nce its formation in 2001, Novalima has been breaking down boundaries, uniting seemingly irreconcilable genres, communities and generations to create an inspiring movement that has revolutionized the music scene in their native Peru. Founded by four friends from Lima with a shared passion for both traditional Afro-Peruvian music and modern DJ culture, Novalima searches for the common ground between past and future, between tradition and innovation. 

Throughout 2014 Novalima has been recording what will be their new album, Planetario to be released in June 16 on Wonderwheel Recordings. The name of the album reflects its worldwide feel as it has been recorded in various locations around the globe including collaborations by top local and international musicians. A few of these recording sessions were done in Colombia which has given some of the new tracks an Afro-Colombian vibe and takes their exploration of deep Afro rhythms into the future. Collaborations include Sidestepper vocalist Eka Muñoz, as well as members from La-33, Pernett and La Mamba Negra, plus other worldwide artists such as Marc de Clive Lowe (UK/NZ), Panko from Ojos de Brujo, Kumar (Cuban rapper based in BCN). Remixes from the album are already underway with Bomba Stereo, Quantic and Nickodemus already lined up.

The debut single from the album, “Como Yo” (to be released May 19th on digital single and 7” vinyl) pays homage to a fallen bandmember and troubadour named Mangue, telling his story moving from town to town and venue to venue playing music, remembering and keeping something from each place he visited. Upon his passing, his only wish would be that there would be no tears and that all his friends and family would enjoy life as he did while he was on this planet…living it to the fullest. The deep, heartfelt lyrics honoring their friend are underscored by an appropriately celebratory musical vibe with rolling percussion, twinkling synths, and a sing-song chant chorus reflecting the spirit of the song.: “Gozen La Vida Como Yo” -  Enjoy life, like me (Like I do)

Novalima has garnered critical acclaim from mainstream and underground media alike, a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album, and a featured spot in cult filmmaker Robert Rodriguez’s hit Mexploitation movie Machete. While their sound is futuristic and cutting-edge, the roots of Novalima’s music stretch back hundreds of years to the times of slavery and Spanish colonial rule. In a far-too familiar tale, African slaves were brought to Peru as early as the 1500s until the middle of the 19th Century, establishing an outpost of African culture in South America. Over the years, the soul and rhythms of Africa blended with the melodies and instruments of Europe and the Andes. The result is rich musical repertoire that has existed for generations on the periphery of Peruvian popular culture.

Led by drummer / multi-instrumentalist Max Weissenfeldt (The Whitefield Brothers, The Poets of Rhythm, The Polyversal Souls) and Peruvian guitarist Alex Mendoza, this new studio ensemble takes it’s cues from Max’s experience under several different band variations that have explored Late-60’s Funk & Soul, West African Rhythms, Ethiopian Grooves and now, for the first time on record, Afro-Peruvian Cumbia. Alex Mendoza’s quintessentially Peruvian style psychedelic guitar licks lay a sabor never heard before onto Max's typically raw and funky percussion style. It’s another notch in an increasingly diversified portfolio for Max.
