Despite the devastating earthquake in February that stripped the Christchurch Vegetarian Society of its wonderful Vegetarian Centre and all of its resources, the group immediately reached out to support and assist the local vegetarian and vegan community. Coordinator Yolanda Soryl talks of the aftermath, their response and how people can support the rebuild of their group.

Supporting the vegetarian community after the Christchurch earthquake

The Government is accused of dodging the issue of battery hens by throwing taxpayer money at an initiative to shift the chickens into a new "unspeakably cruel" farming system. Listen to Green MP Sue Kedgley question Agriculture Minister David Carter in Parliament on Wednesday (17 August). She produced documents showing MAF spent $400,000 on the new colony cage system. Ms Kedgley is demanding answers from Agriculture Minister David Carter. Mr Carter says work is ongoing on a code of welfare for hens - but a shift to a completely free-range system would drive up egg-production costs dramatically.

Agriculture Minister challenged over taxpayer funds on cruel cage system

Radio New Zealand's CheckPoint reports on a press conference organised by SAFE and the RNZSPCA, where Green Party MP Sue Kedgley pledge on behalf of her party to end caged farming systems, including colony cages. The conference was to launch an united approach to oppose colony cage systems proposed in the draft Code of Welfare for Layer Hens. SAFE says they are nothing more than redesigned battery cages.
