SuperGlu - Diving Bell

Latvian is AA side of SuperGlu's Diving Bell 7". It will be released on all digital platforms on 22 June 2015.

The song was written by singer Ben Brown (singer) for his girlfriend Krista (bassist) following a row on the phone last year. He embarked upon a hazardous 120 mile journey from his home in Manningtree to her flat in Brighton on a 40 year old Honda C70 moped, without a map or directions, planning to say sorry in person. Inevitably, he got lost. The trip took nine hours and he eventually arrived in Brighton at 3am.

Unable to wake Krista by phone and stranded in the street, he strapped his acoustic guitar to his back, climbed the scaffolding outside her building to her fourth floor flat and serenaded her through the window with this song.

This heart-warming/sick-making romantic gesture was picked up by the national news. On a slow news day in June, it clogged newsfeeds, provoked a Heart FM phone-in (posing the question, “What would you do for love?”) and left the celebrity couple fending off unwanted attention from Women’s Weekly.

After a run of blistering shows at SXSW, ending with a sell-out show for BBC Music and the Department for International Trade,  SuperGlu launch their new single on antigen records. Festival dates will follow, including a third consecutive appearance at Latitude.

Simmer Down is an early taste of new EP Fig. It has already picked up airplay from Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq, Tom Robinson and John Kennedy and it made Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist on 14 April 2017, where it jostled for attention with Snoop Dogg and Kendrick Lamar.

SuperGlu - Simmer Down

Bury St. Edmunds-based power trio Gaffa Tape Sandy recently signed to antigen records (home of SuperGlu), giving the label a monopoly on adhesive-themed bands from Suffolk. 

They are: Catherine Lindley-Neilson (voice and bass), Kim Jarvis (voice and guitar) and Robin Francis (drums). The three friends formed the band in 2015 with the simple aim to do something “loud and exciting”. They are influenced by the White Stripes, Pixies, Violent Femmes, Pulled Apart By Horses, Slaves and (Thee) Oh Sees.

All three members of Gaffa Tape Sandy are very nice, polite young people from a picturesque market town in rural East Anglia and, as such, are a publicist’s nightmare. Pushed for lurid gossip, their manager was able to confirm that Robin worked in a Christian tea shop, Kim is often called “Tim” by people who mishear his name, and Catherine once had a job in a tile shop, where she became an expert in grout. 

Fortunately, Gaffa Tape Sandy is a band without the need for a back-story filled with controversy or comedy misadventures to get people’s attention. Their self-released debut single “Smart-Dressed Guy” and follow-up EP “Spring Killing” have already received airplay on the Huw Stephens show and were championed by Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson. Live, they have supported Idles (twice), the Buzzcocks, SuperGlu, Get Inuit and the Stupids. 

They were chosen by BBC Introducing to perform at this year’s Glastonbury, where they closed their set with a blistering version of new single “Beehive”, which will be available to download or stream on all reputable digital platforms from 20 October.

Dead Rat Orchestra present a soundtrack to the film Tyburnia: A Radical History Of 600 Years Of Public Execution by James Holcombe.

This album is the product of meticulous research into the history of the Tyburn gallows and features rediscovered broadside ballads, written by and for those condemned to dance the Tyburn Jig, intercut with psychogeographical field recordings, musique concrète and lost songs in the Thieves' Cant. Dead Rat Orchestra have collaborated with director James Holcombe and award-winning folk artist Lisa Knapp, to create their most political album to date; an indictment of oppression, greed and the criminalisation of dissent, as relevant now as when the words were first penned, more than 300 years ago.

The CD is mounted in a 32-page, A5 perfect-bound booklet, containing lyrics and stills from the film.

NB. antigen records was originally created as a joke, to document and preserve the musical heritage of the  East Anglian region of the United Kingdom. The plan was to digitise and reissue a handful of cassette releases by some of the obscure noise-rock bands kicking around in the late 80s and early 90s - including such household names as Bum Gravy, WhiteSlug and Earth Mother Fucker. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what went wrong.
