maze of underground tunnels, perhaps designed by Martians who colonised the Earth tens of thousands of years ago, it’s a similarly mystical, perhaps even cosmic trip – but this time, exploring an inner, deeply personal cosmos. Beautifully detailed and bustling with rich incident, it takes Igarashi’s music to new places, which still retaining his unique sonic imprimatur; in this respect, it’s perfectly at home with Kompakt, a label that’s always encouraged artists to make the visionary music they need to create, to take risks and make sideways steps into uncharted territory.

An eloquent producer and DJ, Igarashi has been releasing techno for eleven years now, appearing on such imprints as The Bunker NY, Delsin, Midgar, and Time To Express; he has also self-released his productions via his WIP net label. Throughout, Igarashi has consistently explored his unique approach to techno and electronic music, one that’s eloquent and poised, even when it shifts into more psychedelic terrain; he’s a master at balancing the sensual and the functional, and he has an unerring ear for the right texture, the right tone, at the right time. He brings all of this into Agartha, his most thorough-going expression of self to date.

For Agartha, Igarashi had a strong concept he wanted to explore. Visualising specific scenes from an imaginary film based on the titular secret kingdom, he created soundtracks for those scenes, spending time during the pandemic in his studio, working away carefully at the ten tracks here. Given his background in creating music for television and advertisements, Igarashi is well-placed to explore the marriage of the sonic and the visual in such intimate ways, but freed from commercial concerns, he let his imagination run riot. He also drew on a rich palette of musical influences – techno is in there, of course, but you can also hear the smoky, improvised jazz of the likes of Miles Davis (to whom the album’s title is an indirect nod), and the minimalism and systems music of Steve Reich.

The latter is particularly pronounced on the gorgeous, beatless drift of “Floating Against Time”, where an arpeggiated sequence lingers, lovingly, around your ears for nine blissful minutes, coasting across swooning drones and waves of ambient noise. “Ceremony Of The Dead”, originally composed as part of a Sony 360 Reality Audio spatial sound concert, is a deep pass into systems composition, with various patterns overlaid and interlocking, before a wordless vocal rises from the depths, a gorgeous counterpoint to the swarming textures that gather across the track. On the other hand, tracks like “Burning” and “Subterranean Life” nudge toward Fourth World territory, painting deluxe dreamscapes of uncertain provenance; the title cut is an abstract drift-world, Igarashi painting an alien tableau dotted by shape-shifting creatures.

Agartha’s conceptual framework means that everything on the album sits perfectly together; listening to it in one sitting is a dizzying, lush experience. Its imaginings of inner landscapes recall, in some respects, the nautical, aqueous mythologies of the Drexciyan universe, though from different perspectives. But the result is Igarashi’s own creation, a deluxe, enchanting trip through the visionary Agartha of this unique producer’s cinematic mind’s-eye.

Wata Igarashi - Floating Against Time

2018’s chilled-out Kiran LP was a first step towards Konduku’s inevitable fate as electronic music producer par excellence. The Dutch performer’s right brain rhythms were perhaps aptly timed, touching a spot made tender by the period of introspection forced upon us by an unprecedented global pandemic. These were spartan experiments in sound that reverberated within the cavernous space isolation prised open but didn’t stay that way for long. With the return to normality came another side to Konduku’s work, productions and real-time sets that focused on a heavier, more techno-leaning sound; though they still took inspiration from bass, sometimes house, and the plangent loops of mid-2000s Italian hypnotica. These beats found a perfect home on Spazio Disponibile, Delsin’s Mantis as well as DJ Nobu’s Bitta label, and even claimed a sublabel all his own on Rotterdam’s Nous'klaer Audio, the music and photography outlet K Series. A highly satisfying alliance of liquid basslines and layered echoes put his name on the rise, and today his relentlessly chugging and nimble beats are very much a known quantity, a unique and welcome proponent for cerebral, subaqueous loops. Bassiani Podcast 223 is top-form Konduku recorded live at the club back in May, three hours of forward-thinking techno that’s thick with ideas and rattling rhythms, far-out frequencies for the temporal lobe that surprise at every turn.

Helmut Geier’s career in music is just about as long as they come, starting out a DJ freshman back in 1978 and witnessing numerous of the most notable revolutions in sound and politics to have changed the world since. So many of electronic’s foremost names, like cult Berlin record dispensary Hard Wax, or Tresor and E-Werk where he held residencies, or even Limelight in New York, all bear his mark to some degree or other. Then there’s his releases, collaborations and remixes, and forays into the world of fashion, numerous enough they’d take a while to tally. His formula for longevity has been a chameleon-like ability to stay tapped into the zeitgeist and guide its course, International Deejay Gigolo Records has been a permanent conduit for the mission, his early championing of the electroclash genre and work with talents like Ms. Kittin, Laurent Garnier and Vitalic another notable moment in the last half century. One thing’s for certain: DJ Hell’s not planning on going anywhere; his work’s at times anthemic, at times high camp, but constantly pulling from a lifetime of references both past and new and creating something new from the embers. Bassiani Podcast 240 is a very special live recording from Hell’s set at Bassiani’s Time Passages night back on September 27th, a three hour instalment heavy with 80s synthwork, vocoder frequencies and pounding bass. Yet another watermark from a cultural legend.

A few months after our successful Saüle debut, here we go again for a second round of genre-busting, boundary-pushing sonic exploration. Embracing the Idea of techno as a means of transcending our condition, both as conscious and subconscious beings, this series offers a platform for artists to express themselves with enhanced scope and purpose. For this second installment which will take place on 5 June, RYC invites a trio of musicians who’ve been pushing the envelope of techno and electronics to a broader extent. A name synonymous with bold dynamics and cutting-edge approach, London-based producer Jin Synth will take us on a mind-bending ride down her intricate rhythmic algebra and layers of hypnotic, otherworldly sonics. A jack-of-all-trades whose hybrid, unhindered vision for music has driven to all ends of the techno spectrum, the one and only DJ Pete will join us for a hectic parade of breaks-laden, bass-heavy weapons and dubbed-out tangents. Chief explorer of lushly textured folds and immersive cinematic arcs, dub techno maestro Magna Pia will take over the decks for one of those moments on the dance floor when functional innovation fuses with multi-sensory exaltation.

Surrounded by dense forest landscapes and a family with a keen interest in music, Evigt Mörker started making music in 1996. After dabbling in rock and punk bands it was electronic music that changed his perception of music forever. Always searching for sounds with enigmatic and hypnotic qualities an encounter with the thriving Swedish techno scene in the late 90s laid ground for his musical compositions to come. In 2013 he started his eponymous label on which he has released three highly sought after EP’s, and has worked closely with labels such as Northern Electronics and Semantica. His music has been described as having a strong connection with the tradition of Swedish melancholy but never without the sense of salvation lurking in the shadows.

One last mix to end the year. When Svreca sent me this set, he could not have known what it would mean to me. I have spent so much time looking back lately, reliving old discussions and re-imagining moments passed, often lamenting how much was lost along the way. In just under three hours this mix communicates the flow of years. An archived recording from a special memory, it reminds me that the passage of time is beautiful even in what it fades away. Listening to it, I become lost completely, as though I am everywhere at once.

The cohesive array of depth charged devices that Anthony Linell has produced is formidable. From his opening statements as Abdulla Rashim on his early label of the same name, right through to his recent work that puts his aliases aside, there is a robust and rigorous intent that compounds the elemental strategies of techno's models to apprehend his singular vision.

Presiding over Stockholm's Northern Electronics label with Varg (Jonas Rönnberg), Linell dispenses with mechanisms of attention on all fronts. Marked by an indefatigable self-reliance, the label presents exactly what it means to display, and no more. Carving an idiosyncratic platform for his music is as great of a warning as there could be that Linell's leveraging little toward the benefit of the audience. By his measure, the familiarity and comfort of contemporary techno is stripped back to its rushing heart, the senses left tailgating the strobe in a fit of intuition over decision. The greater this is exposed the colder it gets, and its in these extremes that Linell's caustic rhythmic precision hits. Live, it comes off as a galvanizing strike from the outside; analysing the room as a DJ, it's a case of being pursued through the dark.

Just as the brevity of Linell's output in the eyes of techno is exalted as it is brought into focus, the background to this blurs as you start to decipher his other projects. Lundin Oil skirts the fringes of noise and experimental music, and in collaboration with Varg as Ulwhednar, this is perhaps even more pronounced.

Purposively ricocheting between the techno world and experimental electronic music, Linell forges a distinct passage that gathers the aesthetically uncompromising motifs and missions from across this spectrum. It's this combination and resolve that's brought Linell to the world's attention, however little that attention has been solicited.
